1 The Senior Class . of Browns Valley, Minnesota Presents | 1 r j 4 1 196 0 1 1 1 ) c R 3 Editor 1 Delores Westman 1 R ) DEDICATION The Senior Class of i960 takes great pride in dedicating this yearbook to Mr. J.E. Oys, Jr., principal of Browns Valley High School. Among Mr. Oys accomplishments while at BVHS is the establishment of the Charles M. Dale Chapter of the National Honor Society. Mr. Oys has untiringly stressed the importance of scholarship, character, service, and leadership, the four basic requirements for membership in this national organization. Due to his strong influence in this field, many students have recognized the wis- dom in his words and have applied themselves more diligently to their studies and self-improvement. He is also responsible for the changed attitude of the students regarding good grades-—high marks are now regarded as a worthy goal for which to strive. Vocational guidance work is another field in which Mr. Oys excels. Any of the college-bound seniors will verify this statement. They will all relate simi- lar stories of countless letters to colleges, written in their behalf? of ex- pense-paid visits to colleges? of helpful and timely advice and assistance in regard to scholarships, job opportunities, and choices of colleges. We Seniors, along with the remainder of the student body, now take this op- portunity to express our respect and admiration for Mr. Oys. We will always remember his classes. Biology and Senior Social, as two of the most enjoyable and worthwhile of our high school years. In his classroom, we have learned much and laughed much. He has guided without pushing, advised without order- ing. For all he has done for BVHS, we again say ThanksI 2 ■1 CAROL ROERIG CO-SALUTATORIAN NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY NEWSPAPER EDITOR DAVID WESTBROCK OUTSTANDING ATHLETE NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY SENIOR CLASS PRESIDENT FOOTBALL CAPTAIN DELORES WESTMAN VALEDICTORIAN NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY ANNUAL EDITOR JUDY ZIMMERMAN FACULTY AWARD HOMECOMING QUEEN DAVID HEIN WHO FACULTY AWARD JEROME ZACHARIAS OUTSTANDING ATHLETE STUDENT COUNCIL PRESIDENT TRACK CO-CAPTAIN WRESTLING CAPTAIN 3 LISETTE DIERKS CO-SALUTATORIAN NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY RAYMOND LECUYER OUTSTANDING ATHLETE TRACK CO-CAPTAIN Hazel's Beauty Shop Phone OWen 4-1971 Open Evenings By Appointment Browns Valley, Minn. 48,' PROM APRIL 30, 1959 lh rr i J (I x v . m I ll ! 1 ( 5 JUDY ZIMMERMAN HOMECOMING QUEEN Her sweet disposition, her lovely personality, and her friendly nature make Judy richly deserving of this honor. 6 Clockwise: Marlene Lureen (7th), Helen Homan (9th), Diane Simonson (11th), Karen Vollmers (12th), Queen Judy Zimmerman, Carol Hedrick (12th), Barbara Zacharias (10th), Loretta Sweeney (8th) HOMECOMING STUDENT COUNCIL Student Council officers are: President: Jerome Zacharias Vice President: Jerry Holland Sec. No scenery was used. The audience arrived to find an emp- ty stage before them with the Stage Manager, one of the principal actors, loun- ging in the background, watching the new arrivals. Such a setting was rather different from the usual types of plays presented by high school groups. In the first act the author genially outlines the hostory of the town, which is Grover’s Corners, N.H., and something of the character of its citizens. Then he carries you into the houses of the Gibbs and Webb families, substantial homes containing substantial folk. You arrive at breakfast time and are carried through one entire day in the lives of these good people. The second act concerns the love affair between young George Gibbs and little Emily Webb, and thus culminates in a moving wedding scene, which contains all those elements of poignant sorrow and abundant happiness that make for solemni- ty and impressiveness. In the third act we are led to the cemetery on the hill, where many of the fine townspeople we have come to know so well are patiently and smilingly awaiting not judgment but greater understanding. Into their midst is led the bride, a little timid at first, a little wishful to go back to life, to live again with her memories. But she is shown how impossible, how futile it is to return. The past cannot be relived. Living people, humans, occupied with their petty occupa tions and small thoughts, know little of true joy or happiness. Truth is to be found only in the future. 