They are meant as a way to remember not only the students and sports, but also the classes. We picked this year to start because this is the first year students have been bused to vocational classes in Wheaton. There are many faults, but we hope it will become a permanent addition to our yearbook. 10 AUTO MECHANICS MODEL OFFICE HEALTH OCCUPATIONS SENIORS Kayleen Bennett Brian Bolstad Lori Dobbs Jody Haugland Jean Heck Lisa Kaufman Paul Kaus Ted King Lois Kleindl Carol Reinart Pat Reineke Dan Sykora Ron Torgerson Jane Weeks Brian Zacharias CLASS OFFICERS Back Row: Vice-Pres. BAND OFFICERS MARCHING BAND Director-Mr. Thomas; Student Director, Paul Kaus; President, David Pistorius; Vice-President, Jean Heck; Secretary-Treasure, Lois Kleindl ATHLETICS FOOTBALL For the few players that played the most popular game in Amer- ica, not enough can be said about the young team. They did what wasn’t expected of them by too many people. They won four games. They also, in a couple of loses, performed to the best of their ability. They gave the few supporters a show of excellence with very few fumbles, intercep- tions, and on occasion, a holding penality. In most cases, they gave a very good offensive show, mov- ing the ball by rushing with occa- sional passes against many veter- an teams. The defence also came to life in the final two games al- lowing less than a hundred total offensive yards. On October 12, 1980, probably the biggest sur- prise to the people was a perfectly played game, The Homecoming Game, which the T-Birds beat a team that the Valley had not beat- en in years. Two weeks later the T-Birds went to Bellingham and spoiled a homecoming as they to- tally dominated a game in which they were 14 point underdogs. Then came a tough game with C-A which C-A had more fans than the Valley and after two costly mis- takes in the first quarter the well supported C-A team came to life and Broke the T-Birds backs. The T-Birds came back though and dominated the last two games for a 500 season. Again, as coach, I must compliment the men on that football team. For many of them did great in football. Bottom row. Kneeling. Coach Adolphson, Coach S. Sagehorn. The 1980-1981 Boys Basketball team faced an uphill climb as it lost six seiors through graduation, and had but one returning starter to build on throughout the year. That returning senior singled handedly kept Val- ley in games as he topped the thirty point mark four times and the twenty point mark 8 times as the T-Birds finished their regular season with 7 wins and 11 losses, 7 and 7 in the Phesand Conference. The season was excit- ing as 3 losses were by two points or less, and most games found the T-Birds close until the final minutes. Highlighting the year was a successful parents night which saw Valley defeat Milan 72-42. Also that night a scoring record was broke as senior Dave McKee hit 36 points to break the old mark of 33. Also, a four overtime game against New Effington kept people on the edge of their seats. Although Valley lost, it still marked a mara- thon game that is seldom seen in the game today. The Team for next year returns 9 players, who with a lot of work in the summer months, could produce a team as exciting as this year. Only time will tell. It was the girls’ bas- ketball season. It was a year when running fast breaks came back into the picture. It was a year of man- to-man de- fense. And also, it was a year when young players, with little or no ex- perience, came in and over. It was a rebuilding year, as there was only one senior, two juniors, and the rest of the team, sophomores and freshmen. Girls’ basketball was a success. As a team that never played together before, they put it together for a 6th ranked position in district. It was a year when many of the play- ers took over and had good games. It was a year which finished 11 and 6 against many senior orient- ed teams. It was a year that should yield a team of the future. They had a winning dual meet season going 10-4. In tournaments they placed 5th at the Cougar Tourna- ment at Morris, third in the Clear Lake Tournament, second in the Pheasant Conference dual meet, second in the Pheasant Confer- ence Tournament, third in the District Tournament and ad- vanced seven wrestlers to the Re- gion Tournament. The team had some excellent individuals and all of them were underclassmen ex- cept for Brian Zacharias who was a senior. Brian ended the season with 27-3 record, led the team in takedowns, won his third Confer- ence Championship, advanced to the Region for the third time, lost 5-3 in true seconds to keep him from going to State and finished up with 91 career wins the highest in BV history. Greg Reinart a Ju- nior led the team in pins with 13 and had a 18-6 record. Dave Metz had a 22-4 record and Kelly Le- Clair had a 19-10-1 record and placed 5th in the Region. Pat Le- Clair was the only District Cham- pion and had a 16-8 record. The secret to the teams success was hard work and dedication. Most of these wrestlers have been wrestling for many years. The team is looking forward to more success in future years.
