FA Q, 4, N, ,-5 .O ZMIQQQQXQ From amidst the bustle of the shipyard, the pressureof constant drills, and the long hours preparing for inspections, a crew and a ship emerged. This is the story of that ship. USS BRUMBY QDE 10445, her officers and crew, on her first deployment. Throughout the cruise, the attitude was that of anticipation and pride. Many months of preparation were at last showing their fruit in professional performance in an area of the oceans where adaptability is a virtue practiced by all. As ambassadors of good Will, BRUMBY sailors carried America to thousands, from the fjords of Norway to the village squares of Sicily. They accom- plished this with good grace and rare humor, carrying them- selves proudly. This is their story. THE CAPTAEN Commander Peter G. Brown, USN In the quiet hours steaming independently through the night, in the action-filled periods cutting white wakes in the sea hunting a submarine, no matter what the time or place, the ultimate responsibility for the readiness and welfare of the BRUMBY and her crew rests on but one man, the captain. Commander Peter G. Brown, USN holds that burden aboard the USS BRUMBY. To him fall the endless hours on the bridge seeing the ship through the Straits of Denmark, his is the duty of greeting foreign guests as a representative of the United States. The in- creasingly complex world situation has served to in-9 crease the responsibility incumbent upon he who would command a ship at sea. In the sense that his hand upon the helm guided us throughout the cruise, this must be Commander Brown's story as well. Sprenkle THE JGURNEY From Newport, in company with the USS ESSEX and other units of Escort Squadron EIGHT, we headed northeast across the North Atlantic until four thousand miles later we tied up beneath Akershus Forteress at Gslo, Norway. Thus be- gan the cruise that would subsequently take us through the Straits of Denmark to the festive seaport of Kiel, Germany, then north through the Baltic to Norrkoping, Sweden. Heading south, we retraced our track, weaving our way through the heavy stream of traffic in the Skattegat to emerge unscathed just north of England. From there, it was an easy run to Pentland Firth and the open seas west of the British Isles. Fol- lowing several days of operations in a typical North Atlantic sea, we turned south toward the sunny slopes of Spain. It was mid-July when we left El Ferrol for Gibraltar and the Med- iterranean, entering that historic sea one morning so hazy no one was able to view the proverbial rock. The BRUMBY slipped into Naples, Italy and began an intensive inport period during the last week of July and the first days of August We left the teeming harbor of Naples for the blissfully uncrowded sea, transiting the ' Strait of Messina to operate in the central Mediterranean. Our next stop was the for- tified Qby the Crusadersy harbor of Valletta, Malta. Our final stop before beginning the long trek west was the quiet Sicilian village of Castellammare del Golfo, truly a mem- orable port of call. At last we left the Med- iterranean westward bound, with each suc- ceeding sunset seeing us that much closer to families and friends, until early on a foggy morning in late September we sighted Brenton Reef Light, crossed beneath the stretching towers of the new bridge and tied up alongside pier one in soggy but beautiful Newport. FIRST STGP GSLQ i Fresh and clean. Trams clanging merrily. Everywhere a strange language. Stone cas- tles and ancient cottages with grass roofs overgrown with flowers. These were some of the sights and sounds of Oslo, our first foreign port. In what may well be the world's cleanest harbor, we found a warm welcome as smiling Norsemen showed us their city and such treasures as the Vigeland Sculp- tures, the polar ship Fram, the Kon-Tiki raft and the splendid Town Hall. Many of us took the opportunity to visit the Folk Museum, a rambling collection of Norwegian dwellings and folklore dating back to the lusty days of the Vikings. No matter what the object of your sightseeing, Osloloffered interest, color, and history. U Y 'Q X X E ,MX ik! . The quaint streets of Kiel. That excellent German beer. Head- long activity. Into one brief week at Kiel we packed enough activity, both socially and athletically, to last the cruise. As theonly United States ship in port during the height of fes- tivities during the international assembling of naval units for the Kiel regatta, we managed to be everywhere at once. , 41 f. German hosts. Not the least of our activ- ities was the guiding of the many visitors who walked the length of Admiral Tirpitz Mole to see the USS BRUMBY. On one un- forgetable Sunday afternoon three thou- sand came to climb resolutely about the topside route. Un such occasions, every- one had an opportunity to prove himself an ambassador. x 5 9 3 V 5 1 r ! 1 I S U r Q. For six successive days we hotly disputed last place, and happily, lost. In the shadowof the big yawls, the cutter sailors were lost lout the lack of notori- eity did not take anything away from the fierce sailing at the marks or the de- termined competition at thefstarting line. More than the small plague, our - reward was the memory of the singing Brazilians, the joyous Norwegians, and' the competent French all racing inf, -.7,' Q company and good fellowship. -' A -f W -,mf qmv xe-r Of all our recollections of the cruise, surely we must agree that the hospitality of the peo: ple of Kiel ranks very high. We were wel- comed into their homes, their clubs, their so ciety and enjoyed every busy moment. With wonderfully hot food and legendary beer so easily available, it was impossible to go hungry for long. We left Kiel tired but happy, leaving many new friends behind. RRKGPING SWEDEN Far inland along a park-like channel sits the city of Norrkoping, Sweden, a small manufac- turing and seaport complex. We unleashed the BRUMBY basketball team and saw them gob- ble up another opponent, toured the fascinat- ing establishment of the Reijmyre Glass Works and made side excursions to the big city, Stockholm. After Norrkoping storm warnings held special interest for all hands as we sought to safeguard our precious store of fine Swed- ish crystal. Highlight of our brief stay was the party given by the local contingent of the Royal Swedish Air Force. ---i was-ibuu? passes in fmm' nmkhulmfs superb madern Town Hai! uf ben ufifui lmlm .,,,7,,,, .I - V WW Qgfhe-1 EL FE ROL DEL CLAUDILLO, SPAI .Q ws 49' . CASTE LLAMARE DE L GCJLFO, SICILY Final stop during our Mediterranean stay was the quiet fishing village of Castellarn- are del Golfo, Sicily. Straight from the pages of the travel posters, it occupies the beach and mountainside along a rocky shore complete with colorful fishing boats drawn up on the beach. The biggest event of our visit was the concert given in the square by the BRUMBY ESCORTS when it was proven that even a Sicilian can find happiness in dancing to Country and West- ern. This port was our interlude of inac- tivity, a breathing space before the last at sea period and the voyage home. 'av CONCLUSIGN F From those first foggy days in the North Atlantic to the long hot hours under the Mediterranean sun the USS BRUMBY proved herself to be a truly professional antisubmarine hunter. Under all sorts of weather conditions from fair to foul her sonar prob- ed the depths, she moved with that consummate grace only a de- stroyer knows, and she did it all well. For those of us who sailed her through strange waters to far shores, the ups and downs of fate and fortune only served to make her more a fighting lady while, daily, we became more sure of ourselves and each other. CQMCORTRQN EIGHT CDRR.E. NICHOLSON, USN The commodore lives on the bridge and in the combat center of his flagship, overseeing, judging, deciding, for in his hands lies the responsibility for the readiness and welfare of the squadron. Throughout the deployment, Commander Nicholson and his staff . were part of the BRUMBY family. i LT John MacNamarra LT Robert Bennett LTJ G Wesley Patience RMI R.F. Rumford i SMl W.S.
