1953 BRUN MAEL PEMBROKE COLLEGE IN BROWN UNIVERSITY PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND eh; TO CROCKETT JOHNSON... . . . whose whimsical pen gave life to Barnaby. To achieve such a happy blend of droH wisdom and high good humor is a considerable accomplishment. Mr. O'Maiiey and his entourage stand as undeniable proof that there is a place for fairy godfathers, not only in the magic realm of childhood, but in the considerably more mundane sphere of adulthood . . . Perhaps Crockett Johnson did not foresee Mr. O'Maiiey in the role of mentor to eight hundred coiiege women, but he is just that in Brun Maei . . . it has been a pleasure working with both creator and creation, and we thank Mr. Johnson, not only for allowing Brun Maei to bring his remarkable characters to Pembroke, but for allowing such liberty in their adaptation. 9 This '0 is BARNABY. He is a very small and a very wise boy who knows a great deal more I x. 3-, about reality than some older people do. Among other things, Barnaby has 0 Fairy Godfather, and, as anyone will tell you, this is a great advantage to small and wise boys . . . MR. O'MALLEY is his name and he looks like this terms with other fairies, and certain ghosts and dogs. He is a bona tide member of the xiElves', Leprechaunts, Gnome's, and Little Men's Chowder and Marching Society; he has been nearly everywhere and seen almost everything. He smokes Barnaby's father's cigars. He also flies. When there is something Mr. O'Malley doesntt know ihardly everi he asks ATLAS, the Mental Giant who has a slide rule. Once, with his slide rule, Atlas even divided up the post war world to please everybody. GUS, the Ghost, is another good friend of Mr. OiMaHey's. He is a very nice, polite ghost, although he is afraid of the dark and of strange noises in old houses . . . Besides Mr. OiMaIley, Barnaby has a dog ARH ARH ARF! named GORGON who can talk. Gorgon has taught himself to sit up, roll over and beg. He has been allowed to accompany Barnaby and Mr. O'Malley on their journey, even though he sometimes tells shaggy-dog stories. Cushlamochree, m'boy . . . if olmosf escaped me! For a complete picfure of college life a nominal glimpse of Me female counterparf of Brunensis is indispensable . . . ahem . . yes, I cut quiie a figure on Pembroke's campus back in . . . ahem . . . Shall we descend? Beau Brummel himself! BARNABY VIEWS PEMBROKE Itis nice for Gorgon to meet a polite, educated dog like the dean's Minns . . . I maintain that cultured companionships ore indis- pensable to the well-rounded man or beast. A friendly reception FROM MISS LEWIS AND MINNS... INNS AND I are delighted to have an opportunity to extend our good wishes to the Class of 1953. We have great confidence in the future of the members of this class because we have watched them carry the weight of responsibility as seniors with such wis- dom, skill, and grace. We feel also that they have excellent taste in dogs, and we are sure this will extend to other choices which they will make in the future. Minns insists that, had he not been forced to take so many cuts during the winter months by his unreasonable mistress, he would be graduating with this class. It breaks his heart, but then the Class of 1954 would be entirely bereaved without his cultured companionship. Lots of luck to each of you from the two of us. SOCK AND BUSKIN A masterful interpretation of Hamlet opened an especially Ene season for Sock and Buskin, the undergraduate dramatic society for Brown and Pembroke. This year saw a varied schedule of playSeranging from the unusual Glam Menagerie t0 the delightful musical, Beggar; Opera, which presented many new faces, and was outstanding in all phases of production. The skill and insight of directors Ben Brown and Miss Janice Van de Water are largely responsible for S. 8z st polished presentations. Well, m'lad, we should have you primed for the Brownv brokers audition any day now, .h r Sock and Buskin at its best. Oh, so that's what we're doing, Mr. O'Malley. All participators are Brown and Pem- broke students, who, last spring, produced Anything Can Be Fixed, Which received spe- cial distinction with the publication of its score. Words and music were by Gil Bach, and Alan Levy wrote the comedy. WBRU is the radio voice of Brown Uni- versity and Pembroke College. The policy of the Pembroke Record is to reflect the interests of the college and to formulate student opinion. This yearis staf? preserved these standards with timely news, pertinent feature articles, up-to-date reviews and criticisms, and a series of constructive editorials. Currents of opinion were impar- tially presented in such events as the presi- dential election, when surveys. and polls were conducted and a special issue was pub- lished with the Brown Daily Herald. The Record fulhlled its role by backing major drives, publicizing committees, and keeping every student aware of the constantly shift- ing campus scene. Bi- weekly meetings are held and among the many activities are outings, work projects, discus- sion groups, and lectures. 24 The Interfaith Council is a comparatively new organization at Pembroke. Established in 1952, the council endeavors to stimulate religious activity and to create better under- standing between all Brown and Pembroke religious groups. Its main concerns were the promotion of interfaith education in co- ordination with Embassy Week and the establishment of a social service program. The organization is composed of the highest female oHicers of religious groups on campus, a Social Service chairman, a Publicity Chairman, and the Religious Embassy Chair- man for Pembroke. An informal gathering. HILLEL Hillel satishes the needs of the Jewish stu- dent on campus and stimulates religious and cultural activities through lively meetings, educational and humorous programs, in- formal brunches, and enjoyable social afT'airs. This year the publication of a newspaper, the presentation of skits, and the production of a TV program provided outlets for creative talents. Communion breakfast. CANTERBURY CLUB The Canterbury Club offers to Episcopa- lian students of Brown and Pembroke a varied program of worship, study, social affairs, fun, and fellowship. SIGMA XI Sigma Xi is the national scientific honor society and was chartered at Brown in 1900. In order to qualify as an associate member, an undergraduate must show marked ex- cellence in two or more fields of pure or ap- plied science. The Greek letters stand for companions in zealous research? The object of Sigma Xi is to encourage original research in science. The society holds annual conventions and publishes the Sigma Xi Quarterly Magazine. Ruth Hessenthaler. 