'lhe class conducted an elec- tion here at school the same day that the na- tional election was held. Iiotfs' l'hif.s1't'ul f'i1'1r7t'.ss' Physical lfitness is a required course in every school since the war, Calisthenics is the usual routine, but when nice weather begins. they are permitted to go outdoors for softball or relays. By these various activities. they build strong bodies in preparation for the work that lies directly ahead of them, 'litfping-'fOne of our most popular courses in the high school is typing, where the stu- dents learn to earn. This room is humming with activity nearly every period of the day, as well as at noon, before and after school. H1'slort1W-Cjtirrent events. which will later be written into history books. form a large part of our present history classes, Students get much of their information from newspa- pers and much from news reels on current events shown here in our own movie room. CLASSES Agriculture-Although farming is one of our basic industries, the study of agriculture has only recently been given a place in our high schools. The picture shows one class group on a field trip which is a regular part of their training. Girls' Physical! 1'il'lUCS.S-e-ve-NOK to be outdone by the boys, the girls also take calisthenics. They, too. must have strong bodies to take the places of the boys who are serving their country. Chemislry-Chemistry is especially interf esting to the boys. At times their home- made experiments have a surprise ending. but they get much that will be of help to them in the immediate future. Malhemalics-W Mathematics is another sub- ject brought to the foreground because of the war. Nearly every type of specialized train- ing in the army or navy requires a good back- ground in math, and our students receive ex- cellent training in this line. CLASSES 1.1-I7I'tIFf.1 ---l.ihrary and study hall, the most familiar room to all students, is well super- vised for the heneht ofthe students, although they don't always appreciate such concern for their well-being, 'lhis is a typical scene at the reference table, Home lziconomitis - liuture home-makers End it a pleasure to learn to run a home with the modern conveniences and equipment in our kitchen. 'lihey learn not only how to pres pare a meal, but how to plan balanced menus. how to serve a dinner. and many of the nice- ties of entertaining at dinner parties. Home .YLlI'.SliI?t1 -A course in home nursing and child care was introduced into the home economics department this year, 'l'he picture shows one girl demonstrating artificial respira- tion, which is only one of the many practical firstfaid treatments studied by this group. lfnglish and l.tlIlAl7' AA sound knowledge ol the languages is a mark of culture in any per- son, Four years of lfnglish and two of l,atin are oflered in B.H.S. and a large proportion of our students are enrolled in these courses, -45 .3 f'f O k,, Xlffx IJ CQ' SENIORS IQUGIENIS VVlNKl.l:PI.I2CK-- Xl'ink President Aw, turn uroumlfu Transferred from Ifreetown High School in September '44: I3asketb.1ll 4. Now we are here. worldlyfwise and learned. three steps higher up the ladder of education. XVe are a diligent class and are continually thinking of some new way to make our class still better. XVe sold popcorn. candy. and pop at the ball games: we sponsored a sweater hop and sold personalized stationery, all of which was very profitable. We gave a class play. Sulphur and Molassesf' and held our annual Junior Prom. Both of these major undertakings were successful. This vear we lost several of our students. namely George Barnes. Elsie Cochran, Jean Now- ling. Carol Compton. and .Ioan Holeman. but we at least partially made up for this by gaining Martha Burden and Marliorie Wray'. XVe owe much to our sponsor, Miss Patterson.
