ENGLISH DEPARTMENT Mr. Holland Lectures before English class. Mrs. 1 linn prepares to face Senior English. The purpose of the English Department is to stimulate students to attain mastery of language skills. In order to accomplish this, emphasis is placed on the importance of understanding the fundamentals of grammar and func- tional mechanics as well as techniques of composition. The need for vocabulary enrichment is also stressed. Creative writing is encouraged and research is required. Finally, the world of literature is explored so that students may learn to become discriminating readers by gaining a knowledge of the criteria by which literature is judged. Mrs. Levesque puts up poster to encourage reading in her English classes. 18
