Class Colors Class Motto Class Flower Mint Green and White Forward ever; Backward never. White Rose 5 FOREWORD The moving finger writes and having writ—moves on. These words of Omar Khayyam seem fitting while we Seniors take a backward look. Father Time was there with his hour glass when we green sopho- mores were following the arrows to our various classrooms. He was present as we made new friends in our senior high and collected our assignments from our teachers. Two years to go was an eternity! The sand in the bottom of the hour glass was higher—we were juniors. We still struggled through those inevitable assignments; but we were above the sophomore rating. Now, we were spectators of some dis- tinction at the various sport events; a more established part of the audience at the plays and the music events, and more prestige at the dances and other social events. Had we but looked, the sand was higher when we became members of that esteemed group known as Seniors. The days passed quickly— assignments, name cards, tests, senior party, semester exams, ban- quet, honor ratings, class night—and it was Graduation Day. Father Time must be chuckling as we passed this important milestone in our lives—a milestone that we thought three years ago was an eternity. Donald Conn, who has been the supervising principal of the Brownsville high schools since July 1951, is well known to all. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Pittsburgh; and also attended the Uni- r T t versity of Florida, Johns Hopkins University, 0 University of West Virginia, and Massachu- setts Institute of Technology. In his spare time Mr. Conn enjoys skiing, horseback riding, reading, and walking. MR. CARL HOUGH Assistant Principal Mr. Hough has accepted the position as assistant principal this year. He teaches ma- chine and metal shop and officiates at the annex. He is captain in the Air Force Reserve in Adjutant, Flight G , 9551 Specialize Training Squadron. AAR. WADE WHITLATCH—Pr ncipa To The Graduates of 1956 As you complete another milestone and face the future, responsibilities should be apparent. It will be your responsibility to apply to your living the skills, ideas, and ideals learned in school. It will be your responsibility to show the world that educaton has improved your behavior, cooperation, and respect for authority. It will be your responsibility to show that you have grown spiritually and morally. As you go forward, the faculty and administration know that you will be aware of these responsibilities and act in such a manner that you will reflect honor on yourself, your school, and your community. 12 Early in the morning and again in the afternoon, our principal passes through this door and begins his work. f One of Mr. Whitlatch's jobs is to read the daily announcements over the public address system. 13 MRS. ALTA MAE BARRICKLOW Secretary Although Mrs. Barricklow is continually working with Mr. Whitlatch and the faculty, she never refuses to help any Brownie with a problem. April 6 was a happy day, for it is her first wedding anniversary. Music, dancing, cooking, and baking are her outside interests. MR. JOSEPH HALL Attendance Director Mr. Hall, our attendance director, is improving our school attendance consid- erably. So, after being absent, you bet- ter have a doctor's excuse because you won't hear There will be no detention tonight very often. 14 MRS. GOMERY School Nurse A person often seen around B. H. S. is Mrs. Gomery, our school nurse. She was a graduate of the Union- town Hospital and did her post-graduate work at Providence, Rhode Island. Keeping us in good health is her aim. THE FACULTY The faculty of the Brownsville Senior High School consists of thirty- two teachers. They are always trying to help us to better ourselves and clear a path so we can easily follow. Most of the teachers have dedicated their services to B.H.S. for many years and in all probability will continue to do so. This year we have welcomed five new teachers to B.H.S. They are: Mr. Roy, band director and chorus instructor; Mr. Gregg, economics; Mr. Greco, senior science; Mr. Majernik, biology; and Mr. Muchoney, English. We wish these new teachers the best of luck and many prosperous years with the students. The debate team consisting of Harry McConnell, Eric Hicks, J. D. McMillen, and Gearld Bogus won the Fayette County Championship in February of 1955. In March the team won the Southwestern District Champion- ship of California State Teachers College. The team went on to win the National Forensic League Championship in April at St. Vincent College. Later in June the team was sent to San Jose, California by the Board of Education where the team represented Pennsylvania in the National Tournament of State Winners. There were 44 State teams at San Jose. Brownsville reached the Semi-Finals placing 5th in the United States out of 44 State Entries. JOSEPH GLASS This individual served as President for 1956 at which time was exercised a driving leadership and superb ex- ample to his team mates as a debater and student of forensics. Joe served this year as 1st affirmative in a most magnificent fashion. Here is only one word that adequately describes Joe and that is—GREAT. FADELL HALLAL Fadell is the first sophomore ever to be on the first team at Brownsville. He was the only sophomore in the National Forensic League this year serving on a first team. Fadell is a superior debater and shows promise of being the best ever to attend Brownsville High School. With Fadell we see shades of Robert Fast.
