Pembroke, or 'The Women's College in Brown University, had progressed from a lone coed enrolled in Brown's cur- riculum in 1891, to having its own resi- dences, sororities, sports, and literary and entertainment societies for its 1907 en- rollment of 184 Cries of Shrew' could already be heard emanating from the Brown campus, as the women consistent ly bested the men in academics, a now timeless tradition. Men christened with names like Sum- ner, Huntington, Phineas, Ambrose, Clayton, Clemner, and Horace clutched to nicknames like Spike , Beeder, Bronc, Doc, Kid , and Newt , as if they knew that the end was near and they were soon to be booted from the sandbox. If you weren't in a fraternity you were out of the mainstream and while you might be seen around a Pem- broke pink tea one night you might just as likely be found around a four man game of five card stud the next. Week- ends you might be off to Northhampton to practice your parlor tactics with Ho- lyoke's nubile young women, who were good for a laugh, a gossip, and occasion- ally a good time.
