WOODWARD BLOCHER Business Manager 1946 LIBER BRUNENSIS To the FUTURE of BROWI The Great Libersl Precepts represented in the Charter and Traditions of Brown are principles we call American. Through them our Nation and our University have grown great, We dedi- cate this book in the larger sense to the perpetu- ation of these principles, in the particular hope that they may continue to find expression in the Spirit of our Alma Mater. The CLASS of 46 HEN the 1946 Liber Brunensis first began to take shape, we reslized that o ceparture from the usual was necessary in freating the class section. In peace- time years an individual photograph of each man was included along with his write.up, but this is impractica of the present time since so many men in 46 are no lonaer on the campus. Although such photographs are absent from the following pages, we have attemptied to include as complete a summary of each man s activities at Brown a5 wat poss ble with existing infarmation and meny informal snopshots of those in the class, This year s class section includes lists of those who enfered Brown as civilians in the class of 46 and those who were transferred nto the closs by the Neavy Meany men enter. g as civiians were later absorbed into the Naval program, Individual write up: of men in the service note the branch of service but not the rank, as the latter is confinuously changing and information could not be up to dote. The spring season ended with a sound trounc: ing by nigh flying Yale and a win and a loss with Holy Cross. The siummer half of the season folund Mcleil and Hornvak fliing the spots va. cated by Kern and Goldstein at short and center. Stephenson moved off the mound o handie third base as Lapides restec an injured leg by taking over first. This prac- Heally new team started with a bad slump, l0sinia five in a row. The First of these five was the rubber game with Holy Cross in which Dick Tracy turned in s fine relief job for seven innings, but o no avail. The re- covery from this slimp was the team s out- standing performance of the vear. This was the 3.7 victory over Yale, whose pifch. er. Macha, was the outstanding twirler in eastern intercollegiate competition. Teaming fine fielding with timely hitting and some brilliant pitching by Ed Nelson, the Bruins had sweet revenge for their ear. lior loss. A defeat by Camp Thomas three days later had redeeming features in the form of heavy hitting by Shepherd and Hornyak and some accurale sniping by catcher Bach. Afer another beating by Boston Ceast Guard which featured the hitting of Hap Greenhalgh, the Brown nine finally conguered the service team jint by taking Cluoncet 1 5 The loss 1o Melville o week later was doiLbly disappointing in that rifle armed catcher Johnny Bach broke a finger on his throwing hand.
