The grace distance and discipline of the boys in the boats, the Brown oarsmen, have provided a picturesque alternative to the wall to wall rowdi- ness of lvy football rivalries since time eternal, it seems. In a turn of the century race, though, the long skulls may have coursed along a more scenic Seekonk, without the scum, slime or stink of today's version. The December end of the trek out to the grid- iron has slowly been replaced by the brisk march out to whatever indoor rink, where we Bruno now go to catch the crunch of winter contact, lce Hockey. Still, it's hard to keep from imagining the battle that would undoubtedly occur if today s bigger, faster, better equipped and more studied pursuers of the sport were to step onto the ice with the turn of the century varsities. 14 Crumbling socio-sexual codes in the late thirties and forties marred the ushering in of the new regime, of what is now just Brown, a single university open to men and women. In- creasingly informal photographs picturing shirt-sleeves, bare shoulders and previously ta- booed grins point to more open interaction, in contrast to the more clandestine meetings we know must have occurred in the days of the wunsmiling single-sex photos. C'mon, you didnt hate each other all that much did you? So much has this mingling progressed that we now have dorm floors coed by rooms, a coed fra- ternity and a coed dialogue in graffitti on the wall of a bath- room in Pembroke Hall.
