Especially in a community of Brown's dimensions and texture: where even nameless faces as- sume a comfortable familiarity. And so it goes, Byes odllery, ears music, mouth consumption and nose frustrations, and mundane daily activi- ty etc.. The ambiguity of our collective situa- tion surfaces somewhere between frus- trations and University Hall. Laboring in a vdcuum of political activism, puzzling over the waning vilality of the New Curriculum, pressured by pre-profes- sionalism and financial anxiety, we begin to wonder: What is the value of a college education? But, remember this book is not an issue-oriented docu- mentary highlighting the notable, vocif- erous, and committed participants. Rather, it is a mosaic of images. We hope you will recognize and identify with them. 16 23 44 64 82 136 148 160 166 192 D17 280 just folks sounds maximal consumption frats + fenton sports home sweet 4-year home frustrations a talk with Mr. Hornig normalacy + other alternatives academics seniors gilc, 16 17 18 20 SN R T R N SRR 0 SR il L . Usually the orchestras and choruses remain unno- ticed until perfectly practiced. Then they repossess Sayles Hall where every eye is as firmly rooted as those painted gazes. This is not much different from previous Brown students but the total numbers are really amazing. A recent survey shows that each student eals 8 pounds of food a day, nearly 56 pounds a week, 224 pounds a month, 1 ton 688 pounds a year, and thal s just in food starches and carbohydrates. 55 If it weren't for Brown, l seem to disremember that the Nar- ragansett Breweries would fold inside of a week. 1 have also dis- covered a curious facl: the number of beer cans on campus used to be inversely proportional to the number of those funny smelling homemade cigarettes, but not anymore. How many have never heard a Fenton story before? What you are about to hear are the most incredible collection of stories that you have ever heard in your life. You have NEVER heard anything like this before. These aren't funny stories; they're not sexy stories; they're not dirty stories. And they are also not fake. The stories you are about to hear are all true, every single one of them. Telling stories is a hobby of mine. What that means is basically I hear about these stories, see them on TV perhaps, read about them perhaps. When I see, hear, read or in some way find out about an amazing story I then check out every single fact in them, go to the places where they happened if practical, talk to the people concerned with them if possible, read the periodicals or books about them until I know that every single fact in every single story is true because 1 have personally checked it out. When I do, I then add it to the list of stories I tell. I have, end to end, about thirty stories like this, and I tell them at many places. Superbly I might add. There are some rules. If there's anybody here that can't live to the rules that's fine with me. You know, you can leave or I just won't tell them. It's all right. The rules are that you can't talk during the stories; you can't leave during a story; you can't ask questions while the story is going on; and of course, you can't laugh or in any way do stuff like that. If you do I just stop in the middle and that's the end. So if anybody can't live by those rules they can leave and that's the end. . . . These stories range far and wide. They're all kinds about all kinds of subjects. This particular one I will tell you now is indica- tive of the type of amazing story and amazing facts that involve backed up with the proof that I have checked on and that you yourself anytime can check up on. With that, one of the stories begins. Several years ago, a young woman awoke in London . . . 75 76 PHI KAPPA PSI 7 78 i, A PHI DELTA BETA 80 DELTA TAU H -m- T . 1 R, o 81 8 83 BROWN UNIVERSITY PERMITS AREA 84 85 8 b h' bt i i 87 88 g m,, m Q N : 90 R o Y Sk 91 o h, 'lll ! 118 i i,mw - n - ff; ? Well, I have taken Engin 6. . . Then here. Let's see . . . an announce- ment about a meeting of Gay Lib. You finally got on their mailing list. You can have that one. What's in the package? This month's assortment of condoms. Why should you care, or have you changed your style since last semes- ter? I was never very much for checkered prophalactics. . . Here's last month's Newsweek, this week's overdue notice on a book I returned last semester, and you have a card telling you to pick up a pack- age. Holy shit, I have to be at an East Campus class in two minutes . . . Wait, you have my card please? Here Hey Henry! Did you see that funny shaped box of cookies? Never mind, they're under the set of Littorina encyclopedias. How could you put a box of cookies for tomorrow's paper? Just a moment please 151 AAALRRRR GrRRAR 52 Due to the high cost of food items, all servings must be made in standardized portions. THANK YOU FOR YOUR COOPERATION, CLICK! Pause CLICK! Hello, can I help you? Yes, I'd like to put a notice in tomorrow morning's BDH. I'm sorry, it's too late to put one in for tomorrow. But it was supposed to be in today's paper. I brought it over a week ago. Humm. It should be around here. CLICK! Pause CLICK! I've found it, but it's handwritten. So? We can't take handwritten notices. I can tell you what it's supposed to say. We can't take them over the telephone. Why not? Hold on, I'll let you speak to the Managing Editor. CLICK! Pause CLICK! Hello. Yes, was trying to put in a notice . . . Well, we need one copy for each day you want it to run. It has to be typed, triple spaced on a full sized sheet of paper with the date you want it to run on the top. It also must be brief with the first three words capitalized. We need it at least two days before the publication date and it can only be run three times. Do you prefer a certain color paper???2? No preference. Just don't make it onion skin. Why not? How the hell should I know why I haven't been getting the Herald? Are you sure people haven't been rip- ping it off from your dorm? I get it in my mailbox. Then you are getting your paper! No! I'm supposed to get it in my mailbox. Okay, what's your number. 