It best reflects our feelings toward life after graduation. Of how we are breaking free to begin the long journey of molding our futures as individuals by choosing life's many paths. We don't know where or what we will end up as, but we do know that during our lifetime we will obtain many memories, whether happy or sad, and many friends just as we have during our last twelve years at Browns Valley Schools. Thanks to Mrs. Nelson who didn't always make us sit on the floor when we tipped over on our chairs. High school was a new experience for us since we were angels in grade school. On our cover we used a compass to symbolize the direction that our education has given us. We don't know what life holds for us but we have the skills and knowledge to deal with any situation. Our theme 11 Come Sail Away was carried out through the annual. Our division pages also carry out the theme with drawings of different sailboats drawn by Linda Sykora. We also opened up our meetings to the underclassmen who were interested in learning more about the structure and how to put together an annual. Now they will have the experience needed in order to put together a fine yearbook. Hey you Huh? Keith Haggerty, Head Football Coach, crowned Teri Schmitt and Mike Volk, Homecoming Queen and King. The royality was complete with Cal Christensen, Karl Wolk, Wanda Kaufman, and Susan Pistorius, Junior King and Queen, and underclassmen attendents. Karl Teri Schmidt Wolk King Mike Queen Teri Wanda Cal Kaufman Christensen Sue Jung Sandy Gist David Metz The kick-off of the football game found the Thunderbirds ready to win their Homecoming game. The game was scoreless and so went into overtime with the mighty Thunderbirds coming out on top, 12-6, at the end of the second overtime. A disco dance was held in the gym for a fantastic ending to an exciting week. FIRST PLACE - FRESHMAN SECOND PLACE - SEVENTH GRADE THIRD PLACE - JUNIORS 1978 FLOATS Homecoming as every year, included the underclassmen constructing floats for competition and the Senior class constructing the Royality Float. They all worked hard but the Freshmen class came out with first place for their float Munch On Milan . Second place went to the Seventh Grade class, which has been said by 'beginners luck' for Devor De Vikes . The Junior Class pulled in third with Miniturize Milan . The Royality Float was done in red, orange, and yellow with stremers, napkins, and bales. With these floats it's easy to see how the parade was such a success. SOPHOMORES EIGHTH GRADE £ Homecoming was one of the biggest weeks Browns Valley High School has ever had. To build up school spirit and enthusiasm the cheerleaders headed a Spirit Week . Monday was Hat's off to the Thunderbirds, and everyone wore hats. Tuesday was one more favored by the students, Grub Day and people wore most anything they wanted, no matter what it looked like or what condition it was in. Thursday was Dress Up Day and to conclude the week Maroon and White Day with everyone dressed in those fantastic colors of maroon and white. This Spirit Week seemed to have really fired up the team as they won their Homecoming football game for the second year in a row. To get the carnival off to a grand start a Gong Show was held. Various local acts came to compete for the first place Gong Show Trophy of Excellance. Emcee of the show was Jim Johnson who played the part of Chuck Barris. Special appearances were made by The Unknown Comic (Cal Christensen) and Gene, Gene, The Dancing Machine (Randy Paulson). First place was taken by The Greasers , a singing and dancing duo of Sue and Gina Jung. The night was a huge success. The Skeleton Walks a story of suspense and horror. Involving the macabre death of an Innocent old man and the evil intentions of a mad scientist, was presented as the fall all school play in 1978. The cast included Cal Christensen, Sue Jung, Jason Haugland, Jody Haugland, Lisa Sykora, Stephen Birnbaum, Darcy LeClair, Karl Wolk, Sarah Kaus, and Shelley Ziemer. The play was directed by Mr. Engberg along with student director, Randy Madison. The play was performed before an audience of the entire school in the afternoon matinee and before an appreciative audience in the evening. The play drew rave reviews from the majority of those people who saw the play which was filled with many humorous situations. All in all, the play was fun and successful!. FROM THE CAST'S POINT OF VIEW The Skeleton Walks Practice, practice, practice!! And that's what we did, three times nearly every day. What did we have to show for it? Steve Birnbaum prancing around in a slinky sleeveless gown; Mr. Engberg getting migraine headaches; Cal Christenson's graceful entrance on stage during the matinee; and Jason Haugland putting his pajamas on backwards and inside-out, along with our black lights failing and a whole lot of laughs created a memorable