SCIENCE DEPARTMENT Mr. Witten prepares a culture dish. Chemistry students produce hydrogen. Science courses are stressed throughout the students’ secondary school career. Our Eighth graders study a course in general science, while our Freshmen take a more detailed look at general science accompanied by laboratory work. Sophomores are required to have Biology which includes a great deal of experimentation. In Chemistry, the students learn how chemicals combine to give us the world in which we live. Physics is concerned with the study of our physical world and the operation of machines. Various phenomena such as light, heat, sound, and electricity are explored. Physics class explores the spring constant. Susan Hamlin demonstrates the telegraph. 20

MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENT Mr. Miller explains addition of Trig, functions. Mrs. Doris Jones shows relation of area and perimeter. 4 Kathy Cheely practices Algebra I homework. Six mathematics courses are offered this year at the Academy, two of which are required for gradua- tion. Math Eight is a course in “Basic Modern Mathe- matics” which provides the necessary mastery of basic number skills as well as logical reasoning. Algebra I is required for Freshmen. In this course, a simple Algebra is introduced which paves the way for a more detailed study in Algebra II. Juniors may take Geometry which deals with theorems, proofs, and reasoning. Seniors are offered an advanced math of Trigonometry and Algebra. The main objective of the Mathematics Department is to teach students to THINK in an analytical manner. FOREIGN LANGUAGE DEPARTMENT FRENCH LATIN SPANISH Mr. Witten points out French sentence structure. Our Foreign Language Department is comprised of three languages of two years each. These languages, French, Latin, and Spanish, greatly enrich our curriculum. In the first year classes, the students learn the fundamentals of grammar and basic vocabulary. Second year students take a more detailed look at the particular language under study. Latin II classes delve into the campaigns of Julius Caesar. Spanish classes emphasize the art of speaking. Conversations are held in Spanish in order to improve pronunciation and diction. Student gets Mrs. Butler’s undivided attention in Latin Class. Miss Wilson conjugates “tocar” for Spanish students. 21