987. 987. pause Hey is this Walter? Sure is. Jane? Yea! But I have an ID. But you need one for each ticket you buy. But my roommate and I have our girl- friends coming down from Wheaton . . I'm sorry but we can only give you standardized portions. Can't I have two hamburger patties? I'm sorry, but that's not a standard- ized portion. But the hamburgers are only half as thick as they were last year! I'm sorry, but we can only give you standardized portions. Even if the servings are half as large? Why don't you take your complaint to a student member of the university dining committee? I am a member of the university din- ing committee. Then, why don't you talk to Mr. Cleave- : land? Who? What do you know about bathtowels? You haven't touched one in weeks. I'm going to get something else. It's going to be a tough choice: beef pinwheels glazed with pineapple sauce or curried shrimp stuffed with corned beef hash and topped with honey and ketchup? I'll find something. Don't take your plate up. What am I going to put my food in? It has something on it, and if you leave anything on it, you don't get seconds. But I don't want seconds, 1 want firsts. Good luck. But the steak's inedible! I 153 Nonsense! The University offers its students the best possible meals at the lowest possible prices and with negotiotions on the library situa- tion due to resume on Friday, the President will not be meeting with students while we are bargaining in good faith. Mr. Hornig, do you know that some library employees earn so little that they receive welfare? 1 don't know the details. How much do you live on now? None of your business. How much money is spent on public relations? How much money was spent on Patriots Court? How much money is spent on university negotiator Michael Brown s salary? None of your business. An issue which a majority of the faculty has always supported the president on is that salaries of individuals are not discussed. But we pay our money for these things . . . That's right you're not going to pass next week's test. Why not? I passed the first two . . . I realize that, but you're not going to pass this one. You want me out of the course. Is that it? DOV EOF: file Ro TE0 D030 I 5726 S 56 159 160 47, 44, 161 162 As seniors, we have been at Brown as long as you yourself have been. In these 4 years we have recognized changes in ourselves, stepping stones in the process of maturation. Have you felt any strong personal changes in yourself during the past 4 years? Well, you may have looked forward to maturing. When you get to be my age, you rather regret it. I guess I've relaxed considerably in the course of 4 years. I've learned that all of the problems of the university are just a bit harder and more complex than I thought they were when I came. l was very ambitious to achieve quite a lot in a hurry. One could imagine that after a little bit of consulting everyone would agree with you, and do all sorts of great things in unison. The first stage of maturation was to discover that the university is composed as it ought to be of very strong-minded individuals, both famong the students and on the faculty, and that they're not that easily persuaded as to how they want to go. At times this gets very frustrating. I think that as I've gone along the biggest thing l've learned has been to respect all the people in this process. You asked me whether I had any strong personal changes: of course, the biggest one I had was a heart attack. When you came to Brown University, whal kind of relationship did you expect to be able to develop between the students and yourself? I don't suppose that I defined that very precisely. What I'd hoped for was 1o be able 10 develop a kind of dialogue with students in which there would be mutual respect, mutual confidence, a considerable degree of candor, and in which there would be a fairly honest interchange. Perhaps students, in some respects, dont think I've played my part 've been a little bit disappointed at the extent to which students have not been entirely open in our discussions. The things people say aren't always the same in different forums. The things they say to me are often really political positions rather than straightforward statements. Of course, I suppose I do this somewhat, too, but I find that the things they tell me aren't quite the same things that they say to each other or to the outside world. Everyone is engaged in a certain amount of role playing. What do you think in retrospect that the student body expected of you as president? Asking what that thing called the student body thinks or what it expected is like