Burnell Hawthorne James Vaughan A Year in Focus 1968 This year, the Beta Club assumed responsibility for sponsoring the 1968 VIKING. Many long hours of hard work have been spent by the Beta members, other willing, dedicated students, and the sponsors in the process of compiling this yearbook of memories. In the early days of summer, the VIKING Staff visited various surrounding towns and communities with the pur¬ pose of selling advertising space in our annual. Some days ended with full receipt books, however, other days ended with only headaches and tired feet. We are grateful, thougli, to our advertisers who helped to make the dream of a successful yearbook become a reality. Selling ads was a relatively simple task compared with what lay ahead. We little realized that we had merely laid the groundwork from which the rest of the structure was to be built. After school opened, pictures had to be made, subscriptions sold, layouts drawn, and copy written in order to begin the assemblage of a yearbook which we hoped would give the best editorial and pictorial account of past events. To record a year of events as diversified as those that take place at the Academy is a monumental task. However, it is with a deep feeling of pride that we present the VIKING for 1968. To the Students of Brunswick Academy: For your contribution in making this 1967-68 school year an outstanding one, I extend to you my heartfelt thanks. May your recollections of the accomplishments made to the academy and within the student body this year bring fond memories to you in years to come. Football equipment was purchased and students were allowed to participate in football for the first time in the history of the school. Through the efforts of a group of athletically-inclined patrons, the athletic field was graded and seeded, and a field house was constructed on the premises. You have displayed qualities of loyalty, initiative, honesty, integrity and cooperation. These intangible qualities have contributed to the development of a better school spirit and more pride in our school. Emphasis is constantly placed on developing courses of study in our curriculum so that you may receive the best possible education. The faculty at Brunswick Academy is truly dedicated to helping you, the student. You will, when summarizing the twelve formative years of your life, appreciate the wisdom and understanding of the staff at the academy, who have engineered the construction of a foundation for your future. 1 assure you that this has been a most pleasant year for me. My association with members of the faculty and the student body has been most gratifying. I feel that we have had a successful year together, and that in years to come we can recall the year 1967-68 with pride. I express my deep appreciation to Mrs. Raiford, Mr. Blick, and the annual staff, who have spent countless hours in the preparation of this yearbook — a symbol of devotion and dedication. Congratulations to the class of 1968, and best wishes to the students who will return next fall. I wish for each of you the very best that life has to offer. C. M. SAUNDERS, JR. The activities began with a bonfire and pep rally on Friday night. On Saturday afternoon, a large crowd gathered for the game with Albemarle. Ronnie Cheely led the pre-game ceremonies with a welcome to alumni and friends. Rev. Henry Matthews delivered the invoca¬ tion, and Sandra House sang the National Anthem. During the colorful half-time, the Hon. Joseph C. Hutcheson crowned lovely Dianne Daniel as Home¬ coming Queen and Dianne Jones as Maid-of-Honor. The homecoming festivities were climaxed with a dance on Saturday evening given by the S.C.O. Our first homecoming proved a great success and will be fondly remembered by alumni and students. The elegant atmosphere, created by the Junior Class, was enhanced by a black, velvet-like stage backdrop with the Queen’s title written in gold. Serving as Master of Ceremonies was James Vaughan, President of the Junior Class. As he introduced each candidate, she entered the as¬ sembly room on the arm of her escort, stepped into the spotlight, and smiled at her audience. The newspaper consists of eight pages, crammed with pictures and stories of students, club activities, and sporting events. A dedicated staff works franti¬ cally each six weeks to assemble this publication. What motivates a newspaper staff? No one can really know until he becomes a member of one. Each school ’day finds Vikings’ Voice reporters working quietly at the job of producing a read¬ able school newspaper. Time is precious to these staff members who pursue many other school activities. Rewards for serving on the newspaper staff are few, but the feeling of personal achievement is great. SEATED, E. to R., ART EDITORS, Alice Moore, Sarah Nash.
