The International Thespian Society hosts West Texas Thespian Convention. The Band, Drama Department and Choir collaborate on Spaghetti Supper Club Activities Add Spice to Daily Routines The Art Club proved again to be an important and effective part of BHS. One of the highlights of the school year was the art show, sponsored by the ART Club. Members of the Art Club also aided the Junior and Senior classes by making posters for the class plays. The Art Club greatly aided Thespians by helping make decorations and signs for the West Texas Thes- pian convention that was held at BHS this year. The Brownwood chapter of the International Thespian Society had a busy time this year. Not only did they produce their usual three plays and musical, but they also hosted the West Texas Thespian Convention at Brownwood this year. Mr. Alex Reeve was the head ad- visor for the convention's planning. Miss Kathleen Dab- ney, a young actress, participated in the convention. Miss Dabney read poetry of her own composition and she and Mr. Reeve read scenes from She Stoops to Conquer. Another of the activities in which Thespians entered was the one-act play contest. Brownwood won first at zone with Donna Low winning best actress, Greg Hass named on All-Star Cast, and Susan McMath given and Honorable Mention. In district competition, Brownwood again took first. Donna Low and John . Henley were named on All-Star Cast. At region, in the new North Texas State theatre, Brownwood placed second with Donna Low winning best actress, Ray West winning best supporting actor, and Celia King was named to All-Star Cast. E 51. : page Art Show Winners pose with works. In district competition for the Forensic meet, which took place in Weatherford, Donna Low placed second in prose reading, Susan McMath placed second in po- etry interpretation, John Henley placed second in poetry interpretation, and Karen McBee placed third in extem- poraneous speaking. The members of Future Homemakers of America were involved in many worthwhile projects this year. One of the proiects was the collection of cancelled postage stamps to be sent to Norway to aid the fight against tuberculosis. Another of FHA's proiects was the collec- tion of discarded eyeglasses. The Brownwood Chapter of FHA also contributed to the Area IV meeting at Tarleton State College. Turning in their usual fine performance at every foot- ball game, the band provided an added incentive for student participation at the games. Aided by the drill team, the BHS band combined music and precision to produce and outstanding half-time show. The Band also entered UIL competition and Roy Hawkins won a seat on the All-State Band. The BHS Stage Band was truly exceptional this year. Under the direction of Dave Lewis, the BHS Stage Band won the showmanship award at Brownwood's annual Stage Band Festival. Mike Lewis won the class 3-AAA All Star Band Trumpet position. One of the main attrac- tions at the festival was the Hawaiian stage band which featured dancers performing Hawaiian and Polynesian dances. The band and stage band made many trips this year to compete in various contests. The final and most dis- tant trip was to Enid, Oklahoma. This concluded a fine year for the BHS band. Ki 74 x 5 ' k Qs f , ics Q 7 Lions Seek Unprecedented Third Consecutive AAA Crown What new horizons are left after a ball club has won back-to-back state champi- onships in Class AAA football? Such was the predicament of the 1971 edition of the Brownwood Lions. SECOND ROW: Wilson, Pinto, Cut- Hudson, Mlina, Torrez, Sheffield, Morgan, Cutbirth, Fol- The two opening games of the district sched- ule probably provided the two roughest games on the Lion's schedule. Both Hirschi and Iowa Park teamed potent offenses and capable de- fenses to produce excellent football teams and managed to give the Lions a battle for the loop crown. Hirschi, a two touchdown under- dog, engaged the Lions and proved to be one of the most improved teams in the league be- fore bowing out 7-6 in a defensive squeaker. Iowa Park, too, managed to ruffle the Lions a few times in the District 4-AAA game of the year. Trailing 7-0 at halftime, the Lions came back in the second half to exhibit the poise necessary to be true champions, as they de- feated the Hawks I5-7. The Lions rolled to the last district game with ease, but Burkburnett was supposed to seri- ously threaten Lion domination of the district again. However, the ever-improving Lions breezed to a crushing 41-7 verdict, and a fifth consecutive district crown. som, Southall. FOURTH ROW: Thompson, Scaff, Riggins, Smith, Hitt, Knight, Smith. However, with the first two games past and the Mighty Maroon glancing back at two losses to Class AAAA powerhouses, Abilene Cooper and Abilene High, the faithful dwindled to a hearty few. Not only was the 21-23 loss to Abilene High embarassing be- fore a large home crowd, but it was also captured in the lenses of SPORTS ILLUSTRATED photographer Lane Stewart. Following the Abilene High game, came the sound defeat of South Grand Prairie, the last non-confer- ence game, to the tune of 33-O, and it was evident that the Lions had found some of the ielling com- pound needed to begin the long road to state. right: Speedy Ray Thompson gains ground against Abilene High. below: Brian Pinto talks about his game problems to Coach Wood. Take District Crown Roundballers Have Best Season in Five Years. With several starters still wearing the dirt, pads and sweat of the gridiron wars, the 1971-1972 basketball season began for the Lions. Beginning workouts in early December, Coach Don Martin's charges had the poten- tial to have an excellent season. Lion roundballers, still sharing their coach with the football team, won opening games against Brady and Lake View and placed second in the Seymour Tourna- ment. During the Christmas holidays, for the first time with a full crew, the Lions had several workouts and faced rugged competition in the Howard Payne Tourna- ment. The Lions represented BHS well before bowing out to awesome AAAA Midland Lee. The end of the Christmas vacation brought the advent of the district struggle with several iniuries plaguing the Lion squad. The Lions battled tough competition in early district games and faced a show-down for the district lead against Burkburnett in a home game. Despite an off-night, the Lions managed to stave off the Bulldogs and went on to finish the first half of the district season undefeated, gaining at least a play-off spot. 1 'UYICJ 9W-,Ek N--1-4 3 R ff' E above: Mike Brifian clears the boards as Tim Reid looks on. Leading at the end of the first half, the Lions went cold in the third quarter and the tall Snyder team began to pull away. Fighting back, in the final quar- ter the Lions managed to pull within twelve, 57-69, but couldn't catch the Tigers. Golf, Track, Tennis Spring Sports Bring More District Crowns The opening of the second se- mester brought preparations in ear- nest for the spring sports season. Golf opened the spring schedule with the San Angelo Tourney on January u28, 29. Randy McHorse was runner-up in the med- alist race. By this time the Lion cin- dermen had taken to the field and run to second place finish at the Brady Relays. Brady was also the site of a tourney for the golfers on March li, and though finishing only one stroke out of first place, the Lions placed fourth behind three AAAA teams. Randy Mc- Horse again paced the Lions by placing second in the medalist race. The following weekend brought a spring sports weekend to Brownwood with meets hosted by all Lion teams. Graham hosted the second round of the three meet district golf schedule and Brownwood managed to pick up nine more strokes on the field with Hirschi moving into second and Stephen- ville holding down third. Weatherford hosted the third and final round at the Benbrook Golf Course and Coach Larry Preas's Lions had to hold on for all their worth to emerge a one stroke victor over Hirschi and a third district crown for BHS. McHorse finally won a med- alist race and he and the rest of the Lion golfers were off for Regional at Denton. Weatherford was also the host the following day for the district track and tennis meets.