asking what 500 faculty members think. I don't know. I have the impression, though, that when I came here each part of the body of students expected me to be a knight in shining armor leading the charge on behalf of whatever their cause was: whether a film study program, for which no one had been able to find the money thus far, or a better football team, or you name it. I'm sure they had the dream that when a new president comes we're all going to settle down and be a family, very closely knit. We'll all get to know him. When I want to go in and chat with him, he'll be there to talk with me, presumably to answer all my questions, which is something I can't even do for my own children. I have to admit that when I came to Brown, I'd been away from students for a while. Originally, my intention had been to make my career in the university. From 1946 to 1964 1 did. I had gotten to know Brown well in that period. From 1964 to 1970, when lots of things were happening, I was away from students, so my expectations were tied to a considerable extent to what I perceived through the eyes for instance of my children. At all times I had one in college and one about to enter, but the fact that there were six years without any immediate contact with students did affect my thinking. One of the things I expected most was the stimulation of seeing the world through the eyes of people who still had everything ahead of them. Maybe it has nothing to do with being president, but it is, I think, one of the greatest joys of coming to a university; and it's one that's been, by and large, realized. Do these student expectations and input affect any major decision-making? To put it succinctly, I'd say that there are several classes of problems. In everything related to what governs the circumstances of student life while they're here as students, students ought to have an absolutely major input and say. In regard to things mainly involving long range policies, students are listened to very carefully, but for the quality of the ideas they express and the fact that they say it from a different vantage point than the other people who advise, but they aren't entitled to any special consideration because they're students. And finally, there are some kinds of questions, such as investment decisions, into which there is usually very little student input. So there is a complete range. Now, Id say that in any case that belongs in the first category, we have tried to listen to students as much as we could. How has it affected things? Let me cite some examples. I don't think thatthe music demonstration affected our thinking about the problem, which had been to look as hard as we could for funds for pianos and praclice rooms. However, it happened to be a good example of practical action by the students because the attention that was drawn to that problem resulted in people giving us money. Size is an overworked problem. You know the problem of size is really very simple. The bigger a university gets, the greater the variety of programs it can offer. It stands to reason that if you add two professors in history you can give four more history courses. And so on. I'd say the argument for getting bigger is that it makes more diversity in what can be offered possible; and the argument against it is very simple, too: the sense of community decreases. The bigger you get the harder it is for everyone to know each other. We will have a debate, I'll bet, as long as this university exists, on what the right balance is. In that kind of debate, student views are very much heard. Finally, overcrowding: obviously students were listened to. The heart of that matter was a short term thing, if you're thinking particularly of the fall of 1972. Surely no one in his right mind would ever have adopted that as a permanent model for the university, but remember our plans had originally been made on the assumption that we would have a new dormitory on a parking lot. But we still have a very fine parking lot and no dormitory. What it adds up to is this: student views, when they're well thought out, when they're well stated, have accomplished important things. What is your attitude toward the campus feeling that your administration is unapproachable and treats students as extraneous? Would you consider more personal contacts with students in general on a more frequent basis? You know, it's hard to take that question seriously. The students, as far as know, are what this place is about to everyone in University Hall. There are only 168 hours in a week. For myself, see students in lots of ways, and don't know how I could see them much more. In part, I try to see what students are doing and see students with each other in such things as conferences, plays, athletic events, lectures, etc. We occasionally have meetings in dorm lounges. I'm not a great believer in very formal things. I've gotten more, in many cases, from people who have dropped in alongside with me in my daily walk back and forth to tell me about one thing or another. In many cases, this is more revealing that 20 or 30 people asking the same old questions over and over again. The temptation to role play with a larger group is very great. I've had people in trouble drop in and see me here on Saturday mornings. I've gone along with people to see Charlie Baldwin. I've had people call me at home I don't