COFFEE-RHINEWINE-OR-SHERRY i5s the familiar greeting from DProfessor Elmer Blistein at his Wednesday evening open houses. These open houses, where students, weary from studying, can chat casually and obtain a few pearls of wisdom, give the Brown man a chance to meet his teachers outside the classroom. Associate professor of English, Resident Fellow, and advisor to the freshman football tcam, Mr. Blistein is easily accessible around the campus. Professor I eslie Jones of the English Department can be found almost any time backstage of the theater. Technical director of dramatics, in charge of lighting, directions. and equipment, the Professor is shown below in his working clothes.

IN THE SPRING a young man's fancy turns to the pleasant prospect of outdoor classes on the green. Until this warm season, infor- mal classes are limited to small sessions meet- ing at the instructor's house; informal get- togethers with the faculty are restricted to chats in the office or, perhaps, over a cup of coffee.

LECTURERS LEARNING can be obtained by the interested student who bestirs himself to attend some of the many lectures given on campus. The Marshall Woods series featured such speakers as Henri Peyre of Yale and Hugh McLain of Chicago University discussing trends in con- temporary literatie. These lec tures, which filled Alumnae Hall each of the six times they were presented, demonstrate the fact that education is something which can- not be confined solely to the class- room. The Resident Fellows spon- sored Discussions 59 in which distinguished members of the fac- ulty argued problems of modern life such as the quiz show scandals and the mixing of religious issues with politics. There were a great many other lecturers on varied topics. Professor Lea Williams of the Political Science Department spoke on the reality of the tourist as the Ugly American, while foreign students now at Brown de- bated this problem. There was a handwriting expert who said that his letters tell tales, and Theo- dore Besterman, Director of the Institut Voltaire, discussed the re- lation of Voltaire's letters to his personality. e e
