Music selections ranged from the light, humorous variety, such as ’There’s a Hole in My Bucket’ to religious numbers, some of which were sung in Latin. The highlight of the music season was the annual music contest, which was held in Benson, Minn. As this event was held April 1st and 2nd, the results of the contest could not be listed in this annual. The choral Christmas Concert consisted of two parts. Religious selections by the chorus, glee clubs, and a junior girls’ glee, accompanied by narration of the Christmas story composed the first half of the concert. The last division of the program was the informal singing of the traditional carols by the chor- us as a madrigal group. Small groups within the mixed chorus also performed during the school year. A girls’ quartet, composed of Carol Roerig, Karen Vollmers, Delores Westman, and Liz Dierks, sang Makin’ Love, Ukelele Style in the Graceville exchange con- cert and also in a home concert. Other small groups included a girls’ sextet, a mixed octet, and a boys’ quartet. At the time of compiling this annual, these groups had not yet made public appearances, although preparations for contest were being made. Plans were made during February to purchase choir robes for the entire mixed chorus. Financing this project were the proceeds from last year’s chorus pro- duction of the ’Mikado, freewill collections at band concerts, and projects of the band and chorus mothers. Next year’s school carnival will be sponsored by the band, with all profits going to the music fund. 22

In a newly-established exchange concert program, the BVHS band performed at Graceville earlier in the year. The original plan was to give concerts in both Graceville and Beardsley on the same day, but the concert at Beardsley was cancelled due to a time conflict. Bands from both of these towns were also scheduled to appear here towards the end of the year. Band selections played in the Graceville concert were: Block M (Bilik), If Thou Be Near (Bach), The Marriage of Figaro (Mozart), Die Meistersinger (Wagner), The Look Sharp March (Arr. Yoder), Allan-A-Dale (Hanson), El Chaco (Logan), and Six Mellow Winds (Schanke). The girls’ quartet and the boys’ glee club also appeared, with the girls singing Makin» Love, Ukelele Style and the boys singing Stouthearted Men. This same program was given at a home concert on November 20, 1959. Band officers for this school year were: President, Dwight Medbery; Vice- President, Janet Roerig; Secretary, Delores Westman; Treasurer, Brenda McAl- ister; Property Manager, Kenny Roerig; Uniform Manager, Jackie Duffield; Li- brarians, Lovell McAlister and Gayle Jacobson; Reporter, Virginia Hedrick. The band and the other musical organizations would like to express their ap- preciation to Mr. Affeldt for the tremendous job he has done in the BVHS music department in his first year of teaching.
