Minnesota South Dakota School Boards Every school district is governed by a school board. The school board is responsible for the care, management and control of school districts. The school board has the functions of planning, policy making, and evaluation. It is the school board that decides the nature and extent of the instructional program, including graduation requirements, extracurricu- lar activities and special education programs. The school board employs personnel, adopts the budget, reviews receipts and expenditures, adopts the school calendar, approves purchases, negotiates master agreements, and many other obligations. The responsibility of a school board to the community is based upon the responsibility of an elected public official to the electorate, but it goes far beyond this basic consideration. No other subdivision of governmnt has such a unique relationship than that which shares with the family the responsibility for the education of the children. To school board members, the yearbook staff extends appreciation for dedicated service. We thank the community for their efforts to maintain our school and to provide an education for the students of Browns Valley Schools. 13 DO YOU REMEMBER — Mrs. Zinter lost her voice and Leora, Jackie and April got to be her pets for a day. — Don and Mary Beth got slapped by Mr. Adolfson in Phy. Sixth Grade Sixth Grade students began the year with a trip to Blue Cloud Abbey. The Monk giving the tour was very informative and entertaining. This was esp. informative for the sixth graders as they are learning about the history of monks and monesteries of the medieval times. Throughout the year students collected material for making Minnesota scrapbooks. In collecting material for the scrapbooks, we’ve found that Browns Valley has an interesting history. Much emphasis is directed toward the Dakota way of life and cultural contributions. 32 Back Row L to R: Tom Piechowski, Matt Lensson, Kai Larson, Mr. Moen, Bruce Bartz; Front Row: Shannon Burg, Nancy Ad- ams, Nicki Warner, and Heide Andrews. SAFETY PATROL During the year athletic tournaments have been held in conjunctions with fifth grade. Football, basketball, and softball were the sports in which the fifth and sixth graders participated. A strong man contest was held in which the winners were: Sean Lehrke, Jeff Pistorius, and Chad Weeks. The school year 1982-83 with Mrs. Lubbers was a very exciting and interesting year. Opening day of school began with lots of smiling faces and jun with a Polaroid camera. Our trip to Blue Cloud Abbey was very exciting and we all learned more about monastery life. Halloween brought many thrills and shrills. Thanks, high school for the fun Spook House! Christmastime kept us busy with making beautiful candleholders out of milkweed pods, and of course, exchanging gifts at our Christmas party. We all learned how to understand and use maps better while studying about our country in Social Studies. The Mystery Powders experiment in Science made us all amateur scientists for two weeks. We are looking forward to next year in the sixth grade, our last year in the elementary. See you, next year Mr. Moen. Back Row L to R: Mark Spindler, Rosalie De Spiegler, Dane Miller, Chad Pistorius, and Marlon Antelope. Fourth Grade We may be a small class of twelve students, but we are mighty! This Fall we went on a field trip to Blue Cloud Abbey, which we really enjoyed. We saw the museum and were impressed to find that the priests built the entire abbey. In Science we have studied and planted secrete plants. We have planted our second crop and will plant more in March. We find it fun to have plants around. Some of us didn’t have good luck, but we kept trying. For Social Studies we cover local and national news daily. In this way we are more aware of the outside world. We listen to the radio, watch TV, and read the paper every day. We really know what President Reagan is doing! In English and Writing we are doing alot of creative writing. You’d be surprised at the stories we can dream up. Some of these stories are serious, but also fun. We have enjoyed our various projects and hope to do more for learning and fun. 34 The Third Grade class of 1982-83 began the year with twenty-two eager and energetic pupils. The children recall that the first memorable event of the year was the stuffed animal contest. Everyone enjoyed having a “friend” with them for the day. The fall field trip to Big Stone Wildlife Refuge was also exciting. The beautiful scenery and wildlife was very interesting. The picnic on the way home was, of course, fun too! Halloween brought a pumpkin carving contest and scary