know of anyone who's ever been turned away. I suspect what I'm saying applies to most of the members of the administration. So, if you can find me some more time or help me to organize my time better, of course I'd consider more personal contacts, but I try to accept all the invitations I can. There are 6500 students who would like to be seeing us; there are 500 faculty members; there are also quite a lot of parents who think they ought to be able to get in on our time. There's also the plain ordinary business of the university to transact. I just can't believe that you'd really mean that the students are regarded as extraneous. I've taught at Harvard, Princeton, Cal Tech, UCLA, Rochester at various times I've never seen a place where the administration has paid as much attention to the undergraduates or worried as much about the undergraduate curriculum and the circumstances of undergraduate life. Still, there's a lot to be improved on, I'm sure. I think you're right that there's a problem, but I'm not sure what the answer is. As president of a university, your approach to your job must be threefold because you're dealing with a body in three vital, functionally different parts: the corporation, the faculty, and the students. How do you view the relationships between these three? What do you find to be the basic conflicts? Let me turn this question around. I think there may be conflicts, but they aren't basic conflicts. The university has several kinds of responsibilities Its first is to educate students, in several different ways. One is general and pre-professional education: this is what we mean by undergraduate education. Then there is graduate education which is professional education done within the university. Next, the university has a real and important obligation to society, not only to train people to do things better ten years from now than we've managed to now, but also to generate some of the understanding, some of the new knowledge that'll make the world a little better to live in. Finally, there's also a responsibility to all the people who have invested their labor and their love and their gifts in the university. What is the relation between students, faculty and corporation? Students are here, in the broad sense, to learn and to mature. Faculty members are here, I think, for a variety of reasons: they're here partly because they enjoy students and they love to teach. They're here partly because this is an environment which they find intellectually stimulating, in which they can develop themselves, and in which they can make a contribution to solving some of the problems of the world by adding something of their own. The members of the corporation not only represent the interest of all the people who have contributed to the university, but legally speaking they are the university. The basic responsibility of the corporation is to the long range functioning of the university and the wise use of its resources; the corporation doesn't get involved in how we teach or how we do things internally. There's an obvious conflict for faculty time, just as there is for my time. You all want faculty members who are distinguished scholars, who can tell you something more than you can read in every textbook. On the other hand, students also like faculty to spend more time with students. There is the problem of striking a balance of effort and time. The basic conflicts to the extent that they exist come in how you divide up people's time. I've never thought of any one of the three parts being against the others. At Brown, more than at any other place I've known, the parts all are equally loyal to the institution and to what it's trying to do. They try to pull pretty well together. I hope you feel that way after four years here. I came back because I love Brown even at a very difficult time. Even despite Providence? Well, you know Providence has I was away for some 13 years Providence has improved enormously. I rather like it. The Benefit Street area, for example, was terribly run-down and now it's largely been spruced up. In 1957 there was no Rt. 95 or 195; Providence was widely regarded as the principal obstacle between New York and Boston or between anywhere and the Cape. That's because all the roads wound through narrow back streets and created great traffic jams. Do you think Brown is different place now than it was four years ago? Ill give a qualified answer as I do to everything: yes and no. I don't think Brown was a lot different in 1970 than it had been in 1957. I think that the great reform of 1969 occurred because Brown was Brown and a place likely to spawn Maxwells and Magaziners and people thinking like that. Brown has a very special style and ambiance. That has remained through these four years. Surely things have changed quite a lot. All during the spring of 1970 when I was getting ready to come here, there was news, exciting or terrifying or whatever from the campus. I came here in June, and the strike was in full swing. It was sort of messianic; it was like a great revival meeting. That first fall I don't know how you found it as freshmen but arrived here in September and I thought that the New Curriculum was one of the very exciting things about Brown. I also found a group of really passionate people who looked on it as a rigid idea and whose approach to it wasn't How