RESEARCH THE CASUAL REMARK, dropped by a professor who must remain nameless, that Brown would be a wonderful institution were it not for the classes was made tongue-in-cheek. However, it does underline the fact that teaching is only one hall of the professor's job, the remaining hall being research and writing. This delving into unknown fields is most noticeable in the sciences; in physics, chemisiiy, and biology, vast research projects are always underway. T'he Psychology Department, recently moved into modern Hunter Laboratory, has long been the mainstay for theoretical psychology in the East. At present, Dr. Trygg Engan, on a grant from the National Science Foundation, is making a study of little known olfactory stimuli in an attempt to classity them. Psychophysical methods are used in the problem of specilying a sense ol odors by quality and intensity.

LEARNED men also spoke at the newly created class convocations. This bi-weekly meeting replaced compulsory chapel when construction of the Manning Chapel was completed. Since there was a place for worship available, convocation was in- stituted. Speakers included President Keeney, Dean Warts, and other members of the faculty and administration; Rev- erend Gustave Weigal promoted the ecuminical movement and Sevellon Brown, editor of the Providence Journal and husband of Professor Janice Van De Water, discussed his trip to Russia. In the political sphere, Arthur Schlessinger, Jr. came from Harvard to give students a glimpse of liberal demociatic philos ophy. Meanwhile, at neighboring Provi- dence College, conservative William Buckley supported the Loyalty Oath in government scholarships, something which was opposed on the East Side of town.

PUBLISH OR PERISH is the accepted maxim set forth by the Administration. This aphorism, applicable at nearly every college in the country, leads the faculty to conduct basic research, both in the sciences and the arts. Dr. William Montagna, of the Biology Department, has discovered much about the phisiological construction of cutaneous structures and eccine glands; Dr. Herman B. Chase is doing research on the effects of radio-active fall- out on human inheritance. Research in the arts is high- lighted by Professor Elmer Blistein, who, having made a study of comedy, is writing a book on that subject due for publication later this year.
