The feelings of expectation, excite- ment, and terror experienced during the first week at school are unlikely to be relived, but they will not be forgotten. Orientation week this year began earlier than usual owing to the adjustments of the new calendar, only thought of as new by the outgoing senior class. Eager first year students and their parents were welcomed to Brown by enthusiastic Ori- entation Week committee members clad in their customary white t-shirts and hats. Parents were kept busy with colloquia and a reception at the President's resi- dence. At the end of the first day, after teary farewells and reminders to call home, students were left to explore Brown on their own. Orientation week was marked by many social events which culminated in a freshman mixer. Academic information was provided throughout the week through department open houses and ad- visor meetings. Activity night introduced students to extra curricular options. The traditional trip to Newport highlighted the week and provided a fitting end. e D VR W R N 5 N WD 4 28

30 Envision the quintessential New England school: a medium-sized student body; a respected faculty; loyal alumni; and a quaint campus. Does it remind you at all of Brown? The producers of the N.B.C. Today Show thought so when they chose our school - together with the University of Michigan, a typical public university - to feature on a special college edition. Several weeks before the airing of the show on October 17, film crews arrived at Brown to com- pile footage of students and teachers in class, at study, and at play. Short segments were taped on topics ranging from fashion to architecture. The live portion of the show was made up of student interviews, a chat with President Swearer, and an inspirational performance by our own Brown
