Afloat fore’er behore his eyes, It colored for him all his skies: The storm-cloud dark Above his bark. The calm and listless vault of blue Took on his hopeful hue. It tinctured every passing beam- He had his dream. He labored hard and failed at last, His sails too weak to bear the blast, The raging tempests tore away. And sent his beating bark astray. But what cared he For wind or sea! He said. The tempest will be short. My bark will come to port.” He saw through every cloud a gleam- He had his dream. ACTIVITIES Homecoming Royalty 1979-19SO 18 Jr. Queen, Nicole Mortimer Jr. King, Tony Russet Queen, Sue Jung King. Terry Miller 19 Coronation had a nice start both with the weather and the gym. Dave McKee was the Master of Ceremonies for the evening. Enter- tainment was great with all the classes except the booming Sophomore class. A fine job was done by Paul Kaus, Lois Kleindl. and Jason Haugland for the procession. Coach Keith Hag- gerty later crowned Sue Jung as Queen and Terry Miller as King. A snake dance followed with a little pep fest. A fun time was had by all. The T-Birds homecoming day started with a great parade and pep fest. As the day grew old, excitement grew high. Valley fell behind with a quick touchdown, but it didn’t seem to bother their emotions as the boys fought back to take a 24—7 half-time lead. Coaches Haggerty and Engberg brought the T-Birds out for more great football. The Valley starters extended their lead to a 37—13 lead enabling the reserves to play. The T-Birds had a great game with the support of our fans. JUNIOR S 1ST PLACE FI OAT JR. EDITORS Janelle Eroemming. Jody Haugland. EDITOR Randy Madison. CO-EDITOR - Sue Jung. Despite many ups and downs the team was able to compile a record of 6 wins and 7 losses. The girls had several close games in which they showed an admirable display of teamwork and the potential to become future contenders in both conference and district play. Their dedication and hard work paid off in teamwork and victory. Top servers for the team were Kris Grub and Mary Gudgel. The B” squad as a whole, shows great promise as a future A” squad. 60 61 The Valley football team experienced a highly suc- cessful 6-3 record this season. The season began with the defeat of the Graceville Shamrocks, the confer- ence champions. The team had all ingredients of a good football team: 8 Seniors, 16 hard working under- classmen. 2 super coaches and town that supported football. The football team thanks anyone who helped them enjoy this super season and they hope the sup- port of the community stays with the team. The memories and highlights will be remembered for a long time. Coaches and captains, left to right, are: Row I: Von Peterson. Terry Miller. Row 2: Mr. Engberg. Mike Toelle. Mr. Haggerty. Coach Enberg. 62 64 67 The Wrestling squad exper- ienced a highly successful record this year, ending up 9-4 in dual records and capturing the conso- lation trophy in Clear Lake. De- spite the experience of only 3 Sen- iors, and 2 Juniors, the squad de- veloped a stiff-tough to beat atti- tude that did well against formida- ble opponents. Coach Haggerty states that although we were suc- cessful, this year was mainly to build the talent and experience as well as for support, which the team is thankful for. We hope to do as well at tournament time as lach of injuries and plenty of mo- rale make it look highly probable. Bottom Row L - R. $. Burg. J. Goodhart. Row 3 P. LcClair. D. Kuschel. D. Sykora. With eight lettermen re- turning, hopes and goals were set high. The T-Birds led out the season at a furious rate only to fall into a four game losing streak. Highlights of the season were beat- ing neighboring rival Beardsley twice during the season and in the sub-district tourna- ment. The seven Seniors will be greatly missed but hopes will be high as the summer expires to unfold another season. 77 Row I (L R) J. Haanen. J. Volk. T. Lubbers. K. Birnbaum. L. Bosen. T.
