Liber 1905 Seventy years ago the editors of Liber set out to immortalize the most pleasant aspects of the In- stitution called Brown University. We have attempted to immortal- ize the people who make the In- stitution a viable entity. We asked ourselves if, in four years, we had changed Brown, or if Brown had changed us. Our thoughts and personalities are boldly etched on every facet of the University e.g. the bathrooms in the Rock and the desks in Sayles Hall. We have been neither as loud nor as mili- tant as our predecessors, but, nonetheless, as penetrating and distinctive. Thus we come to the purpose of this composite of lit- erary and artistic talents: a book of essays that remind us of what we were when we came to Brown and what has happened to us along the way, and a book of pic- tures to show us what we have become. For those who think that Brown has been an experience in intellectual finger-painting, read no further for this book was not composed for you. For those who think that you have changed Brown as much as it has changed you, read on for we think that we have captured something of the Brown experience within these pages. Providence has built skyscrapers and Brown has bought buildings. Providence built the Rhode Island Hospital Trust Build- ing and Brown built the Science Library. Providence put red and green lights on the Rhode Island Hospital Trust building and Brown put red and green bricks on the New Pembroke dorms. Brown's is a history of expansion and coexistence. e F 5 S PR g - nnnnnn '.M; R LY s x III!IIIIIIilIIII ' ' ' e Jg-m ! iifsii11'iiiinn11 iiinf1iifs 111 Wa HIIIIlIiIIIIIIHIBnlIIIIliIIIIIIIIII!IIIIIII JWIIIIIIIIIIIHIHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIHIIIIIIIIII ' fg Gk 15 16 87 Prospect St. was the grand old lady of Brown dorms. Even those who never knew her well admired her air of elderly grandeur, her decayed formal gardens and her marvelously spacious rooms. The news of her marriage to a harsh, modern addition was disheartening. This was no love match but a marriage of necessity, the only way to guarantee her future. The old lady wasn't economi- cal. Nonetheless, it will be difficult to think of her with the same respect when she's so oddly coupled with those tiny, cinderblock rooms. 17 Of course, 87 Prospect St. was luckier than other buildings of her generation. Who could ever forget the sad spectacle of Angell Hall cowering beneath the shadow of the Sciences Library? That fine, old building crouched miserably for a year waiting for the release into oblivion. West House looks distinctly uncomfortable these days, sandwiched as she is be-i tween the barren backside of Andrews and the raw new Pembroke dorms. She's lost some of her reassur- ing matronly air since her brash young neighbor 1 moved in. 20 Pr L e Some buildings have made an effort to change with the times. The lvy Room went in for the rejuvenation of extensive plastic surgery. It surrendered its bath- room look and took on something of the appearance of a place to eat. The Bryant Dining Hall changed its name and decked itself out in pseudo-brick walls and real wooden booths and became a snack bar. These two were not old places; they were young enough to learn new roles. One wonders if South Hall, as grand and aged as 87 Prospect St., will weather the transformation as well as did its younger neighbors. 21 It hasn't been easy for the new buildings either. Indeed, in some ways the young buildings are the most pathetic victims of the hard times. They never knew the pride of mahogany bannisters, the airi- ness of large rooms, or the warm comfort of solid walls. They were born poor, cramped, cold and odd- ly weak and vulnerable. The Young Orchards, for example, seem at first glance to be arrogant and cocky in their challenge to all aesthetic value. As one gets to know them better, one sees how weak they really are; how quickly their naked, concrete stairs wear down, how delicate their plumbing is, how quickly the newness wears off their tough, unbeautiful rugs and their graceless furniture. One cannot dis- like the Young Orchards, one can only pity them. They are sickly children doomed to an early death. -t LS 24 The new Pembroke dorms are almost winning in their eagerness to please. They wear their oddly colored enamel tiles as hopefully as a child who has gotten into its mother's make-up. As if they were aware that their effort at prettiness has failed, they hide behind a shell of fortress-like walls. In an attempt at conciliation with the enemy eye, they offer on their Thayer St. side, an assortment of shops. They hope, it seems, to lure the eye away from their awkward, vulnerable exteriors and into their earnest little hearts. It has been a hard few years for buildings. The Green has fared much better. Trees, it is true, have died of Dutch Elm Disease in spite of the best in modern medical care. They have been replaced, however, by a new generation of graceful, young trees who promise future splendor. Flowers now join the flowering trees and bushes in the annual exuberant tribute to spring. An expensive and not altogether unpleasant bit of sculpture has established itself on the Green. And U.H.? U.H. is un- changed. It is a calm and confident old veteran. It wears its historic plaques like medals of endurance. It has outlived many generations of buildings. So calm is it, that its outward demeanor betrays not one trace of an undignified, if understandable, impatience to outlive this present architec- tural generation. 28 l 29 V- ng 3 . s h ok - 3 IR WP SR R i e I L32d ; . $, . I find myself occasionally in that second phase confronting the question that haunted me as a sub- frosh: Whither Brown? So, without wallowing in the realm of what might have been , I will grope to define perhaps the only factor of life at Brown which has caused me to second guess my decision to enroll here. 37 8 L32d I vaguely remember reading a series of short stories by Hawthorne in which the protagonist dies because the force of his intellect has exceeded, and devoured, the force of his heart. Despite Brown's emphasis on a humanistic approach to educa- tion, I find myself having to fight off the kind of development which Hawthorne warned against. Involved each in our own academic or vocational pursuits, we un- consciously lose our sensitivity towards others. While we have a need for intimacy and a desire to share with others, the stress on intellectual achievement and growth can preclude the development of relationships; frequently people just do not have the time to be friendly. The easiest way to excuse oneself from participation in an activity is to smile meekly from behind an upraised book. And as a senior, this self- absorption, spawned by an anxiety about next year, reaches frightening levels. 