He came to us from Prince Edward County where he was Superintendent of the Public Schools for a number of years. Mr. Harper is, however, originally from Frederick County near Winchester, Virginia. Mr. and Mrs. Harper, who make their home in Lawrenceville, have two married daughters, and a son in college. They are also the proud grandparents of two boys and two girls. Mr. Harper feels that, we have been very fortunate this year in having been able to fill vacancies in the teaching staff. He would like to extend a most cordial welcome to our new teachers and to thank those teachers who have returned to retirement after helping us open school in September. The following is a direct quote from our new Administrator. “Although we are still crowded somewhat for space everyone, students, teachers, and patrons have been very cooperative and helpful. With this type of cooperation, I feel that we have had a most successful school year. I am particularly impressed with the fine attitude exhibited by the students, which also carries over to the teachers. d believe this school has much to offer, and I hope and trust that each student will take advantage of the opportunities offered him. I know that the school and all concerned with it are most appreciative of the contributions made by the students. I wish to extend to the annual staff and its sponsors my sincere thanks and appreciation for the work and effort they have put into this fine annual.” 5 PARENT TEACHER ORGANIZATION Ready to serve. Through the sponsorship of numerous fund raising activities, the P.T.O. succeeded in paying for a number of the school buses. This year’s activities included: the October Fair, an auction sale, Brunswick stews, and bi-monthly collection of old newspapers. The major function of the P.T.O. , however, is to promote a further uniting of the faculty and patrons of Brunswick Academy. Brunswick Stew-always a winner! L. to R.— R. B. The purpose of the English Department is to stimulate students to attain mastery of language skills. In order to accomplish this, emphasis is placed on the importance of understanding the fundamentals of grammar and func- tional mechanics as well as techniques of composition. The need for vocabulary enrichment is also stressed. Creative writing is encouraged and research is required. Finally, the world of literature is explored so that students may learn to become discriminating readers by gaining a knowledge of the criteria by which literature is judged. Mrs. Levesque puts up poster to encourage reading in her English classes. 18 MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENT Mr. Miller explains addition of Trig, functions. Mrs. Doris Jones shows relation of area and perimeter. 4 Kathy Cheely practices Algebra I homework. Six mathematics courses are offered this year at the Academy, two of which are required for gradua- tion. Math Eight is a course in “Basic Modern Mathe- matics” which provides the necessary mastery of basic number skills as well as logical reasoning. Algebra I is required for Freshmen. In this course, a simple Algebra is introduced which paves the way for a more detailed study in Algebra II. Juniors may take Geometry which deals with theorems, proofs, and reasoning. Seniors are offered an advanced math of Trigonometry and Algebra. The main objective of the Mathematics Department is to teach students to THINK in an analytical manner. Who’s not paying attention? 19 SCIENCE DEPARTMENT Mr. Witten prepares a culture dish. Chemistry students produce hydrogen. Science courses are stressed throughout the students’ secondary school career. Our Eighth graders study a course in general science, while our Freshmen take a more detailed look at general science accompanied by laboratory work. Sophomores are required to have Biology which includes a great deal of experimentation. In Chemistry, the students learn how chemicals combine to give us the world in which we live. Physics is concerned with the study of our physical world and the operation of machines. Various phenomena such as light, heat, sound, and electricity are explored. Physics class explores the spring constant. Susan Hamlin demonstrates the telegraph. 20 FOREIGN LANGUAGE DEPARTMENT FRENCH LATIN SPANISH Mr. Witten points out French sentence structure. Our Foreign Language Department is comprised of three languages of two years each. These languages, French, Latin, and Spanish, greatly enrich our curriculum. In the first year classes, the students learn the fundamentals of grammar and basic vocabulary. Second year students take a more detailed look at the particular language under study. Latin II classes delve into the campaigns of Julius Caesar. Spanish classes emphasize the art of speaking. Conversations are held in Spanish in order to improve pronunciation and diction. Student gets Mrs. Butler’s undivided attention in Latin Class. Miss Wilson conjugates “tocar” for Spanish students. 21 SOCIAL STUDIES DEPARTMENT Mr. Conrad checks Jeff Parrott’s work. Mr. Wills prepares for class. Our Social Studies program offers something of interest for every grade level. Eighth graders begin with American History which tells the story of Colonial times as well as our modern space age. World Geography and World History, offered to ninth and tenth graders, deal with the geography, governments, leaders, and beliefs of nations. A required course in American History is provided for Juniors. This is a more detailed study of our country’s past. Seniors concentrate on American Government; a class which combines the study of the formation of our system of government with current developments in politics. As an elective. Sociology benefits many students. A U.S. map in the making. Mr. High reviews for a test. 22 COMMERCIAL DEPARTMENT Mrs. Raiford explains debits and credits. Dictation can be fun! MARTIN Aide 126 127 Please answer only for your own name! i| The sixth and seventh graders