adventures through the spook house. Christmas time was filled with music programs and art contests. The children wanted everything from E.T. dolls to Smurfs and Pac-Man games. The third graders chose “Simon and Simon” as their favorite television show. Detectives and mystery stories are of great interest to these kids. Favorite food chosen by these children was pizza. Yum, Yum! Math won the note for the most popular subject among these young students. Learning the basic multiplication and division facts occupied most of the year. Math races were always exciting! As the year ended these children had grown in many ways, including inces. They are eager to challenge the future and explore the opportunities a head of them. Second Grade The Second Grade class began the year with 23 students, in October Kathrine Butler joined the class to make it 24. The highlight of the year for the students is to learn Cursive Writing. We concentrate on becoming good readers and mastering the basic as adding and subtracting facts in math. 36 The first grade is a nice group of eager, happy children. Much of the year the grade has had 17 students, 8 boys and 9 girls. Two other girls were in the grade briefly and one other girl was in the grade for about one-half of the year. The children made a lot of progress in academics and have enjoyed the fun things we have going on in the room. First Grade Front Row: Melissa Appel. Kin dergarten The 1982-83 Kdgtn. class finds each day unfolding something new. Some of our highlights include a field trip to the “Big Stone Wildlife Refuge”, popping popcorn with NO lid on the popper, carving of pumpkins, making of puppets and learning how to use the parachute in Phy. Ed. The children are making many important changes —not all physical ones. They are feeling proud about work accomplished, refining their social skills, and most importantly, they are growing in self esteem. Volleyball The Thunderbirds 1982-83 varsity volleyball team had its many ups and downs with a record of 1 win and 12 losses. The girls had several close games but didn’t always manage to come out on top. That didn’t discourage the girls, they just kept trying harder. In an Invitational Tournament held in Graceville the T-Birds brought home a 1st place trophy. The four teams competing were Chokio-Alberta, Villard, Graceville and BV. The Valley had some tough competition but they did a fine job of winning. In District Tournaments, the 1982-83 season came to an abrupt ending. The T-Birds were defeated in two games by the Breckenridge Cowgirls. All in all the T-Birds had a fair season. The Valley will lose two Seniors this year, JoAnn Guerts and April Kuschel. April was named All-Conference player. The Thunderbirds were coached by Miss Spaude and Miss Young. Coaches And Seniors 5 Year Player Coach Spaude, JoAnn Geurts, April Kuschel, and Coach Young. Jr. High Football 56 The Valley football team recorded an impressive 6 wins against just 2 losses, which allowed them to capture the Pheasant South Conference Runner-up trophy. The T-Birds 2nd place finish was the highest a Valley football team has finished since 1962, when they tied for the conference championship. Statistically the Thunderbirds dominated both offensively and defensively. They out rushed and out passed their opponents and, for points, out scored their foes 196-91. The offense put up over 24 points a game on an average while the stubborn T-Bird defense limited their competitors to just 11 points an outing. It was one of the youngest Thunderbird squads in the past few years as there were only four seniors on the team. Bob Goodhart, Jair Larson, Scott LeClair and Pete Sykora will all be lost from next year’s team through graduation. Although only four in number, the seniors did an outstanding job of leading the team as each make several big plays throughout the season. Bob Goodhart, Pete Sykora, Paul Gisi and Terry Reed won spots on the All-Conference team, maybe the first time ever that the T-Birds have placed four All-Conference players in the same season. The team also kept Valley’s Homecoming win-streak alive as they made it six strait Homecomings wins by downing Clinton 29-0. The team was also unbeaten at home and leave these two challenges for next years team to keep intact. Next years’ team should be up to meeting both of these challenges as the 1983 football team is expected to be one of the best — if not the best — in Browns Valley High School history. 57 Standing L to R: Mary Rienart, Leora Appel, Nancy Pistorius, April Kuschel, Shelly Ballhagen, Natalie Kaus, JoAnn Geurts, Jann Metz, Karen Peterson, Joan Sykora, Lisa DeSpiegler, Andy Burg.
