Pembroke, or 'The Women's College in Brown University, had progressed from a lone coed enrolled in Brown's cur- riculum in 1891, to having its own resi- dences, sororities, sports, and literary and entertainment societies for its 1907 en- rollment of 184 Cries of Shrew' could already be heard emanating from the Brown campus, as the women consistent ly bested the men in academics, a now timeless tradition. Not that the competition wasn't good natured. o T R N Despite the disdainful words spoken in stag, the men of '07 were like mares straining at the bit to increase contact with the coeds at the other campus. They listed being lounge lizards', l'embroke women and women and song as among their favorite pastimes and made the lewd- icrous suggestion that the 'Brokers be allowed in the Colgate-Hoyt swimming pool. Astute readers might well notice a significant noun missing from the phrase women and song', and indeed, it would be misleading to deny the timeless presence of alcohol at Brown. B. Casey, 07 wrote: And when ve had one social glass or more I stagger up the hill, kick in the door, Fall on my ear and gently 'gin to snore In the cold, grey dawn. Even Prohibition did little to dry up the image of Brown men scattering the suds on a pitcher of ale, or sneaking a slug from a hip flask at a Pembroke tea. Things got so bad at one point, that the Herald began to editorialize about the bad image the overconsuming was giving the boys on the hill.
