The 1976 Brownwood High School football team upheld one of the greatest traditions of BHS - the tradition of winning. Opening the season with a 14-13 loss to Abilene Cooper, the Lions were not to be discouraged , for the next game Brownwood bounced back with an impressive 23-0 romp over Austin Travis and the beginning of a long, hard-fought-for winning streak. The Lions finished their non-district games by running over Waco Midway 33-'7 . The Lions charged into district play as they shut-out Burkburnett 'I-0 , and Weatherford 42-0 . The next week the Lions traveled to Mineral Wells where they gave the Rams a taste of 4-AAA football by beating them 42-14. Next the Lions played host to Iowa Park, and when the party was over Brownwood cleaned up on a 51-8 victory over the Hawks. After shutting out Vernon 25-0 and Graham 35-0 , and with a shocking Stephenville loss to Weatherford , the Lions were crowned King of District 4-AAA . The next week brought the last district game and a 35-'7 victory over Stephenville for the Lions. It also brought a ticket to the playoffs. As the Bi-district game approached, the spirit and enthusiasm of the students, as well as the football team , grew. On Friday night November 19 , in San Angelo, the Lions came through with a 14-'7 victory over Lakeview and an invitation to the Regional play-offs. However, the wind, the cold , and the Perryton Rangers were too much for the Lions, and Perryton walked off with a 13-0 victory. Capturing places on the All Area team are Jimmy Patterson. The name Gordon Wood is synonymous with the winning tradition. football team. There are many great traditions at Brownwood High School , but one of the greatest is the winning tradition of the football team. Though they do not always win by the scoreboard , the Lions are always victorious in the field of sportsmanship. The three main factors which contribute to the success of the football team are the excellent coaching staff headed by Gordon Wood, the togethemess of the football team, and the many hard practices that the team goes through. There are many things that a football player experiences in the years that he plays football. He learns to work with others to produce a desired result, he learns to accept the agony of defeat, and he learns how to handle the thrill of victory. Doug l-lun.