experience for all. With great help from our director, and student director, we were able to put together an hour and a half of laughter and suspense. THE ALL SCHOOL PLAY 61 From left to right. Back row: K. Wolk, S. FHA again sold hot dogs, coffee, and hot chocolate to warm the spectators at the chilly football games. They also sold BBQ's, popcorn balls, and bars during school. FHA held a Costume Day this year on Halloween. Students were to come to school dressed in costumes. A good number of students put on their weirdest get- ups and enjoyed a day of lots of fun and laughter. It has been a good year for FHA. 1 LETTER CLUB Left to right. Back row: D. Deyo, S. Kaus, S. With only five returning lettermen, we were lacking the experience it took to have the winning season the squad was aiming for. Besides experience, the Valley team was also lacking in size and overall speed. Despite having these catagories favoring their opponents in every game, the T-Birds were able to taste victory; and in most of their games were able to play even ball until a big play by the opponents would spark them to victory. Besides gaining a lot of experience for next year, we felt we accomplished a lot for the future success of football in Browns Valley that doesn't show up in the records. Nineteen returning lettermen will be the strong point next year as they will be shooting for the 1st winning season in Browns Valley since 1966. The season found the young T-Birds being defeated more often than they were winning ... but tried to use each games experiences to build for upcoming games and the future. Games won were with arch- rival Beardsley at home early in the season and the final home game against Milan to climax an exciting Parents Night in which both boys and girls won. Bright spots constantly showed up on the court many times bright enough to overshadow the dark ones and many contests were kept close until the final minutes when a lack of experience and patience began to take its toll. The rebuilding year now finished, the lessons learned through defeat, the summer to grow and improve ... the future In their hands , the T-Birds hold the promise of success. VARSITY FINISHES 2ND IN DISTRICT TOURNY When the wrestling season opened the grapplers were confident that it would be a successful season. The first five duals though ended in defeat for the wrestlers. But going into the Clear Lake Tourney the team was still in good spirits as they came away winning two duals and losing one to capture the third place trophy. Starting at the Clear Lake Tourney, things started to go for the bad as we lost Steve Birnbaum, and then later lost Jeff LeClair and Dennis Duffield. With injuries plaguing the team, the team still came away with two more dual wins. Going into Conference Tournaments with a 4-10 record, nobody expected us to do anything. But every year, tournament time seems to be the bright spot of the year as that was proved as the wrestlers came away with a second place trophy. For as young as the team is, we showed real depth and know-how. Individually, we took 2 first places, 5 third places, and 1 fourth place. With a fine showing in conference, the wrestlers planned on making a go at it in Districts. With all but two wrestlers returning next year, the team should have plenty to look forward to. High scores and exciting plays highlighted the Thunderbird baseball season. Led by seniors Jack Appel, Tim Volk, and Jeff Paulson the T-Birds totaled 78 runs in ten games and finished with a 5-5 record. The Thunderbirds tied for third in the Pheasant Conference with wins over Clinton, Starbuck, and Graceville. Loses came at the hands of Chokio, Bellingham, and Hancock. District action saw the Thunderbirds win their opening round game with Graceville and lose their next contest to Morris. Paulson led the team in batting with a 417 average. Volk led in runs batted in with a record 17. Underclassmen Steve Birnbaum had nine hits and Dave Mckee a .333 average. Jeff LeClair hit .364 before being sidelined with a broken bone. Seniors Karl Wolk and Steve Birnbaum will lead BV in 1979. Juniors Randy Paulson, Von Peterson, Jim Domarus, Jeff LeClair, and Terry Miller will add experience to the T- Bird lineup. The 1977-78 track team did fairly well considering the small number of guys who were out. The team was led by senior Brian Mollenhoff. There was noticeable improvement all year long as the team peaked at conference track meet. The 440 relay team took 4th place which consisted of Karl Wolk, Von Peterson, Dean Deyo, and Brian Mollenhoff. The mile relay team took 4th place which consisted of Stephen Birnbaum, Brian Mollenhoff, Mike Toelle, and Dean Deyo. Individually Dean Deyo took 4th place in the 440 and 5th in the 220 sprint. Stephen Birnbaum placed 4th in the mile. Only loosing one senior the track team has high hopes for this coming year.