29 . . and so gentlemen, as regards the Brooks and Warren revolt against authorship, I conjecture and maintain that a poem, indeed Speaking generaIIyJ, nearly every piece of literature, has an author. Refreshments are served, during which time the members have a chance to use their Spanish in informal conversation. Wednesday night dinner. READING SOCIETY Since its inception two years ago, the Reading Society has risen to a level of high merit on the campus. The organization was founded, after Charles Laughton,s Reading Society, by Nelson Jones, director of Faunce House, and Charles Philbrick, an instructor in the English Department. Meetings are held every other Sunday, at Which time two students and two faculty members, or some- times a guest speaker, read plays, poetry, and essays to the members and guests. Liz Anne Gwaltneyeactiw Jecretary. The French Club is open to all students interested in the French language and cul- ture. It meets every Friday afternoon at 4 olclock under the direction of Mr. and Mrs. Barenbaum. The club,s activities include dances, lectures, and informal discussions. Every Wednesday night there are two tables at Pembroke where only French is spoken. The French Club also produces a play each year and publishes a French newspaper, the Pourquoi Pay. Marion and Mary Ellen take a break while planning a Sunday afternoon program. 33 FRENCH CLUB And so if is evident that when the wild imagination of a child is castigated of the illusory maffer and pure fantasy of its mind, for example, fhe existence of Sanfa Claus and fairy peoples, or fhe ability of his pets f0 converse rationally in the English language- fhe trauma is sumcienf to permanently impair the mental faculties of the child. HONOR COUNCIL As the judiciary body under the new honor code, installed in the spring of 1952, Honor Council has taken ove'r the Dorm Councilts task of handling violations of the code. Aside from this all-impottant job, the group must also coordinate the various dormitory functions. It arranged for the dis- tribution of the baskets of food to the needy at Thanksgiving, and also for the tradition- ally delightful Christmas and May Day Breakfasts. One of the chief aims of Honor Council is close cooperation between the administra- tion and the student body, particularly in the matter of broadening and clarifying the meaning of the Honor System. The Council deserves credit for its constant efforts to im- prove the working of and attitude toward the relatively new distribution of responsi- bility embodied in an Honor Code. 39 Lois Black, Treasurer; Darcy Porter, President; Anne Dufour, Secretary. Revolts in freshman dorms, marching down the street under senior superVision, singing and exercising on Andrews terrace, scut chapel, and sent court are all a part of the hazing. Under the leadership of Mary O,Nei1, Miller participated in all-campus and inter-dormitory activities. In a successful attempt to set a prece- dent, its girls gave a hGrey Flannelsh party for invited guests. The dorm added to Christmas weekend festivities with its HChristmas in Candy- Iand,, dance on the evening of the formal. Peg Lange won for her house the Fashion Show cup and title of Best-Dressed Dormitory. This year, Miss Gretchen Tonks came from Texas to become Millerhs enthusiastic housemother as well as Assistant Dean of the college. Christmas festivities. One of the highlights of the year for the sixty- Eve hillegitst, of Metcalps house mother, Doris. Watts, was the Christmas Dance. Large murals depicting the Twelve Days of Christmas lined the walls. Drums, geese, pipers, lads, and ladies looked down upon the dancers, while favors, of five golden rings, carried out the theme. Metcalf held a television party the night of elections, and the girls kept themselves awake with coffee, cider, and doughnuts until the final results came through. Never before have parents responded as they have for us and our book. We counted heavily on them to help make this book a 'better one; they came through for us overwhelmingly, and l, the staff, and the student body, heartily thank them. I would like to extend my appreciation also, to Bill Sloane for his patience and sound advice and to the student activities omce for special favors and help in book- keeping; to Dick Mallish and his airplane and Ed Goodwin and his daring for making possible our aerial view; to Harry Dodge for coming to the rescue with pictures for our second deadline. I am particularly grateful to Crockett Johnson for giving us full rights to all 'chrnaby material, and to Miss Law and her staff for working out our wildest schemes. To the l953 Brun Mael staff a special thank you for all their cooperation and hard work, which I know included everything from trudging all over Providence to playing television bit roles! To all the editors of this book, my most personal thanks. They somehow managed in every crisis,- and, what's more, came through smiling! 167 PATRONS AND PATRONESSES MR. AND MRS. HAROLD L. ABBOTT MR. We wish to thank these business men and women, and ask that you identify and remember them. We know that there are more profitable advertising media than our year book; that our advertisers believe such a book needs and deserves their support. We gratefully acknowledge this support. It measures the diFFerence between a good book and a better one. With their did, we have attempted a better one. 171 STUDENT DIRECTORY ABBmT, SALLY U ............................ 10 Highland Ave., Beverly, Mass ....................... 1955 ADAMS, MARY-LOUISE ........................ 22 Burton Sn, Bristol, R.
