eh; TO CROCKETT JOHNSON... . . . whose whimsical pen gave life to Barnaby. To achieve such a happy blend of droH wisdom and high good humor is a considerable accomplishment. Mr. O'Maiiey and his entourage stand as undeniable proof that there is a place for fairy godfathers, not only in the magic realm of childhood, but in the considerably more mundane sphere of adulthood . . . Perhaps Crockett Johnson did not foresee Mr. O'Maiiey in the role of mentor to eight hundred coiiege women, but he is just that in Brun Maei . . . it has been a pleasure working with both creator and creation, and we thank Mr. Johnson, not only for allowing Brun Maei to bring his remarkable characters to Pembroke, but for allowing such liberty in their adaptation.

9 This '0 is BARNABY. He is a very small and a very wise boy who knows a great deal more I x. 3-, about reality than some older people do. Among other things, Barnaby has 0 Fairy Godfather, and, as anyone will tell you, this is a great advantage to small and wise boys . . . MR. O'MALLEY is his name and he looks like this terms with other fairies, and certain ghosts and dogs. He is a bona tide member of the xiElves', Leprechaunts, Gnome's, and Little Men's Chowder and Marching Society; he has been nearly everywhere and seen almost everything. He smokes Barnaby's father's cigars. He also flies. When there is something Mr. O'Malley doesntt know ihardly everi he asks ATLAS, the Mental Giant who has a slide rule. Once, with his slide rule, Atlas even divided up the post war world to please everybody. GUS, the Ghost, is another good friend of Mr. OiMaHey's. He is a very nice, polite ghost, although he is afraid of the dark and of strange noises in old houses . . . Besides Mr. OiMaIley, Barnaby has a dog ARH ARH ARF! named GORGON who can talk. Gorgon has taught himself to sit up, roll over and beg. He has been allowed to accompany Barnaby and Mr. O'Malley on their journey, even though he sometimes tells shaggy-dog stories.
