BROWN AND GOLD PICNIC The pep that was inspired during the initiation continued to assert itself and a picnic to the Country Club resaca was planned. Each girl took a lunchg and the means of transportation consisted of a team and wagon from Mr. Tucker's Ice plant. Many of the girls were attired in riding habits or hiking breeches and some enjoyed a cool dip in the resaca. The lunches were spread out on a large cloth, and every one helped herself. The picnic was chaperoned by Mrs. Dickens and Mrs. Tucker who had many games for us to play and enjoy. WORK MEETING Members of the Senior class met at the home of Eva Yzaguirre on Wednesday, preceding Halloween, to clean pumpkins for Jack-OaLanters, and construct ghosts. After all the pumpkins were cut and ghosts Iixed-some one discovered two boy.s on the back porch eating tamales. The noise of rasping corn shucks was no longer a duet but a chorus, and the source of noise was soon demolished. The meeting broke up as the next day was not a holiday. PREPARATIONS FOR CARNIVAL CONTINUED The work meeting was held this time at Annie Tucker's house and all the available paper of the crinkly black kind was- transformed into some forms of spools. A burlap sack of confetti was divided up into nickel packages to be sold at different booths. After each had done enough work to earn a nights lodging, Mrs. Tucker served hot chocolate and angel food cake, her specialty. t SLIME INITIATION INTO THE BROWN AND GOLD The annual initiation of the Freshman Girls, was held in the High School Gym- nasium. The Brown and Gold officials announced that all would be expected to come masqueraded, and some Freshmen thought it another ambush to fool them. However, the majority of the club came representing every character from The Old Woman who lived in a shoe to what was, apparently meant to be a man. The time was set for seven thirty o'c1ock and all were on time with the exception of the girls, for at exactly seven twenty-tive the windows of the gym were packed with boys. It seemed as though they anticipated fun and excitement-and they were right for once. The Fish had to traverse the straight and narrow path to Pandemonium only to receive a shock at the end of the journey, that brought them back to earth in a tub of cold water. Tl1ey next experienced the rare treat of being drunk on a swing-then the upper classmen had to laugh and disclose their identity, when the Freshmen tried to walk the plank. This ended a most unusual initiation. The Brown and Gold club, which now consists of Freshman and Upperclass-girls, enjoyed milk chocolates, which were served at the Olympia. The party was chaperoned by the High School Teachers. They enjoyed the show as though they were really of us. DINNER PARTY FOR STAFF The Palmetto Staff was entertained with a very delightful dinner at the home of Mrs. and Mrs. S. C. Tucker in West Brownsville. The Annual Staff, the Ways and Means Committee, the Sponsor. Mrs. Dickens, and the Superintendent of Schools, Mr. Yoe, were the guests. The color scheme of Brown and Gold was carried out to the minutest detail, and miniature telephones, with the respective numbers attached, served the purpose of place cards. MENU Grape-Fruit Cocktail Fried Chicken Mashed Potatoes Pea Timbles Macaroni and Cheese Olives Celery Stuffed Dates Fruit Salad Hot Rolls Brown and Gold Brick Ice Cream, Angle food cake and coffee After the dinner a business meeting was held to settle problems which arise in the publication of an annual. 64

LL. 1,4 ess:-Ax' 'i K , HALLOWEEN CARNIVAL The Halowcen Carnival, staged by the students of the High School for the benefit of the Palmetto, was proclaimed a howling success by all. Old, Middle aged and young enjoyed the many Halloween accessoriesg such as confetti, balloons, ser- pentines, sandwiches, hot dogs , pies, soda pop, candy, fortune telling, little sells: and all the little things that help to make a night of merry making worth while. The Freshmen had many attractions: at one you learned your fate, at another they cheered you up with jokes and at another sold you a hot dog to keep up your spirits throughout the evening. The Sophomores had one large booth that represented a dance hallg and a couple could enjoy three dances for a dime in this spooky den. The Juniors would pop corn, ice cream and sandwiches at one oddly decorated booth, confetti, serpentine, balloons and noises of all kinds at another. The Seniors staged a costume review and a prize was given to the most appropriate costume. Mr. Rasco and Mr. Smith contributed an attraction in the way of a play. They pulled off many jokes which helped to lighten the hearts of the weary, and the boys quartette rendered two numbers. SENIOR PROM The annual Senior Prom was given at the Golf and Country Club on November 18th. Bids were sold to students of the High School and some outsiders, because the purpose of the dance was to raise funds to help start the annual budget. The Corpus Christi football boys were guests of the Senior class and we enjoyed the dance to- gether-even though Brownsville had not been victorious in the afternoon. Music was furnished by Mrs. Celaya and orchestra. This is one reason why the evening was such an enjoyable one-their music is unsurpassed. Chicken salad, sandwiches, and coffee were served by the steward in such a delightful manner that the football squad forgot their diet. Among those to enjoy the dancing were the Corpus crowd, students of the High School including the entire Senior class and chaperones,- Mrs. Dickens, Mr. and Mrs. Yoe, Mrs. Tucker. Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Mr. and Mrs. E. K. Goodrich. Mr. and Mrs. Russell. JUNIOR HOP The Junior Class entertained the Mercedes football team with a dance at the Elks Club on Thanksgiving. Bids were sold to students desiring to go, and the annual reaped the benefit of the sales. The hall was artistically decorated in the School Colors, Brown and Gold. Music was furnished by the Queen Orchestra. ' Very wholesome fruit punch was served thru out the evening. The guests were not limited to the Mercedes team, and many boys and girls from towns up the valley enjoyed the dance immensely.
