Coffee becomes a synonym for talk. Tastes vary; nightly teams invade the lvy Room, while Pembrokers and their dates seek the less rowdy air of the Gate. Machine City draws impoverished freshmen and late studiers; Lloyd's draws the Art and Linguistics Departments; Frank at UD draws his own crowd; everybody visits the Blue Room. Then there is searchinganticipation and bravado and letdown on many a Friday night as carloads head for Wheaton or Wellesley or Wherever; or on many a Saturday night as crowds mill around Thayer Street. Or any timea few minutes after class or in the library or at a table in Faunce House Lobby. So then there is Saturday. They are everywhere, all different. Maybe a walk up the street to Pembrokemaybe trying to spot her in the crush on the station platform on the basis of month-old mixer memories and a two-year-old pigbook picturemaybe the challenge of the Streetmaybe an empty wallet, and the Faunce House Flicks or a study date or a stag bashmayhe the whole bit with football game and cocktail party and dinner and noisy evening partymaybe Sock and Buskin or Trinity Square or Bostonmaybe Newport or the Capemaybe creeping up the Hill on a big weekend at four a.m. And there is spare time. It may be scarce, but academics are not everything. Fraternities and dormitories may organize itintramurals, Homecoming projects, and community service days. The University may regulate itparietal rules and party formalities. But its essence is unorganized and disorganized. Everyone must know the feeling of being reluctantly sucked into a bull session or a Manny's team. Brown Social life iswhat? Spring Weekend, but Christmas Formal. The punt room show, but 3 a.m. bull sessions. The Andrews Terrace, but study dates. Places and occasions and contrasts and people.
