Brown, USN In the quiet hours steaming independently through the night, in the action-filled periods cutting white wakes in the sea hunting a submarine, no matter what the time or place, the ultimate responsibility for the readiness and welfare of the BRUMBY and her crew rests on but one man, the captain. Commander Peter G. Brown, USN holds that burden aboard the USS BRUMBY. To him fall the endless hours on the bridge seeing the ship through the Straits of Denmark, his is the duty of greeting foreign guests as a representative of the United States. The in- creasingly complex world situation has served to in-9 crease the responsibility incumbent upon he who would command a ship at sea. In the sense that his hand upon the helm guided us throughout the cruise, this must be Commander Brown's story as well. A '

FA Q, 4, N, ,-5 .O ZMIQQQQXQ From amidst the bustle of the shipyard, the pressureof constant drills, and the long hours preparing for inspections, a crew and a ship emerged. This is the story of that ship. USS BRUMBY QDE 10445, her officers and crew, on her first deployment. Throughout the cruise, the attitude was that of anticipation and pride. Many months of preparation were at last showing their fruit in professional performance in an area of the oceans where adaptability is a virtue practiced by all. As ambassadors of good Will, BRUMBY sailors carried America to thousands, from the fjords of Norway to the village squares of Sicily. They accom- plished this with good grace and rare humor, carrying them- selves proudly. This is their story.
