Schley The band began in the fall with pep music for football and basketball games. Even in Pep band, the musical effect became outstanding. As the pros would say, We had a swingin band. From Pep Band music we gradually turned to the intricate passages of Concert Band. The trans- formation started slowly, but rapidly became a reality. By the time of the Spring Concert, we were a polished, near-professional concert organization. Included in our concert were two se- lections, E Suite”, and Slavonic Dances , which we would later take to the music contests. As I told you after this concert, this was the finest concert that I had ever directed. We achieved the ultimate in contest performance with the honor of receiving a Superior rating at the District Music Contest at Hancock and a unanimous ( 3 ) superior rating at the Region-State Music Contest in Morris. The State Superior being the first one for Browns Valley since 1953, I am very proud of this fine organization and of its achievements. To the Band: A precedent has now been laid down, and in the time to come, it will be up to you to uphold the quality and spirit of this band. With much work and ambition you will have the power to keep the band moving toward greater goals. To the Seniors: I am very proud of you and this fine band that you have helped me to pro- duce. You have been a wonderful group to work with and an inspiration to me to do my best. You will leave behind you a big vacancy in this band, and a very enduring memory to me.
