CLASS HISTORY As we look back over the past to the year 1952, we find ourselves beginning our high school career as 8th graders. With an enrollment of 31, we welcomed Mr. C. T. Fitzwater to his first year with B. H. S. 1953 makes us “Green Freshmen” with Mr. Andrew Lindsay as our instructor. We lost Alfred Smiley and Nellie Plogger, leaving us an enrollment of 29. The faculty welcomed Mrs. Nancy O’Connell and Mrs. Mary Woods. We also were fortunate in being able to join many clubs. 1954 zooms us onward to become “Merry Sophomores.” Losing Fred Weeks, Nancy Fix (now Mrs. Jimmy Sensabaugh,) J. W. Little and Joe Smiley, our enrollment decreased to 25, but it was raised again by the transferring of Billy Driver from N. C., and Harold Hotinger from Lexington. Again we welcomed a new member to our faculty, this time, Mr. Walter Anderson. To Lexington’s great gain and our loss, Mr. Lindsay left our faculty this year. In 1955 we entered our ‘‘Jolly Junior’’ year. Again for the third time in our high school days we introduced a new teacher, Mrs. Walter Anderson. We found our enrollment increased by one, Doris Chaplin from Lexington, but sadly decreased by loss of Nancy Plogger (now Mrs. Charles Graves,) Loriene McCurdy (now Mrs. Ralph Steele,) Betty Jean Reid (now Mrs. Babe Swisher,) and Jean Sensabaugh. Harold Hotinger left us to become a ’55 senior. The greatest thrill of our Junior Year was presenting the Junior-Senior Banquet. Selecting “Starlight” as our theme we thrilled to the pleasure of decorating the auditorium in beautiful fashion. We entertained the seniors with speeches, food and dancing. This was a full and happy year, and truly one of the best. 1956 brings us to the happiest year of our high schooldays, recognizing us as “Dignified Seniors.” We are eighteen strong, losing Johnny Harlow, Bobby Toman, Ibry Ramsey, and C. H. Gordon. We enjoyed participating in our Senior Play entitled “Skeleton Walks,” taking our Senior trip to Washington, and finally we are looking forward, most eagerly, to graduation day in June. This year we regretted losing Mr. Dan W. Burger as our principal, but were fortunate to have Mr. John Knick to replace him. Those of us who began and ended our school days together, all twelve years, are: Betty Norcross, Mary M. Wade, Jim Me Crowell, Doris Wade, and Betty Carroll. -- Betty Carroll Doris Wade “THE VALLEY’S FRIENDLIEST STORE LEXINGTON, VIRGINIA ■ .1 SNAPS SENIOR GENERAL MERCHANDISE Kderooie o Store ROCKBRIDGE BATHS, VIRGINIA. SENIOR CLASS CLASS POEM A s we leave our Alma Mater And we go our separate ways Each takes with him brightest memories Of his carefree high school days. We have met the grueling challenge. We have grinned at each defeat; And walked from each a little wiser, The bonds of union more complete. If our ventures take us Northward To the South, the East, or West, We ' ll be guided by the knowledge That we gained at B. H. S. So we depart as full fledged graduates. Wade TYPICAL SENIORS Tommy Snider Ruby Whiteside CLASS PROPHECY “Ruby Whiteside, this is your life.” As these words ring through the Knick auditorium, a small gasp escapes the lips of the little old lady in the third row. The narrator, Tom Snider, continues, “Yes, tonight we bring you the inspiring life of a woman who attended a small country school, financed her way through college by doing odd jobs on the campus, and refused an offer to teach in the largest school in New York City so that she might devote her life to opening the world of reading, ’riting and ’rithmetic to the mountain children of Kentucky. Our thanks to you. Dr. Driver, for bringing Miss Whiteside here tonight on the pretense of attending one of your lectures on atomic energy. But before we begin our story, here is word about “Kisme” lipstick from a girl who knows cosmetics, Doris Chaplin. (Commercial) You were born September 19, 1937, Ruby, the eighth child in a family of nine. From the beginning you are taught economy, and your unselfish character develops. A masculine voice is heard. “Remember when we used to stand in the cold and wait for the bus ?” You were a patrolman on that bus. Ruby. Do you recognize that voice ? Yes, your neighbor from your childhood, here from his business as a successful commercial artist, C. C. McCrowell, known affectionately to us as “Jim.” A feminine voice is heard. “Remember the fun we had cheering together, and the times we cried when The Royals lost the tournament ?” Now manager of a large clothing store, and here from Lexington, Virginia, is your cousin, Shirley Whiteside. In 1956 you graduate from Brownsburg High School and in 1960 from Berea College. You and another young teacher decide to start a school in the hills of Kentucky. Here from Long wood College where she is now Dean of Students is Claudia Whipple, that young teacher who helped begin the two room school back in 1961. Each week the enrollment of the school increases. Within three weeks, fifty students are crowded into the two small rooms. Children eager to learn are still pouring in. Space is desperately needed. Then comes a generous offer. A friend of yours from your school days, now owner of a chain of super markets, offers you $10,000 to start a fund for the erection of a school. Here from his summer resort at Rockbridge Baths is, Mr. Roy Anderson. Also here from his home in Pittsburgh, Pa., another person who helped in the erection of your building by drawing the blueprints without pay, a successful architect, Donald Swope. We’ve travelled back into the past, Ruby, now for a glimpse into the future. Immediately following this program, you will be entertained with a party in your honor at the Royal Hotel. This has been arranged for you by the manager, Mr. B. M. Outturn. There a concert will be presented for you by the Metropolitan soprano, Nellie Cox, and her accompanist, Doris Wade. A reporter from Life magazine, Betty Carroll, will visit your school in Kentucky and the story of your work will be featured in Life magazine. As a personal gift for you, we have a co mplete wardrobe created especially for you by the world famous designer, J. Lee Mohler. Ruby, several of your former classmates send greetings and best wishes for your future. You knew them as Callie Jarvis, Edith Vest and Mary M. Wade, but today they are happily married and living in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley. Ruby Whiteside, this is your life- -a life we were proud to present as a shining example for the youth of our country.” --Betty Norcross JUNIOR $ TOP ACROSS: Hugh Reese, President; Bobby VanDerVeer, Vice-President; Eugene Whitesell, Secretary; Frank Sheets, Treasurer.
