Many are extensions of academic interests; others go beyond academic studies into the arts, publications, government, and service. They are important to the University for their programs and to the individual for the diversification of his experiences. So we have What is Man? ' and the Latin Carol Service; John Barth and Dick Gregory; Henry V and Pal Joey''; the BDH and WBRU. The Brown Band rallies athletic enthusiasm while Res Publica'' considers political trends. As the Bruin Club promotes Brown, Alpha Phi Omega organizes a blood drive and the Brown Jug compiles local humor. They are a part of the entertainment, the education, the communication, and the service that enhance the quality of the Community. The engineer becomes an editor and the biologist plays the lead in a play in order to broaden their interests or to escape academics. The individual joins the German Club, the Classics Club, or the Brown Engineering Societybringing his studies out of the classroom into the less formal and more personal atmosphere of a student group. Others relax and socialize by participation in chess, outings, or bridge; respond to personal responsibility to the community through CAC, BYG, or Meiklejohn; and explore their religion through Hillel, UCM, or CSO. Whether by membership in one or many groupsto escape, to round out, or to diversifythe Brown student does participate in a wide range of activities. Whatever the organization, each individual brings to it his own interests and abilities. Problems do exist to complicate his effortsdramatics faces obsolete facilities; musical groups, inadequate space; and others, insufficient funds. Yet there is a vitality and commitment among members of all groups that enables them to develop good, and often exciting, programs.