39 40 I do not think that I am being anti-intellectual by suggesting that it need not be this way. I would not prefer a school where the weekends start on Thursday and last until Monday and where conversations are always devoid of intellectual content. For a humanistic education, though, we need more than just trying to integrate the course materials with a relevant social condition outside the university. We must try to inte- grate our hearts with our minds, our emotions with our rational faculties. The intellect must become part of the personality, not an excuse for the lack of one. A change like this comes from within each person, not from the institution. L'J IIMTF dll i !'NB TN QM 3 lmuulll Iy L imf m:.',jm !f I am writing as a guilty party, as one who habitually descends to B-level in the Rock and who has been an unwitting conspirator against the late-night bull session. I was never the complete intellectual being 1 did not come in that way and I won't emerge that way either but I have found myself fighting off tendencies in that direction. Is it valid to say that Brown as an institution actively encourages this, or that an institution can ac- tively encourage anything? Perhaps not, and in all fair- ness Brown does seem to ameliorate this situation, which is perhaps endemic to the prestige school. 41 42 43 P13 7 REER AT TR B i L LS 45 46 Are you tired of waiting weeks for an appointment to see a Dean? Females invaded the sanctity of the West Quad for the first time, and the term Pen- ny Pembroker went out the window as virile males took up residence on Pembroke Campus. Mothers of innocent Brown daughters were kept awake by nightmare visions of the arrangements fast becoming coed by bed. Fathers hurried their sons into the study for a crash course on birds and bees. Prospective freshmen not assigned to coed units envied their fellow students who would surely find romance and happiness down the hall, while the lucky students who were assigned coed housing rushed out to buy new pajamas. To the relief of some and the disappointment of many, coed housing did not loosen morals or promote promiscuity. The most titillating sight anyone could count on was the sexless figure draped in a bathrobe on the way to the shower. Male students did not feel the pressing urge to conduct nightly panty raids and Brown women became accustomed to the sight of men running throught the cor- ridors with their hair in curlers. As the Brown campus grew, so too did the number and popularity of coed houses. Even the fraternities began to go coed as students realized there was no limit to the extent of viable options. Thus coed living became and still is an enjoyable experience. And Brown students will live happily, together, ever after. 79 OCTOBER 1974 81 TAANID wgaAvING: CrAssis P ANTED: BV' SOriMek s K Iy UBLET 84 86 87 88 89 90 91 92 WOMEN'S TURN Students, today, are commonly characterized as serious, studious individuals overwhelming- ly concerned with grades and the job market. Despite its foundation in fact, this representa- tion may be too rigid. Clearly the frenzy of the 60's has disappeared; yet the activism of those days has merely emerged in new forms. Many of the goals sought after five and ten years ago still exist, although now articulated in terms which reflect present conditions. During the 60's, certain social sectors which had formerly been denied equal participation in established society, began to demand recog- nition. Substantial numbers of blacks, women, the elderly, and others who had traditionally been victims of discriminatory practices, not only voiced their dissatisfaction with second class citizenship, but also attempted to force entry into the heretofore closed ranks. The 70's, on the other hand, will be remembered as atimewhen acceptable societyfirst responded positively to those demands even though the more conservative elements had to be coerced into action by the more liberal forces. That such issues as equal rights for women and minorities generate so little interest among the student population indicates that the apathy of which our generation has been accused does, indeed, exist. Many will verbally acknowledge their support for such causes, yet the number who have actively worked to alleviate these social injustices within the University is remarkably small. It is difficult to explain this indifference. Certainly, the usual responses of financial uncertainty or the end of the Vietham War cannot adequately justify it. And while periods of high tension and frenetic activity soon spend themselves and die a natural death, the moral righteousness and anger of the 60's, though frequently directed indiscriminately at the whole establishment , would be welcomed at times. Those of us who are still committed idealists wonder why more have not joined our ranks even though we prefer to operate in a less obtrusive manner than did our counterparts in the 60's. During the last four years at Brown, there have been many changes favorable to women, yet gross inequities between the sexes still exist. Since the first year of the merger, the percentage of female undergraduates has only increased from 30.29 to 39.69. Currently, women comprise 10.5 of the faculty, a 3.7 increase since 1970-7 I. but if visit- ing and research appointments are excluded, the percentage of women on the regular and instructional faculty falls to 8.S. However, this increase has come entirely in untenured and visiting appointments. The number of female members of the tenured, teaching faculty has actually fallen from 3.99 in 1970-7 I to 2.4 in the present academic year. Brown does not even approach the national average of 209 women on the faculty. These figures may be found on page 