Mathematics at Brown encompasses pure Math, Applied Apple' Math, and History of Math. The three distinct mathe- matics departments, each notably strong, offer students the op- portunity to concentrate in any aspect of math while benefitting from the other departments. Cooperation between the Applied Math and the Math departments is constant, and concentration requirements often cross departmental lines. A college education centered around the differential equation may lead to many careers besides high school or college teaching. Problem solving ability is essential to practically every field, and at least one pre-medical or pre-law student can always be found in Math 153. Several departments deal with the way people communicate. The foreign language departments, the English department and the linguistics department all are concerned with the nature of written and verbal exchange. The English department, while not the best of departments, was not the worst of departments. In the past, aspiring creative writers found it to be both the spring of hope and the winter of despair, as writing classes were few and hard to obtain, popular because of the reknown instructors and professors. Recently the situation has improved with the expansion of the writing pro- gram, the institution of the writing fellows program, and the opening of the Elmer Blistein House for the graduate writing program. The epoch of the belief that anyone at Brown can write effectively is dawning, no matter what the language. LINGUISTICS DEPARTMENT ROOM 205 et DEPARTMENT OF SLAVIC LANGUAGES ROOM 205

OOD HOUSE N CIVILIZATION A student once complained, In social situations, history majors are being constantly stood up for pre-meds and other 'guaranteed employment'-type majors. At Brown, that par- jlel is doubtful - the history department continues to have one of the highest concentration enrollments, attracting in- tellectually aggressive'' students and a well-published facul- ty. yNext to the Arco station on Angell Street, the history department is in a charming old building known for its dark woodworking and attractive interior. The department has also expanded beyond its central location to offices in Alum- nae Hall and Fones Alley. The increasing popularity in what is one of Brown's best departments, according to Fiske's Selective Guide to Col- leges, is proof that history majors are not being stood up at Brown or they have learned not to be at the same parties as the pre-meds. 20 UJ