10 Kneeling: Richard Lubbers, Maurice Sweeney, Jerome Zacharias, David Westbrock, Jim Homan, David Hein, Grant Canfield Middle: Mr. Lewis, Steve Haugland, David Schwagel, Gary Lub- bers, Isaac Haggerty, Vernon Bartz, Allen Gardner, Mr. Kry- stosek, Mr. Johnson Top: Gary Cardwell, Terry Piechowski, Jerome Serocki, Kervin Steen, Lawrence Sykora, Rodney Larson, LaVerne Ballhagen Not pictured: Ray LeCuyer, Gordon DeSpiegler, John Haggerty, Erwin Kallstrom U N D E F E A T E D For the first time in BVHS history, we can boast of an unde- feated football squad. Competition within our Pheasant Con- ference was high; therefore, Mr. Lewis and his players can look back with pride on a very satisfying year. At the end of the season, the conference coaches met to select an All Conference Team. Those named from our squad were Captain David Westbrock, fullback; Terry Piechowski, tackle; and Je- rome Zacharias, end. These boys can well feel honored, but in the student body’s opinion, the entire BV 59-60 football squad is our All Concerence Team. Our sincere admiration goes to Mr. Lewis, who in only his second year of teaching, has produced not only an undefeated football team, but al- so a champion track team for our school. By defeating Clinton and Chokio, we won our way into the district com- petition. Chokio won the runnerup title, and Beardsley captured the oonsolation crown. BVHS shared the conference championship with Beardsley; both teams had a 10 win, 2 loss conference record. Coach Gay Johnson’s boys completed the entire season with a 17 win, 3 loss standing. The 1959-60 school year will probably go down as the best athletic year in BVHS history. Titles and championships have been captured in every sport. Last spring the track squad set new school records and won many important meets, some of which involved competition from much larger schools. The baseball team won all their scheduled games; the football squad was undefeated for the first time in school history. In the wrestling field, Zacharias won his way into the state meet. With the basketball title, BVHS has had an outstanding athletic season which may never again be equalled for a long, long time. Tobeck The 59-60 track season was a smashing success due to the efforts of the boys and their coaches, Mr, Lewis and Mr, Krystosek. Eight school records were broken: 440 Relay, 440 Dash, Shotput, High Hurdles, High Jump, Low Hurdles, Pole Vault, and Mile Run. Against rough competition from many larger schools, the B.V. boys totaled the most points in the Dragon Relays at Moorhead, and brought back the championship of this event. By the end of the season, the team also had become conference and B.V. triangular champs. Co-captains were Ray LeCuyer and Jerome Zacharias, both of whom are excellent trackmen. Zac competed in the state meet as a pole vaulter, and made a fine showing. Congratulations to the squad and the coaches for a tremendous season. SCHOOL RECORD BREAKERS 440 Relay Team: 48.3 sec. Music selections ranged from the light, humorous variety, such as ’There’s a Hole in My Bucket’ to religious numbers, some of which were sung in Latin. The highlight of the music season was the annual music contest, which was held in Benson, Minn. As this event was held April 1st and 2nd, the results of the contest could not be listed in this annual. The choral Christmas Concert consisted of two parts. Religious selections by the chorus, glee clubs, and a junior girls’ glee, accompanied by narration of the Christmas story composed the first half of the concert. The last division of the program was the informal singing of the traditional carols by the chor- us as a madrigal group. Small groups within the mixed chorus also performed during the school year. A girls’ quartet, composed of Carol Roerig, Karen Vollmers, Delores Westman, and Liz Dierks, sang Makin’ Love, Ukelele Style in the Graceville exchange con- cert and also in a home concert. Other small groups included a girls’ sextet, a mixed octet, and a boys’ quartet. At the time of compiling this annual, these groups had not yet made public appearances, although preparations for contest were being made. Plans were made during February to purchase choir robes for the entire mixed chorus. Financing this project were the proceeds from last year’s chorus pro- duction of the ’Mikado, freewill collections at band concerts, and projects of the band and chorus mothers. Next year’s school carnival will be sponsored by the band, with all profits going to the music fund. 22 Row 1: Dennis Dahl, Virgil Hein, Dennis Agar, Eugene Labs Gary Foster, Steve Haugland, Mr. Affeldt. In a newly-established exchange concert program, the BVHS band performed at Graceville earlier in the year. The original plan was to give concerts in both Graceville and Beardsley on the same day, but the concert at Beardsley was cancelled due to a time conflict. Bands from both of these towns were also scheduled to appear here towards the end of the year. Band selections played in the Graceville concert were: Block M (Bilik), If Thou Be Near (Bach), The Marriage of Figaro (Mozart), Die Meistersinger (Wagner), The Look Sharp March (Arr. Yoder), Allan-A-Dale (Hanson), El Chaco (Logan), and Six Mellow Winds (Schanke). The girls’ quartet and the boys’ glee club also appeared, with the girls singing Makin Love, Ukelele Style and the boys singing Stouthearted Men. This same program was given at a home concert on November 20, 1959. Band officers for this school year were: President, Dwight Medbery; Vice- President, Janet Roerig; Secretary, Delores Westman; Treasurer, Brenda McAl- ister; Property Manager, Kenny Roerig; Uniform Manager, Jackie Duffield; Li- brarians, Lovell McAlister and Gayle Jacobson; Reporter, Virginia Hedrick. The band and the other musical organizations would like to express their ap- preciation to Mr. Affeldt for the tremendous job he has done in the BVHS music department in his first year of teaching.