2 of the Proposal for the Sarah Doyle Center, 1974. Besides documenting the numerical inequality that exists between the sexes at Brown, these figures also reveal that Brown does not have a comprehensive program designed to improve the condi- tion of women within the University. The above figures obviously reflect the University's attitude toward a limited sector of the female com- munity at Brown. In an attempt to foster a more salutary climate for all women within their walls, many universities have created a commission to investigate the status of women within their institu- tions andor have established a women's center. So far, Brown has not pursued either of these courses or suggested an alternative plan which would achieve similar results. Presently, separate proposals for a Women's Center and a Commission are under consideration by the Administration. A Women's Center would affect not only female students and faculty, but also women employees. The inclusion of the latter group in any University action directed toward women is imper- ative as women employees comprise one of the most severely oppressed groups at Brown. A Women's Center would also reach those women associated with the University in various other capacities. Again, Brown's failure to implement such a program confirms the existing lack of commitment toward the fe- male population at this University. This impression is further strengthened by the fact that, in two years, Brown still has not adopted an affirmative action plan acceptable to H.EW. as required by federal regulations. In spite of the dismal realities of the present plight of women at Brown, there have been some concrete gains over the past four years. In the area of women's sports, there has been a marked increase in the number of participants and in the amount of money allotted by the University. However, that alloca- tion does not even approach the amount designated for men's sports. Several women have assumed positions in the Administration formerly held by men. An official University committee created to sug- gest policy changes concerning female faculty members is also a new addition to Brown. Furthermore, an Affirmative Action Officer was hired two years ago to ensure Brown's compliance with newly- formulated H.E.W. Affirmative Action Guidelines. In the academic sphere, more courses focusing on women have been offered in the past few years. On the other hand, action on the proposed Women's Studies program has been delayed by the unresolved status of the faculty position in women's history. In 197 1-72, an undergraduate women's group, Women of Brown United, was formed. For the past two years, WBU has obtained permission to share a Brown-owned building with another University-affiliated organization. Last spring, WBU sponsored a Women's Festival which attracted women not only from the Brown community, but from all parts of Rhode Island. This past fall, a new organization concerned with women emerged, the Working Group on the Status of Women at Brown. This group, composed of undergraduate and graduate students, administrators, employees, alumnae, and fac- ulty, submitted the two proposals outlining the need for a comprehensive Women's Center and a Commission on the Status of Women at Brown. These collective achievements have begun to give women at Brown a sense of identity as a political force on campus. Of equal importance, however, is that the rest of the University community is begin- ning to view women in this role. The most serious foreseeable threat to the continued improvement of the status of women at Brown is the unfavor- able economic situation. A beneficient attitude toward women by the University depends, in part, on available funds with which to rectify past injustices. The economic crisis presently faced by all institutions of higher education will force colleges and universities to establish priorities in spending which will directly affect women and minorities. Col- leges and universities, in their role as educators and leaders within their communities, have a responsibility to make an unequivocal commitment to Affirmative Action. 93 94 95 96 OR FOOP sfuzwcee m e p ID inthe QVY MOM wr T8 PM TUSWA aM-ZIYqS,; dinner- bring A -friendi ID too -NO NEEB 'TO5IGN UP- 9, - 9 99 100 101 102 103 105 106 s oe An Aesthetic Experience In the Fall of 1973, Donald Hornig, President of Brown University, remarked . . . . . . The arts buoy us up in what would otherwise be a flat, monotonous existence. How dull our lives would be without the musician's stirring exploration of sound and emotion; the dramatist's wit and insight into our humanity; the poet's celebration of language; the dancer's interpretive grace; the filmmaker's commentary; the painter's flash of color; the sculptor's new images. . . . The arts gives dimension to each of us in ways that we may not fully understand, but which make the difference between simply living and being alive. . . . This University, with its commitment to the liberal arts, is committed also to the creative and performing arts as integral parts of the search for self-knowledge and understanding of others that lie at the heart of a liberal education. There is no doubt that the creative and performing arts at Brown have been the focus of a mushrooming interest among students in the last few years. The lines of students wait- ing to register for Art 57 or Art 10 attest to this as the lines grow longer and form earlier on registration day each subsequent spring. . . . Rumor has it that Spring '74 saw one ingenious Brown student camp outside the front door of the List Art Building over- night so that he would be assured of a permission slip for Art I 0 when registration began at 8:30 A.M. the next morning. Everyone else, however, roused themselves at 6:00 A.M. so that they would be at List by 7:00 A.M. when the line would begin to form, quickly worming its way across the second floor lobby, down the stairwell, through the lower lobby past the Bell Gallery, and out the front door. This occurred in spite of the commonly-known fact that there were only 60 places in Art 10 and only 240 in Art 57. The curious observer would undoubtedly wonder why any but the first sixty would bother to wait in a line that