M fW f FOOTBALL SQUAD The Bruce H1 Wildcats have had a somewhat up and down season this year, with a squad of 50 raw recruits Coach Cox began practice in September The first two weeks were used largely on fundamentals, the next two weeks were spent in trying to find the right position for the right man By this time the team had come up to its first game, 'Eupora, and what a game! Eupora was slated to win at least 30 points, but the boys gave a good account of themselves Hhen the smoke cleared away, we found the score Eupora 7, Bruce 6 The next week was spent correcting mistakes made at Eupora and preparing for Pheba On this Friday that we played Pheba the weather man wasn't so good to us for the rain came down in torrents, next week was spent making ready for Vardaman, our oldest rival Thursday oefore we played Vardaman on Friday the Wildcats were dealt a stunning blow The Navy called one of our best players, Fred Long The line had been built around Fred and Uncle Sam hit us where it hurt when he called Fred We played the Vardaman game in somewhat of a stupor, a fumbled punt, and a lucky pass by the Vardaman lads cost us this game 6 to O We had to reshuffle our entire team and start building all over again John Fooshee, who was called on to take up where Fred Long left eff, really came through and finished the season playing s good brand of center Next we hit Senatobia We journeyed all the way to Senatobia to play under the bright lights they must have been too bright or either to much 'Ch1naman maybe both Senatobia won 7 to O and the way back home seemed a thousand miles At this particllar place the schedule blew up, and we found ourselves wlthoatan opponent, UNO one to play us Some of the games we had scheduled lr the summon the teams backed out when time came to play So we started back over the circuit again He loaded in Mr Murphree's bus one Friday morning and journeyed over in the 'Suburbs of Houston to play Pheba again This time they were some better, and the score ended 27 to 19 in favor of the Bruce Wildcats Then superintendent Cook and Coach Cox began to comb the country for a fame After a week frantic telephoning, writing, and sending word, e landed a game and what a game! lhls Sturvls team was composed of Veterans from and they must have thourht they were still ln the war Nhen the score was 12 to O in favor of the G I's During the folfowing e r with Sturgis, Foreivn Nara, Dame ended the lf you wanted phoning or calling ln person at the Davis llnic, wh ch is located ln Brace we were all cocked and primed to play Pontotoc Tust before we were to leave Bruce, the Pontotoc Coach called to inform us that the local field was covered in water 6 inches deep, and to wait and come londay This we did and to our sorrow Ve arrived at Pontotoc Monday afternoon, our m-nds not on football, thinking about the past week end and before we knew it the game was Non 15 to O The next game, which was staged at our house in ovr yard, ended victory or 5enatob'a 7 to O Her 'Chinanan was a regular nSpeed Along came the final game, a traditional to be played with Vardaman on lhanks- in a second Majnet W downs To their surprlse, Vardaman players did not enter our territory Bruce scored once only to have it called back on a penalty When the final whistle sounded, the score was O to O Thus ended a very -ood season From the standpo nt of wins and losses in the score column, we did not stack up so high, but that doesn't tell the whole story 'Vhen we see how our boys have 1:51 ieveloped and notice the brand of football they were playin? at the end of the faify, ff 4' f' 1.4 ffiffff, f 4' ff ff ffQ,f,f f' 1' aa, 2' f ' was to see one of our boys or talk to him, you could reach him by tele-Eggighljgmg W6 -were mn over Pont ot cn 35355gEgigigigigigigigigigiif2ff2E1s2s2if5f52 ,ivlng Day Vardaman fans rated tue lr team above the Jlldcats by about 3 touch- ,,',.,.,., season, it makes us proud of our team They are due a lot of credit for the showfigggggfiig ing they have made Ne have a group of football players that are ready at all times to do whatever they are called upon to do--no matter whether 1 's football or scholastic work--they give their best We challenre any schoo to show us a better group of boys than we have at Bruce High Too much credit cannot be given Coach Cox for his splendid work with us. Of course, we would not forget the fine work of the boys who carried on football during the war under the leadership of Superintendent Cook.
