FRESHMAN CLASS When the Class of 1954 entered Brown University this fall, some 675 men from schools in 29 states and the District of Columbia and 7 foreign countries were united in one interest, that of class spirit. Throughout the hectic Freshman Week they took exams and physicals, met the athletic coaches, were introduced to student activities, and learned the songs that Brown men sing. The little brown beanie soon became the identifying mark of a comrade, and friendships were quickly formed. Added to this group was Marcus Aurelius, who also sported a fresh- man beanie for several days. The Brown-Pembroke Freshman Dance opened new horizons for the new- est Brown men. Well managed hazing by the Vigilance Commit- tee fostered the growth of a strong class spirit which was manifested in vigorous opposition to early morn- ing raids on freshman strongholds. To further halt their oppression, an ingenious group of freshmen temporarily removed the handle from the infamous pump before Hope College. The climactic test came during the Homecoming Weekend when the freshmen stormed ASHBYDEAN, president ROBERTGLASS, vice-presiden '54 mudders triumph. through a sea of mud and sophomores to win the traditional Flag Rush. By late October the class was ready for official organization, and after a brief campaign period, freshman officers were elected. LAURANCEGOOD, secretary EDWARDCASTLEBERRY, treasurer

Also serving the class were Robert Glass, vice-president; Laurance Good, secretary; and Paul Greeley, treasurer. Soon after this the '54 Class Council was organ- ized. Its first positive action was the circulation of a petition urging the Cammarian Club to recommend to the administration the continuance of sophomore car privileges, which were to be suspended in the Activities night confusion. Fall of 1951. The petition was successfully presented to the Cammarian Club, and the recommendation was forwarded to the administration. At about this time the freshman newspaper was organized, and a beer party was planned. The largest project of the year was the mid-winter class dance presented in cooperation with the Sophomore Coun- el During the past year members of the Class of '54 distinguished themselves in student activities, sports, and scholarship. Their strong spirit and energetic activity forecast the continued excellence of Brown spirit and traditien.
