Miss Howell has given a part of herself to us and to this school. Many hours have been spent teaching, helping with Prom, being cheerleading advisor, keeping books for sporting events, and advising FHA girls. Miss Howell, we have respect and admiration for you. May your wishes for tomorrow come true. Thank you so much. As you are turning my pages I realize that this will be my last appearance. I have been in publication since 1953. For thirty one years I have recorded the people, activities, and changes that have taken place at Browns Valley Schools. 1 have not been the first to say farewell. After a little research I found a few interesting facts. The first of my predecessors was published in 1910 as the Inter-Locken. Its builders sold 150 copies for two dollars each. The Inter-Locken was put to rest and in 1912 the Moundbuilder was first published. The Mound- builder recorded the memories through 1952. For forty years it was cherished, labored over, and laughed at fondly in later years. Oh, the memories that the three of us have recorded! Our names may not appear again but all of those who have walked through our pages will not forget us. As I advance to another memory, remember I will hold it in my page. This was the first year that a class has had four honor students. They were Candi Duffield, Pat LeClair, Jeanette Piechowski, and Greg Serocki. Each gave a speech on their past, future, and goals yet to be reached. The speeches followed the class motto which was: Our Lives are before us Our Past is behind us But our memories Are forever with us. Mr. Gordon Zeimer, Chairperson of S.D. School Board, presented five of the students with Dale Scholarships. The recipients were Tom Lubbers, Candi Duffield, Jeanette Piechowski, Patrick LeClair, and Greg Serocki. Some of the highlights were punk and fifties' day and rainbow day. On Friday was dress-up day. At 1:00 we had cornation. Crowned as King and Queen were Ray DeSpiegler and Mary Reinart. After the crowning skits were performed by the classes, organizations, and the teachers. The FHA skit was voted as the best. We had a pepfest. There were many races and cheers led by the cheerleaders. Speeches were given by football players and the coaches. The highlight of the pepfest was the awarding of the spirit trophy won by the seniors and juniors. The royalty float was then driven through town. The football team won the game 15-14 over C-A. The game was followed by a dance at the school. Overall Homecoming 83 was one of THE BEST OF TIMES. What's he doing back there? Wake up, Mary? The banquet was held at Valley Hai. Rev. Larson gave the Invocation and Benediction. Gina Jung sang the theme song Faithfully. Gerice Piechowski read a very interesting senior class prophecy and Jeanette Piechowski read the senior class wills. Michelle Hein read a poem to the seniors. After the banquet a dance was held at the school with music provided by KKFM Music on Wheels. Junior Class President Michelle Hein and her escort Tim Landmark led the grand march. Post rained on prom party was held at Patrick Neal LeClair's. Thanks for the great party Pat. A very enjoyable and memory filled evening was had by all. ite BEST OF TIMES IN SPORTS HARD FOUGHT SEASON The Thunderbird football team enjoyed their fifth consecutive winning season as they posted a respectable 5 win, 3 loss mark. The Valley began the season with a very strong start, winning their first three games by a total of 98-13. Some key injuries in the middle and towards the end of the season took their toll and kept the T-Birds from having the season they had hoped to. For the seventh consecutive year, the Thunderbirds were successful in winning Homecoming. The determined Valley team defeated a very strong Chokio-Alberta unit 15-14 to keep the T-Bird's Homecoming win-streak entact. Several T-Bird players had outstanding seasons. Named to the Pheasant South All-Conference team were Paul Gisi, Terry Reed, and Joe Sykora while Dennis Sykora made Honorable Mention. Coach Keith Haggerty was named Coach of the Year. Defensively, Joe Sykora and and Paul Gisi lead the Valley in tackles with 117- and 115, with Joe adding 8 pass interceptions. Terry Reed and Danny Kaufman finished third and fourth on the tackle charts. Offensively, Paul Gisi lead the Thunderbirds in rushing with 676 yards in 126 carries and was second in receptions with 8 catches for 101 yards. Terry Reed was second in rushing with 557 yards in 111 carries while Todd Pistorius was the leading T-Bird reciever with 12 catches for 208 yards, 4 going for touchdowns. Pat LeClair lead the Valley in passing 25 comp, in 84 attempts for 381 yds. and 6 TDS. The Thunderbirds will be losing seven outstanding seniors but still feel confident they will come back next year with yet another great team! ANOTHER SEASON GONE BY The Thunderbirds' 1983-84 Volleyball team had a fairly good season this year, showing quite an improvement over last year's play. Despite many ups and downs, the team was able to compile an overall record of 5 wins and 9 losses. Best of Times for the Volleyball team included bringing home the first place trophy from the Graceville Invitational Tournament. The Valley team showed the best of their talent as they went up against the other teams in the tourney, which included; Graceville, Villard, and Chokio-Alberta. In District Tournaments, the girls ran into some tough competition against the Elbow-Lake-Wendell Eagles. They were defeated 2-0, to end the 1983-84 season for the T-Birds. This year the Valley will lose 6 seniors upon graduation; Andy Burg, Natalie Kaus, Jann Metz, Joan Sykora, Melanie Watkins, and Mary Reinart. But there are many underclassmen coming up to take their places in the years to come. B-SQUAD FRONT: Gerice Piechowski; Kristi Kuschel, Brenda Bartz, Lori LeClair, Sylvanna Flute. Back: Asst. Without size, the T-Birds used their quickness to press and out-hustle opponents. These two factors, plus utilizing a variety of defenses allowed the T-Birds to be in contention in all but 3 of their 19 games. Though the team would compile only a 9 and 10 season. Valley would be outscored by less than 1 point per game, averaging 59.3 pts. per game and giving up 60.1. Highlights for the year were a 1 pt. 71-70 win over Wilmot, S.D., a 91-73 win over Herman on parents night, and a 65-59 win over Barret in overtime in sub district play. The T-Birds were once again harboring the conferences leading scorer as he averaged over 24 points per game, making him very instrumental in the teams 9 victories and close defeats. Terry was also honored as an all- conference selection. Though Terry would score points, it was a team effort that was put out throughout the game that kept Valley in contention during each contest. This hard working team, perhaps the hardest working team in recent years, should be commended for the 'never say die' attitude. It was this attitude that gave Valley 9 wins and kept the score close in seven other contests. Through graduation, 3 seniors will be lost for next year, but 5 potential returning letterman, plus the addition of Beardsley should make Valley a very competitive team in upcoming years. SEEDED FIFTH IN DISTRICT Team balance was the key to the success of the 1983-84 all junior-senior varsity girls basketball squad. An 11 and 4 overall season record was the result of a veteran team which possessed more balance and depth than teams of recent years past. The girls finished the season with a very respectable 11 and 3 Pheasant Conference record, earning a fourth place finish behind Starbuck, Milan and Hancock The 1983-84 girls took pride in playing a tough defense. As a team they held their opponents to an average of 37.3 points per game while averaging 45.5 points per game offensively. Seeded number 5 in district play the T-Birds faced number 4 Hancock in the quarter final round of tournament competition, and lost. Highlights included a parents' night victory over Herman in which Mary Reinart broke the girls high point game record with 34 points, and the final season game at Milan which ended with a buzzer shot by Shelly Ballhagen giving the T-Birds a 45-44 victory.