do we continue to develop undergraduate education? but rather, Now that you've come here, Mr. President, what are you going to do to finish implementing the New Curriculum? ' Furthermore, we both arrived at the end of a period of a particular kind of activism, including a certain amount that I didn't admire: a kind of intolerance and a kind of unwillingness to listen to dissent from its own particular kind of righteousness that I thought was quite incompatible with my idea of a university. But now activism has vanished from the scene to the extent that I have sometimes worried if I shouldnt do something to stir things up a little. That reminds me that one of my first encounters with the press was in 1954 when I was dean of the graduate school. Those were still the days when there was a weekly convocation which all students had to attend, at which either President Wriston or a dean or 163 164 a faculty member talked. Things were pretty quiet so I gave a talk pleading for just a little radicalism. And the result was that the Providence Journal came out the next day with the headline Dean Pleads for Radicalism. I had to answer questions for lots of alumni. There have been times that I've been tempted to repeat that performance. I believe that the university has become more serious, more thoughtful about what it wants for itself and for the world. My impression is that everyone here has become aware that both our own problems and the world's problems are more complicated than we thought four years ago, which is fine so long as everyone doesn't start thinking they're so complicated that they can't be dealt with. I do have very much the feeling that the surface calm is papering over more unease than perhaps I recognize. It's very hard to answer that question. Educationally I think we've gone through the cycle of simply saying, Have we implemented this thing called the New Curriculum? People are asking the basic questions all over again. They are asking, What is it expect from Brown? What is the university trying to do and what should it be trying to do? Physically the university has changed too. We've got a new pool which really is, I think, as good as any in the country. Since you came, the List building has made a fine addition to the place. Brown keeps on evolving. The merger of Brown and Pembroke and the formation of the MD program are surely going to go down in future histories of the university as important events. I suspect your four years will have seen two of the major events of Brown's history. Is there any way to alleviate the obvious town- gown controversies around here? I dont know of any place where there aren't town-gown problems. The simple fact is that students be it in the middle ages or now are strangers who move in and take over a. piece of somebody's town, and it seems to me, everything else in some sense springs from this. You import 5000 strangers and put them down in the middle of Providence. In lots of ways they don't see life the way the people of Providence do, and the people of Providence don't see life the way they do. I suspect there never will be any completely happy accommodation for that reason. On the other hand, there's nothing better that could have happened to Providence than to have Brown located in the middle of it. In a whole variety of ways it's what keeps the place alive. What do you see as Brown's weak points and its strong points? Its weakest point is that it hasn't enough endowment. That's a simple answer. Next, wish we could agree a little more than we have on just what it is we want to be. In 1969 the faculty explicitly refused to back any statement of philosophy in regard to the New Curriculum. How to put the curriculum into effect could be agreed upon but a statement of philosophy could not. Just in the past few months, the Committee on Baccalaureate Degree Requirements tried to make a simple statement of philosophy and it too has gotten chewed up in discussion. Nevertheless, there is a sense of what we are. It is a weakness that we haven't been able to evolve a good system for defining our objectives as clearly as we'd like. I think that we can and will improve the counseling system for undergraduates; I think that we can and will must have more ways by which every undergraduate can get to know at least two or three faculty members well enough so they feel they can provide good references. I think that the Brown faculty pays more serious attention to its undergraduates than at any place with which I have ever been associated, but there's lots of room for improvement. Brown's strong points: some are obvious. We have a first class student body and an interesting student body. We have a first class faculty and an interesting faculty. I'd say that Brown's strongest point is a very particular style. There is more sense of community both between students and faculty and among the various parts of the faculty, and more sense of identity than any place with which I've been associated. This, I think, is the strongest asset. Brown has two other very strong assets. One is a general tradition of quality; that never solves problems, but it always helps. The other is a tradition of adventurousness. Brown has always operated relatively on a shoestring, but nevertheless, it has done very well for a long time. What kinds of changes do you foresee for Brown in the