was worth at least a one or two hour wait to be ultimately in- formed that they would have to postpone their art careers until next year. The logic behind the continued waiting was clear to anyone who was still waiting. Editor's note: One reason for the waiting may be at- tributed to something known as the Justin Case Syn- drome. About half of the students who receive permis- sion slips for Art 10 ... or Art 57 ... or for that matter, Psych I ... never enroll in the courses in the fall. The syndrome manifests itself yearly in the spring in students running all over the University not necessarily by the most systematic route to obtain permission slips for every course requiring one . . . just in case they do decide to take the course in the fall. The number of students who manage to escape the grips of this dreaded syndrome is unspeakably low. But back to the waiting. . . . There was always the possibility that by some miracle the Administration would approve the hiring of six new faculty members within the hour and their waiting would not be in vain. But Brown is not a fairy tale and miracles do not happen. So the sixty Brown stu- dents who did obtain their permission slips greedily, but with great care, hid them in safe places and ran quickly past the still-waiting hordes who were by this time hanging from the bannisters in the stairwell. They were hurrying to the next checkpoint where they would stand with another three hundred students who were trying to change into Section E in Music I which had been filled from its waiting list from the previous year. 107 108 109 The enthusiasm for the Arts, however, is not to be measured solely in terms of the enrollment figures for courses in the academic disciplines. It is also reflected in the involvement of students in a variety of related campus and community activities, and in the large audiences who attend their performances. The Music Program has undergone the greatest growth over the last five years. Approximately 1400 of Brown's 5050 undergradu- ates are registered for music courses for the 1974-75 academic year, and several hundred participate in diverse, sophisticated performing groups . New groups have emerged to complement the older ones. The University Singers, an offshoot of the Chorus, Black Chorus, the Stage Band, the Chamber Choir, the Balinese Gamelan Angklung orchestra, and the new Collegium Musicum all contribute to the dimension and vitality of the Music Program, the quality and scope of which makes living in Providence less of a challenge to one's sanity. no I Ut d-- M J....-- .J,a- .--iz AT TS PR T 5 112 fx y dV 'f i i UVW by ij; 5;??;'; f J'f j JWJr!u ',JJJ'-- - g Ches MUBIE 113 114 Theatre Arts has also experienced significant growth, having formed its own degree program in 1968 under the auspices of the English De- partment. In recent years, the Brown University Theatre has been expanded to encompass such new performing groups as Production Work- shop, founded in 1960 for work in experi- mental drama; Black Theatre and Rites and Reason; Brown Modern Dance; Brown Sum- mer Theatre; and Environmental Theatre. The high quality of Brown's contribution to cultural life must be attributed to the immense talent of the faculty and students. The unfortunate economic circumstances under which the University is presently operating has taken a severe toll on all of the Humanities, but the Arts have suffered the most profound effect. With a small faculty, many of whom are working artists as well as academicians, and with no prospects for expansion in the near future, it is not surprising that the Fine Arts are finding it difficult to cope with the ever-increasing demands being made upon them by students and an enthusiastic spectating community. The Fine Arts program, therefore, plays a unique role. It serves both scholarly pursuits in the same manner as other aca- demic departments, but it also endows the quality of life at Brown with a richness unequalled by any other program at the University. The problem for the Arts presents itself in the form of a conflict of interests: Money vs. The Quality of the Program. Is Brown willing to forfeit this aspect of education because the Administration does not feel it to be crucial to Brown's survival? Perhaps Brown's survival depends more on its capacity to provide an environment in which peo- ple may learn how to think creatively and inde- pendently and understand the society in which they live. Is this not the real goal of a liberal arts education? Throughout history, art has been the medium through which the growth and develop- ment of a society may be measured. Brown's repu- tation really rests on the quality of the total environment that it creates, and the Arts are an integral part of that environment. What is needed to reinstate the Arts to their proper status in the University is a re-evaluation of Brown's financial and educational priorities, not in terms of what department has the best future but, rather, in terms of Brown's overall goals as an educational and social environment that will produce people who are knowledgable and flexible and who possess critical judgment and a sense of values. 119 120 The Class of 1975 entered Brown four years ago with unfledged flare and enthusiasm, riding the quickly diminishing tide of the sixties. It was in 197 1 that the Afro-Society began its evolution toward becoming the Organization of United African People. This move was sparked by over one hundred black freshmen exhibiting a restless desire for change a mood characteristic of the time. It was this same energy that led to acquisition of Churchill House: ignited the very successful Saturday Enrichment Program; and sent busloads of brothers and sisters to Harvard Yard to rally against Harvard's not-so-direct participation in the oppression of black Africans. Even the inactive knew what was going down, when, and why as politics was a part of life. This fire and zeal was not manifested in the political arena alone. It spilled over infesting all areas of human interest. It was in 197 1 that four brothers from New York began to redirect the course of the Brown University basketball pro- gram. With speed and an inborn ken, they brought the play- grounds of New York to the Ivy