were introduced this year to changing classes and a variety of teachers which should help them make a smooth transition to the Upper School. To teach an understanding of principles and the j way to apply them to problem solving, is Mrs. j Glidewell’s primary aim. Her secondary aim is to | increase the student’s ability to think scientifically. Mr. Langford teaches English in its natural sequence, which is first observing and listening, and then speaking. Mrs. Nash places emphasis on logical reasoning, patterns, structure, and mathematical skills. . Mr. Kerrigan, in teaching reading, emphasizes vo- cabulary expansion and reading for comprehension. Mr. Wiley examines Virginia’s past with his seventh grade social studies class, and with the sixth grade, ; explores the history of the Old World. SIXTH AND Another assignment, Mr. Kerrigan? The end of 128 Good morning, class. a hard day. SEVENTH GRADES Biology in the sixth grade? 129 FIFTH GRADE Mrs. Steed records grades in her little black book. Displaying geometric designs. Since their first year of school, our boys and girls have had many learning experiences in language arts, social studies, health, science, mathematics, and in other areas of the curriculum. In the Fifth Grade, we still emphasize these areas while meeting the in- dividual needs of each student and presenting challenges to them to stimulate their desire to learn and accomplish. Reading is one medium of learning of which we make special use. Our aim is to make the student aware of the satisfaction and enjoyment which can be found in books! Blackboard drill. Mrs. Chandler hands out pictures to happy fifth graders. 130 FOURTH GRADE Mrs. Mitchell makes an assignment. Our goal is to achieve high academic standing, impeccable character, pleasing personality, and outstanding citizenship. Emphasis is placed on the fundamentals of reading, math- ematics, and language. Fourth graders must learn to listen carefully and think and work independently. “O Christmas tree, O Christmas tree . . .” i Let it snow! 131 THIRD GRADE Mrs. Reed ponders lesson plans. “I’rosty” beams on happy scene. The third grader is in an expansive phase of development. His work is geared to meet the needs and interests of the inquisitive mind. Attitudes are developed and organized through their personal ex- periences. Third graders enjoy drama, creative art, puppetry, and field trips. These activities satisfy their need for action and at the same time, extend their knowledge and awareness of their communities. They learn to master reading, writing, arithmetic, science, and health. Their school life is full of study- ing, making friends, playing, and doing all the things which help them to become happy, healthy, and competent boys and girls. Budding artists. 132 SECOND GRADE In addition to the three R’s, our aim is to stress the importance of safety at all times; also, to help second graders realize the meaning of listening atten- tively, following directions, and accepting responsi- bilities. We try to train our pupils to have pleasing manners and to be polite at all times. We use every opportu- nity to strengthen character and use stories of good deeds to build integrity. The importance of the community in our daily lives is brought out through the use of books, guest speakers, and field trips. Although there is a great deal for the second grader to learn, and much of his time must be spent with books, we do not overlook the importance of active play and outdoor exercise. Our aim is to build strong minds and bodies. Mrs. Temple shows how to find sums. Miss Willis hangs Christmas stockings. 133 Mrs. Hazelwood and her smiling helpers trim the tree. In an effort to meet the needs of first graders, we accentuate the importance of listening and following directions. Our two most important aims are; to provide a strong phonics program that will lay a good foundation for independent reading, and to give a thorough understanding of the simple concept of numbers. Through our social studies, we learn to work and play well together. We also learn to love and appreciate our homes, communities, state, and country. Mrs. Land invites pupils and visitors into first grade room. Mrs. Crichton and part of her Reading circle. 134 Learning to count is hard work! KINDERGARTEN Our Kindergarten is a busy one. We work, and play, and have lots of fun. We learn our numbers and ABC’s, And how to say, “thank you,” and “please.” We listen to stories and also sing. But most of all, the important thing Is to learn to follow The Golden Rule In all our life at home or school. If we can do this every day. Our lives wUl be successful In every way. Our enrollment has increased enormously making additional staff and facilities necessary. New activities and organizations were added to provide a more rounded social life. All these developments put great pressures on the yearbook staff. Ideas carefully developed during the summer had to be scrapped and new ones formulated. The size of the yearbook had to be enlarged and the enormous task of selling ads lay before us. Large numbers of pictures of many school activities had to be taken. With the untiring efforts of staff members and other concerned persons, we have completed our task. We hope that the 1970 Viking will be enjoyed by all. The editorial staff would like to take this opportunity to extend our heartfelt thanks to those who have helped to make this yearbook possible — the staff for long hours of hard work, often without reward or recognition; the sponsors for advice in production and management; the advertisers for their tinancial backing; and all other persons who worked to make this yearbook possible. Special appreciation is extended to Mr. T. E. Blick, Jr. of the Brunswick Times-Gazette tor his help in layout planning and photography. Mr. Blick gave freely of his valuable time and advice, although he is not connected with the school.