near future or in the distant future for that matter? The problem of getting close relations between a scholarly faculty and a student body is a neverending one. I think we'll continue to work on the questions of the curriculum, toward a more challenging interaction between students and faculty, toward improving the counseling and guidance systems. The business of being a prophet has never been a very rewarding one, and the success record isn't very good. What I see for the near term is a continuing effort on everything related to a Brown education, but nothing very dramatic in prospect. In the long term, I think the biggest single problem is to try to evolve a sufficiently agreed-on educational philosophy so that it can be expected to motivate everybody. I think we'll make progress on that; 1 don't think we'll ever have an answer. In the longer pull, I think the evolution of Brown will have to reflect the evolution of the society it's in. No, I won't make any long term predictions, other than that I think Brown has been adventurous enough and interesting enough and we have enough internal vitality so that I suspect Brown is going to stay pretty much in the center of the stage as it goes along, but I won't tell you what the play is going to be. Thank you very much, Mr. Hornig. 165 166 The days of student activism are memories now. Strike -shirts are collector s items, packed away in moth balls. Modes of Thought courses are passing into oblivion with little more than an occasional whimper. The campus is quiet except for the sounds of beer kegs rolling through Wriston Quad on Friday afternoons. Cambodia! God we can hardly remember it. The new curriculum? That's why we came to Brown! Bonhoffer The odd question of what education is fundamentally all about mysteriously oozes into our heads as the grind of papers and the turmoil of exams thrusts us into an academic pressure cooker seemingly not of our own making. We are caught, scared, zealous, beaten, driven, lazy, apathetic, opulent, crazed, and almost happy. Pushed by other-directed high schools, parents, and a half dozen other well-meaning demons, we find college something of a disappointment; a challenge only if we make it such, Those vague and uncontrollable inklings of our true selves are somehow evident yet somehow obsure in our Quixotic attempt to become educated.' Lots of people study at Brown. Yet how many learn? Some ask. Few answer. An aura of apathy and hedonism, nourished by those ever present Brown Bs re- echo our limitedness. In somewhat individualized ways we grapple with these absurdities: some leave for a while, some become like children again, discovering that education is essentially growth and excitement. Ultimately, as seniors we become like so many foolishly wise lemmings and dash madly into the ocean of professionalism. Some others dare to follow those obscurer paths of insecurily by bracing the world unshielded by the comfort that being a student has so long provided them with. Yet we all walk on, some a little wiser, all a lot less certain. 197 198 And the wise fools with their false matu- rity proclaim, 'The New Curriculum is dead. It was based on naive assump- tions, they say. Naive assumptions such as the notion that the student and his development is the fulcrum of the edu- cational endeavor. Naive assumptions such that with reordered priorities the faculty would devole a larger portion of their time to the education of under- graduates. We all believed that students viewed college as an end in itself: as fundamentally a search, aesthetically pleasing and profoundly enriching. We all believed that knowledge is not pigeon-holed: that it is more intricate and intertwined than our organization disciplined mind could imagine. I thought that grades were absurd, irratio- nal, frustrating, fruitless, inane, and 5kin- nerian. though that a good job after college was not measured in dollars and cents or by the spiffiness of the initials M.D., J.D., or Ph.D. And we all went to high school. And we all haled diarrhe: education: shove it all in, only to flush i all out. And we all went to high school And we all needed so much more. And there is something funny abou these supposed naive' assumptions the student initiative, the conlinuing self-examination, the stress on interdis ciplinary endeavors. They are not naive but bold. They place, indeed the challenge, the individual to take respon sibility for his education. You mus awake. You must grow. You mus challenge. The demise of educationa reform is hardly the result of naivete, bu of cowardice. It is the result of student who study, but do not learn. It is the result of professors who only profess. I is the result of liberals who liberalize but do not liberate. It seems that educa tional ideals are only as futile or as naiv as the student who seeks to be eithe lazy or blind. 159 I give honours and high marks to those whom 1 like, and whatever I happen to think of to the others. Why, what are marks for, anyway, if they are not to be used as a token of esteem? Scholarship has nothing to do with it. If a man gets a good education that is reward enough in itself. - Liber, 1890 202 ?: 203 204 205 206 207 MISS REARDON HOUSE OF ATREUS 208 BEGGARS' OPERA 209 210 11 ST RIS 248 . ammen s C s, ZR s iR T A AT R SR SRR SRR C e o 1 AR 3 et A N T o , S S ; : ,1 215 216 e ' ! r i ;, T N MILTON B.