League. People took note. George Bass's theatre group, Rites and Reason, symbolically fed from this energy too. Musicals, dramas, and talent shows such as The Backdoor Coffee House and Mama Etta's Chitlin' Circuit, caused people to marvel at the black talent on this campus. Folks began to wonder who else could do what. Black Spectrum, Brown's own Rhythm and Blues group, and the Brown University Black Chorus demonstrated that the well was far from dry. Oh and, by the way, everyone knows that Steve Soares could jam on the ivory $8. All of this is positive and gives the impression that four years at Brown have been paradise for blacks. Not true. There have been pitfalls and casualties along the way paradise is still nothing but a dream. Some of the problems were caused and solved from within. Others were the direct result of actions taken by the powers that be. The automatic fee waiver for minority students, the reason why many of Brown's black students applied, was revoked. The first thousand dollars of financial aid became an automatic loan. Some courses seemed to be extremely difficult for black students to pass. And a group of black students was harassed by the Providence police at a football game in the Fall of 1973. The out- come was the arrest of one student. Rich or poor, Brown student or townie , black is black and even here in the ivy-covered walls of academia, racial factors play a major role in policy decisions. Brown University is no Utopia and has been responsible for decisions which reflect a lack of social responsibility, demonstrating a touch of benign neglect . For example, it seems that the University cannot find enough qualified black professors to round out its departments. In fact, the position of the black educator is so tenuous that these persons felt compelled to form Sankore Society, an organization specifically geared to handle these types of problems. Within four years, there has been change. The flame which fueled the activities and events of Freshman and Sophomore years has been diminished significantly. No explanation but something has happened. College presidents are not being ousted from their offices. Students are not engaging in walk-outs and brothers are not wearing black berets. The energy which highlighted the late sixties and early seventies has waned. However, racial tension is as much a part of daily life as it was in 1 968. The 1960's have left us but do not be so naive as to think that the problems which the sixties screamed about no longer exist. Exhibiting the qualities of the chameleon, they have assumed a new form bolder and more arrogant because the campuses are quiet. However, beneath the calm, the tension still lurks. Go to the Ratty at any meal. The polar- ization is evident. Take some time; attend a university sporting event; notice the clusters of Afro's; and understand that this pattern of dispersal occurs too regularly to be considered a conincidence. It is easy to point out what has been but it is a little more difficult to discern what is. A new direction has yet to firmly establish itself. Blacks are still functioning and continuing but the sparkling energy 121 122 which marked the events of Freshman and Sophomore years has all but disappeared. Some are looking back for strength during this shapeless period but look to the fu- ture. Periods define themselves with the passage of time. Blacks everywhere are inextricably part of an on-going struggle whether they acknowledge it or not. Every feat at- tempted, failed, or completed by a black person will not only effect the living but the still unborn as the movement plods on behind a banner of black skins. At times its voice can be heard brashly ar- ticulating the needs and hopes of a people. At other times, the voice grows almost silent and only a low rumbling can be heard. However, no matter what form it assumes, the movement continues. Look around at the Blacks at Brown. Many of them will blend into obscurity. Some will rise to positions of prominence. But whatever they do, or do not do, will somehow earmark the future as they are part of an irreversible movement forward a movement which slows from time to time but which always manages to plod forward. 123 124 e SPXCLaN N 126 CARBERRY CARBERRY IS NOT IS COMING COMING SINGUM DO MIND Mivy PATH MARTIAL APTS PEMONS TR AT 1 THIRSLAY DELIZ 7 iopy AJJMMAETRI BROWN UNIVERSITY 127 128 ET AL. Ever True To Brown None of us who entered Brown as freshmen that September Sunday in 197 I will ever forget the day. The skies opened, our parents said their too-long good-byes, and we trooped over to the Ratty for what seemed like an unbelievable roast beef feast. And suddenly we had to make conversation with total strang- ers. The normal questions Where ya from? Where d'ja get the Coke? used up about twenty seconds. Provi- dentially, as would be the case for the next four years, sports became the great equalizer. A guy who played soccer in the same league as you became a quick friend as you probed how far you could go cutting down his team. You found a kid who played tennis and quickly arranged a game for the next morning, the mini- colloquia could wait. And we marveled at the varsity foot- ball and soccer players who also ate in the Ratty; they all knew each other and seemed to be having a great time. I wondered, along with other freshmen I'm sure, whether I would ever fit into life at Brown as easily as these upper- classmen did. It didn't take long to find out that we would. Interest in athletics on every level became a common denominator for most men and women. Whether it was playing volleyball at a Freshman Week picnic, taking a friend to see his first hock- ey game, going out to A-D to lift, learning that Bruno is a generic term and not a football player's name, freezing in the UConn soccer stands two Novembers in a row, or just learning to hate Harvard, Penn and PC and I could come up with a million more images the world of sport influ- enced our stay at Brown immensely. More than any other facet of university life, athletics helped us cheer, laugh, groan, swear, party and even study who can forget those interminable sessions at Meehan! together, with a true sense of community. What follows are a few of the sports highlights and