FACULTY APPOINTED to the Brown faculty in 1923, Professor Robert Hudson George is the Munro, Goodwin, Wilkinson Professor of History. Being one of the bulwarks of the ac- ademic community, he has most often been known for his lectures in European history. He is known lor his clear and precise presentation with a dash of appropriate wit. It 1is with regret that this publication records his retirement at the end of the current academic year. I EITHER lecturing before a class of 150 or umpiring a seminar of twelve undergraduates, Pro- fessor George Elliot Downing stresses in his modern art courses that we cannot evaluate major questions into either . . . or statements. That 1s, since both science and the humanities describe the world, it 1s an over- simplification to divide issues categorically; total reality must include both science and art. A member of the Brown com- munity since 1932, he chairmans the Art Department, which has ceaselessly fought for new ideas in Brown architecture rather than Georgian conformity.

PUBLISH OR PERISH is the accepted maxim set forth by the Administration. This aphorism, applicable at nearly every college in the country, leads the faculty to conduct basic research, both in the sciences and the arts. Dr. William Montagna, of the Biology Department, has discovered much about the phisiological construction of cutaneous structures and eccine glands; Dr. Herman B. Chase is doing research on the effects of radio-active fall- out on human inheritance. Research in the arts is high- lighted by Professor Elmer Blistein, who, having made a study of comedy, is writing a book on that subject due for publication later this year.

REFERRED to as onec of the ten most promising young com- posers in the United States to- day, 1s Professor Ron Nelson, Associate Professor of Music at Brown. Constantly is he at work providing new material for the 1 usical urganizations on CZUHPUS. One of his best known works 1s the recently published Christ- mas Story, which was per- formed throughout the country last Christmas. i 14 A RARE scientist is Professor George W. Morgan, Associate Profes- sor of Applied Mathematics. Opposed o the narrow, mechanistic view of many men of science, Dr. Moroan stresses human values: in his con vocation lecture to the Junior class he warned of the dangers inherent in relying solely on factual and empitical knowledge. Prolessor Mor- gan's vast range of tlnnkmg 15 i.lenmnstrated by his being chosen as one of the first to lead a University Gourse, designed to show students the interrelation of science, history, and the arts.
