Varsity Football The Browns Valley Thunderbirds ended their 1981 season with a 5 win, 4 loss record in the toughest conference in the state. Their record gave them a share of 3rd place, the highest finish a Thunderbird football team has finished since 1966. The 27 man squad will be loosing 12 seniors through graduation, yet feel they can be good conference competition next year with a lot of hard work and a few timely breaks. The girls were troubled with bumping, therefore, preventing them to develop a strong offense of bump, set, spike. However, the T-Birds came on strong defensively. Returning hard driven spikes were T. Zacharias and M. Reinart. At the net attacking the ball and blocking were M. Kaus, J. Heck and J. Metz (who broke her foot during a block). In addition to their exceptional defensive play the dependable and deceiving serves of S. Gisi, A. Kuschel and N. Kaus, enabled the T- Birds to capitalize on their opponent’s poor serve reception. In District tournaments the 1981-82 volleyball season came to an abrupt ending. The T-Birds were defeated by the Clinton Rockets 2- 1. The Valley clinched the first game with an easy 18-12 victory. They dominated the game with finely executed skills. The following games the T-Birds fell victim to poor serve reception and inconsis- tent serving. In the area Girl’s Volleyball is continually increasing with popular- ity. More and more girls are going out and seriously developing correct techniques used in volleyball. B.V. had a total of 30 girls actively participating. Hopefully this trend will continue and fine teams will be developed. 50 Row 1: Pam Serocki, Student Manager; Andy Burg, Sylvana Flute, Brenda Bartz, Lisa DeSpiegler, Jackie Peterson, I ea Labs, Gerice Piechowski, Ms. Young. Football Cheerleaders Girls Basketball Top to Bottom: Lea Labs, Jackie Holland, Gina Jung, Laura Jung Wrestling Pam Serocki, Ann Duffield, Sandy Gisi, Julie Heck 1981-82 Boys’ Basketball 1981-82 brought a new style of ball to Browns Valley as they used ball control to stymie the oppositions more potent offenses. The idea worked nearly to perfection except the guttsy T-Birds had trouble at the free-throw line. The result was several close losses including a 2 pt., 4 overtime loss against C-A, and a 1 pt., overtime loss at Rosholt. The year ended up on a sour note as for over three quaters Valley appeared to have the game against Morris in control. The result however was a pt. loss for in the last 3 minutes of the game, no balls would pass through the basket, and the Valley would once again be foiled in its attempt to win a game. The T-Birds ended up with 8 wins and 12 losses for their efforts. Their win loss record however fails to show that they were one of the best ball handling, well disciplined and perhaps the hardest working defensive outfits the Valley has had in recent years. They proved that although they were weak offensively, tough defense and ball control with few mistakes could enable them to be competitive with teams far superior to them throughout the district. Their hardwork and determination not to be humbled by other teams is to be commended as 1981-82 was indeed and interesting year. They ended the season with an 11-2 win loss record and had a perfect 6-0 record in the conference. The T-Birds graduated 7 outstanding senior wrestlers. They are Duane Birnbaum, Scott Bolstad, Dave Kuschel, Kelly LeClair, Dave Metz, Greg Reinart, and Don Sykora. These seven have a combined total of 348 career wins-by far the greatest total ever accumulated by a single class. Individually, several of these seniors had outstanding seasons and careers. Kelly LeClair was both District and Regional Champion along with placing in State-the third highest ever by a valley wrestler. His 25 win total this season tied him for 2nd most in the schools single season history. Greg Reinart also made the history books by going to state and finishing his career with 99 wins-2nd most in the school’s history. Greg’s remarkable 48 career pin total is also a BV record. Also making the history books were Scott Bolstad and Dave Metz. Scott set a school record with 14 pins in a single and finished his career with 59 wins. Dave ended his career with 80 career wins-3rd best in the school’s history and recorded 38 career pins-2nd best in the school’s history.