lowlights that come to mind in 197 5. Read the text, look at the pic- tures, grab a beer for the people always say that you can't outdrink Brown men, and then think of your own. . . . In terms of year-in, year-out success, no one can argue that here, soccer is king, and newcomers to Brown are quickly socialized to that fact. It may be distressing to midwesterners weaned on Woody Hayes, and incomprehensible to southern belles who cheered at Magnolia Blossom High, but to the ever-increasing number of soccer players and fans who come to Brown, it's great. There is no such thing as a football weekend here. Soccer shares the spotlight with football, and for good reason. They're both excellent spectator sports. We stream or straggle, depending on Friday night out to unpretentious A-D Field in time for the 10:45 whistle, or much earlier if we desire seats in the splinter-ridden bleach- ers. The sun almost always shines and almost never shines for the Wednesday games and, happily, Brown almost al- ways wins. Soccer is a game of grace and violence, and it's easy to watch and pick up. There are no helmets or pads, each play- er's name is on his back, and Cliff's shouted instructions are clearly audible from here to Woonsocket. Nothing is pre- dictable. The game can be an 18-1 laugher over BU, or a 2-0 classic over hated Penn. it can be come-from-behind or barely-hold-on. No matter what the outcome, the fans are involved. We don't sit on the bank to get tan. we bait the refs and yell encour- agement to our defense, and most importantly, we know and appreciate good soccer. Toward the middle of November, things get serious. We're fighting for the lvy League championship. In 1973 we backed into it; this year, we earned it by being the best damn team in the league. And as the winds whip across A-D in earnest, and many students head home for Thanksgiving, we're in the thick of the NCAA tournament. It's like walking a tightrope: one mistake is fatal. And it's like love: sometimes you luck out, and sometimes you get shafted when you least expect or deserve it. In '73, three consecutive overtime games, each one more unbelievable than the next, put us in the Orange Bowl where we lost to St Louis, who is to college soccer what Ed Beiser is to Brown poli sci. But this fall, a squad many felt was perhaps the best in the country fell prey twice to UConn, both times by one measly goal. That last triple-overtime loss was painful to take, both emotionally and physically, but it must rank among the alltime Memorable Moments in Brown History. Still, even though soccer is more successful in terms of total victories, football is the undisputed champ when it comes to media coverage. And our first two years here, all the media did was laugh at us. We were too young to remember the ill-fated Bear Rebel- lion' of the 1960s, so all we had was a naive kind of fresh- manic optimism when we heeded Bear Jacts TM and formed a double line to greet the football team prior to their first game. Except for one instance, a win over Penn in a field goal fes- tival, all our football victories for two years were moral ones. Then, midway through our career here, things changed. John Anderson came down from the Middlebury mountains, and suddenly a half-century-old losing tradition was scuttled. Things began slowly: the gridders salvaged a tie with URI on an all but fictional last-second 80-yard pass and conver- sion with half the stadium already out the exits, heading for the comforts of home. We lost to Penn, upset haughty Yale at home, lost to Dartmouth, and then incredible things began to happen. We stunned Princeton 7-6 at Palmer Stadium and devas- tated Cornell 17-7 in the Ithaca snows. By the time the first- place soccer and suddenly-respected football teams flew home to Providence, a welcoming reception was organized in front of the Ratty, and the campus let loose. A pep rally, of all things, was held the following Friday night before the home Harvard game. Wriston Quad rocked with cheers and chants, and funds were solicited for the Foxboro Four, the drum bandits who had been jailed in the line of duty. The next day we scored the same number of touch- downs as the Johns while losing a wild one, 35-32, but all of New England, we knew, had witnessed our stellar per- formance on ABC-TV. We made mincemeat of Columbia our last game, and by finishing 4-3-1, gave the record-keepers over at Sports Information orgasms as the searched the files in vain for performances better than '73s. We returned to Rhode Island as seniors with visions of an Ivy championship dancing in our heads. A shaky start scotched those heady hopes, but the finish this fall put even 1973 to shame. After a 1-4 start, we pounced on Princeton and Cornell to set up the second annual Brown-Harvard TV game. Soldier's Field wasn't fit for man or dog, but any Bruin fan would gladly sit on those concrete seats all afternoon again to relive what happened November 6th. We clawed our way back and hung on tenaciously, and that beautiful 10-7 win over Pineapple Holt, Pat Mclnally, and Co. made Harvard's big game with Yale the next weekend virtually meaningless. We again made mincemeat of Columbia, ended the season 5-4, and our defense gained national notice by finishing sec- ond in the world against the rush. Autumn Saturdays were the stuff of which memories are made. There were the buttons Nail 'Em, Screw Ewe, UP Chuck , the band shows our band, capable of forming a box or the universe with equal aplomb, must lead the field as the cause of irate letters to the Alumni Monthly, the healthy feeling gained from spending the entire day outdoors that is, if the blackberry brandy didn't get to you in the third quarter all these combine to assure any Brown stu- dent that he made the right choice in not going to Wesleyan or Georgetown. The fall sports season blends neatly into the winter one. As students move indoors, two buildings become the foci of Brown life-, the Rock and Meehan Auditorium. Meehan is our own personal playpen, and every hockey game played there is a happening. I can't estimate the number of hours I've spent there, becoming a Zamboni connoisseur while pretend- ing to study, but they were hours well spent. Brown hockey aficianados, who come from Phoenix as well as from Flin Flon, arrive at the rink in groups. The Sick Pup- pies stake out the front row. others prefer to be higher up, while the latecomers 6:00 get stuck viewing the underside of the press box. But once thrown together in the jovial am- biance of Meehan, the groups meld into one, ready to crazily cheer the band, lustily razz the referees, and belt out count- less choruses of the World's Greatest Fight Song. It took some time freshman year to get into the swing of things, but while the varsity faltered, we cheered for the best frosh team of all time until the next two years. Our sopho- more year saw us hovering continually around .500, but bet- ter things were expected once we became juniors. Midway through the season, after a disastrous 6-1 loss at Harvard that moved the Boston Globe to attack Brown's lumberjack crew, a change was made. New head coach Dick Toomey led us to five wins in our last eight games and hopes soared for our last winter at Meehan. This year was an enigma. We stunned Cornell in their own snakepit, scoring two goals in the final minute before winning 4-3 in overtime. We gave Harvard ranked first in the na- tion at the end of the regular season the battle of its life but finally bowed 5-3 in front of a super-appreciative Meehan crowd. Yet we lost to lesser teams, we blew big leads and, seeded seventh in our first ECAC tournament appearance in four years, faced fearsome Boston University up in the Hub. We finally put it all together and played one of those unfor- gettable games, just barely losing 5-4 in overtime. It was a sad way to end a good season, but the great feeling of bat- tling the Terriers on their own terms for 64 minutes lasted a long, long time. The basketball team was a four-year enigma. They gave us controversy, color, upset wins we had no right to expect, upset losses we had no reason to expect they gave us everything but consistency and that coveted, and oh-so-close, Ivy League title. When we were freshmen, the varsity suffered through anoth- er dismal season, as Brown hoopsters had since the days of the peach basket. But strange things were happening at the 6:1 5 frosh games. The Cubs were annihilating their opponents at a 100-plus points per game clip, and the fans were coming to watch them play, then leaving in droves when the varsity took the court. Our sophomore year was supposedly a building year, as the youngsters gained experience, but en route to a 14-12 rec- ord 10-4 in the league, we set America on its heels with back-to-back Marvel-ous wins over Penn and Princeton. 1972- 73 also saw us take a 19-2 lead over hated Providence Col- lege alias Our Lady of the Hoop , and although the Friars battled back quickly, we had served notice that for the first time since 1959, our crosstown rivals would have to take us seriously. At the spanking new Civic Center that year, our cheerleaders offended the sensibilities of the city fathers by refusing to stand for the National Anthem, and the ensuing City Council debate, which characterized Brown as a moral cesspool, united the campus in a new way and added just a little more fat to the Friar fire. That year of experience created great expectations our junior year. We rolled to our best record ever, 17-9 l 1 -3 in league play, good for an unprecedented second place, and made the Penn-Princeton home wins an annual affair. We inched closer to our first win over PC in a trillion games, taking them to two overtimes before finally succumbing, and people in the know predicted our seniors would be ominous. We were ominous ominously inconsistent. Too many times we left our game somewhere else. We won only half of the Penn-Princeton weekend before a crazed home crowd, and in the year that everyone and when you include URI, that's Everyone beat PC, we didn't. Anyone who saw the seniors' final Marvel performance, a record-filled rout of Dartmouth, had to entertain wistful thoughts of the season that might have been. Somewhat fittingly, we then went on the road and, with an NIT bid at stake, promptly dropped two to Princeton and ugh! Penn. When the ice is removed, and playing hoops outside becomes more attractive than going to Marvel, spring has come to Brown. Spring sports deserve more notice than they get. Our lacrosse team is always good they should be. the laxmen eat, breathe and, yes, sleep with their sticks. Our track team grows more exciting each year, and, even though few people ever watched them play, our baseball team featured the best college player in the country last year. But there are too many diversions around here in the spring, ranging from the Cape to exams to Dels, to appreciate spectator sports. By the time winter fades, people would much rather do than be done to. 153 154 155 156 157 158 159 161 162 a2 O 1 4 164 165 0 O 1 168 169 B e o e . Three years ago, that wasn't much. The fall program was meager, offering field hockey and fall tennis ... It didn't really matter which sport we went out for in both cases, we quickly discovered that the attitude towards the women's teams was not exactly what we had en- visioned at the college level. The coaches meekly asked us to attend practices and games as if this were not expected of a player. Uniforms were hardly in abun- dance. The field hockey squad had just enough for those on the field substitutions could be tricky! and they were lucky. The tennis team had to fend for it- self. The winter season proved a singular experience. Brown had no women's basketball team, but we were provided with the unique opportunity to play ice hockey. Uniforms were a problem here, too. We played, for the most part, in old jeans and shrunken jerseys with the word Pandas on the front. With the spring came spring tennis . . . only spring tennis, which was in much the same condition as its fall counterpart. Thus was the entirety of the women's intercollegiate program in the year of 1971-72. 1972-73 brought with it a few improvements; there was a slight increase in the budget giving the entire women's program approximately $2,000 less than the amount set aside for the men's miscellaneous expenses, and a wider range of opportunities for intercollegiate competition. We welcomed with en- thusiasm the introduction of new varsity sports: gym- nastics, coed volleyball, swimming and diving. Lacrosse was introduced as a club sport. But the truly meaningful gains began to emerge the following year. The budget was quadrupled, a signifi- cant increase which allowed for appreciable expansion of the program. With five more new varsity sports volleyball, Softball, basketball, crew and lacrosse added to the roster, we were beginning to feel a sense of the long-awaited recognition by the University. And the existing sports also reaped the benefits of our new- found wealth. At last we had enough uniforms to go around. We could go on road trips without dipping into our own pockets to pay for meals. We were no longer compelled to walk around the campus peddling candy bars and pens in order to help finance road trips. Finally, women's sports were coming into their own. We embarked on the present year to find even greater budgetary surprises. The combined effects of the Title IX bill and the efforts of Andy Geiger and Arlene Gorton have yielded impressive results. The budget projected for the 1974-75 program was again sig- nificantly increased: $27,000 or more than three times what it had been the previous year and more than fifteen times the budget of three years ago. Again, addi- tional sports track and field at the Varsity level and squash were introduced to round out the women's program. But when we look back at what has happened to women's sports over the last four years, what im- presses us most is the changed attitude of those in- volved and instrumental in the growth of the program. The women athletes devote a great deal of time and effort to their respective sports, but have always done so without the moral and financial support afforded to their male counterparts. We are now beginning to gain the recognition and financial assistance of the university community and Administration that we have earned. We have proved ourselves to be true athletes capable of personal and collective achieve- ment, requiring of ourselves greater concentration and refinement of our athletic skills and competitive spirit. But this is only the beginning, and our resources have only begun to be tapped. SPORTS SUMMARY VARSITY LACROSSE overall: 6-4 5 9 6 13 15 6 8 13 '- l 21 4 8 9 19 lvy. 4-2 Long Island Ath. COLLEGE e 196 The Coming Of Age Four years at Brown have been a learning experience for all seniors . . . learning that 1 50 others have signed up for your English Honors seminar, that it is impossible to find unbent silverware at the Ratty, that only God contrary to Paul Maeder's popular belief can make the grass grow. The bouquet of Cold Duck and the Evil Weed, the art of pennying someone in, and the anticipation of a three-day weekend became integral parts of our life style within our first semester. Brown has taught us alot about muddling through in happiness and adversity. How many of us have pulled all-nighters when, after downing a third pot of coffee, decided with our roommates that it would be more stimulating to switch assignments and finish each other's master- piece? Or the first night we discovered where the GCB was only to have forgotten by the morning not only where it was but how we got there? In this age of transition, we, too. have changed sub- stituting Lacoste for tie dye as our tastes matured. Brown has provided us with moments of monumental controversy as well. We have experienced the 2-minute showers 4 if you share with a friend, the great pay toilet hoax, the burning hot plate issue, the taste of Narragansett, and having your favorite Bogie film sold out five minutes before you get there, and we have survived. As we have turned from pacifist resistance to Kung Fu, have we better prepared ourselves for the post-baccalaureate world of Reality? We were noted for our pre-professional mentality, putting our noses to the grind if the stakes were high enough despite the temptations of the coffee lounge. We have logged more hours than any other class in the Sci Li, and we have the pre-meds to prove it. Undaunted by Watergate, this class shall pass through the Van Wickle gates only to discover that Chase Man- hattan and the Peace Corps are not hiring. Of course, the lure of professionalism has swayed many. Half of our senior year was spent filling out applications and the other half spent pacing the Post Office floor. And did those essays ever tax our creativity. Good luck to the future doctors who plan to cure cancer and to the aspiring F. Lee Baileys who propose to tantalize the courtrooms of America in four years. Yet seriousness about academic work never distracted us from our fun, be it torch races, the Spring Weekend version of Woodstock, or a free Oktoberfest, Ratty- style. We even ventured into the Providence community finding friendly rivals among the P.C. fans. Whether it was when you ran through the bus tunnel at 7 o'clock in the morning or took a late jaunt to Dunkin' Donuts or participated in an Awful Awful contest at Newport Creamery just to win a free one that you could not drink anyway because you were sick from the last three, you became aware of the mysteries of the world around you. The women of the Class of '75 certainly deserve a salute for their perseverance in the face of Wheaties, streakers, and Dr. Evrard. These hardy pioneers were the first to brave the labyrinths of West Quad adjusting to the hardships of hall hockey and the midnight stereo competitions. A bit of sympathy must be extended to every Brown woman who has had to explain a thousand times over that she does net go to Pembroke, has never gone to Pembroke, and does not even know what a parietal is! Rest in peace, Penny Pembroker! What will it be like, come August, not to receive a huge package of computer cards on which we must fill out the same information seven times? Will anything ever compare to an 8:30 a.m. class at Whitehall on a rainy day? Together we have stood, waiting to register, to buy books, to see a hockey game, to change courses for the umpteenth time, to get a room assignment, to get a GCB card, to see a dean, and finally to receive a diploma. And the class that stands together, stays together . . . just about forever. DAVID S. ABBEY AB Economics NINA ABDUNNABI AB Biology BAER M. ACKERMAN AB Religious Studies DONALD E.
