My limbs are weak, my head thro' toil Ilas grown to an unwonted size, For they have been cold wisdonfs spoil The victims of a craze for prize. Yes-History, Philosophy, Science, the Lit. of Germany, The law of Rome and Romans stoie Those anti-types of Gods heroic. .And then that mass of idiocy As taught at Brown, Geology- 4 These thorns have pricked my 'bleeding side, These lnu'dens, have crushed down my pride. The light side and the dark are rife 4 4 And make in turn true college life, h h So knowing this, don't think T grieve At all the hardships I 1'0CCP'C, , I laugh in my scholastic sleeve. For while a Senior swears his books Take all his time, still woman's looks Ar'nt strangers quite. They play4their parts In making love and breaking hearts,'Y So goes the saw of College glee Containing truth with poetry. Witli joy is mingled much of pain To think as students ne'er again At dear old Brown our toasts we'll'drain With comrades bound by friendship's chain. May Alma Mater, dear old IIive At greater glory still arrive. ' I'll :fondly think how e'er she thrive 'Twas duo, yes all, to Eighty-five. 25 Resident Sfrazduate. Fn.xN1i HOWARD ANDREWS, A. But the Elders of this sect taught with much power, and the fame of their greatness of head spread throughout all the land, even to the tribe of Pawtuek, and many disciples came unto them, and for these did Ihey make laws and twice during each year did they examine them. And, lo! the time drew near which the Scribes and the Doctors had appointed for the examination, and great was the fear that fell on many, for they knew that they were wanting. 'But some were wise and some were foolish. They that were foolish toiled not, neither did they spin, but spent their time in feasting and riotous livin gg nor made they any preparation for the future. Then did the chief of the Doctores envelop his countenance in the sleeve of his garment and laugh. But they that were wise swathed their heads in napkins moistened with water, and toiled early and even when the hour was late, and made unto themselves scrolls of delicate workmanship, whereon they inscribed the laws of the Fathers. But the day came when it was appointed to hold the examination, and a great cry arose over all the landg and allvthe masculine Virgins arose and girded up their loins, and gathered themselves together in the lower porch of the Synagogue. V Tolly Gr-an.-I am so very young that I have to tell every one that I am really in college, and a Sophomore, toog but it is not my fault that I have been subjected to the Hot Bed process, and so am correspondingly insipid. Sh-rm-n, '8'7.-I have only been at Brown a little while. I came expecting at least to take a post-graduate course, but the Doctor decided that the Sophomore class was about my size. We take great pleasure in presenting to our readers this galaxy of celebrities They are products of our special artist, and are here presented at an immense expense. But the undoubted extra sale which this page alone will insure to the LIBER will, we are confident, verify the wisdom of our venture. We sincerely trust that the thus distinguished gentlemen will not be made vain by these Hatter- ing likenesses. , No. 1. WHIPPLE POTTER JENKS, A. M. The existence of this gentleman is regarded by many as lnlrriliy mythical, but we take this oppo1'tunity to correct this most glaring error. J. . P. JENKs, A. M., is a living, breathing reality, and, as the catalogue clearly and cogently states, Professor of glricultura Zoology and Curator of the Museum, which, being translated, means nstructor to those on state scholarships who desire to become third-rate farmers, and also Label Sticker in the Museum. The teclmical knowledge of this gentleman is most marvellous. If a shell is presented to him, he can tell immediately whether it is that of an oyster or clamg and this is all the more wonderful as Prof. J1aNKs is not a Rhode Islander. --No. 2. C. HILL, DENVER, COL. This gentleman, known to his friends as Croft, is so well known and our artist has so faithfully tpcrhaps too iiatteringlyi delineated ,his features, that a few words only will be expected from the critical pen of the Lrnan. His early youth was passed asa cow-boy in Colorado. The wild and eccentric manners acquired while there he has never been able to free himself from, though constantly and closely associated with the most relined and cultured men of the college. Our artist has powerfully brought out thc soft lines about the mouth, which have led so many people to speak of his likeness to Jesse James. During his college course he has held several positions of great trust and honor, viz.: the Vice-Pres. of his class, Sophomore year, and scorer for the B. B. N. last season. Though not finally decided, it is extremely probable that the ministry will be his vocation. No. 3. MR. REUBEN E. FENTON, JR., known among a few of his inti- mate friends as Rube, is, we feel, very flatteringly portrayed. Our artist is to be congratulated on the happy way in which he has reproduced the Circassian feature, which forms such an important factor in the :esthetic beauty of this man. Rube is so well known to the college and the town that it is here unnecessary to go into detail, but we cannot refrain from admiring that faculty which enables him sri successfully to keep two irons on the altar of Eros without allowing either to coo . No. 4. In this sketch our artist presents MR. DAY at his best. The customary expression of acute anguish, habitual to his countenance when planning some bold stroke of business for the Glce Club or Brunonian, is absent, as is also the look of practical shrewdness acquired during his six years of business experience prior to iis entering college, the great benefits of which period he is so fond of relating to his friends. But the expression our artist has reproduced with most commendable correctness is that look assumed by Mr. DAY when reciting,-that trusting, plead- ing, soul-frenzied look, which goes straight to the heart of the beholder. In No. 5, ylou gaze upon the serene features of MR. J. De FOREST DAN- IELSON. his youth, as the blaze expression which is so well depicted indicates, is quite too weary of these slow surroundings. We regret sincerely that the lack of space precludes us from giving a full length portrait of him in one of his familiar poses as Apollo, thus not only displaying his graceful figure, but also doing justice to his clothes, which go to make up so much of this man. All copies are bad, because. no painter who is worth a straw ever will copy. He will make a study of a picture he likes for his own use in his own way, but he won't and he can't copyg and whenever you buy a copy you buy so much misun- derstanding of the original, and encourage a dull person in following a business he is not fitifor, besides increasing ultimately chances of mistake and imposture. You may, in fact, consider yourself as hav- ing purchased a certain quantity of mistakes, and according to your power, being engaged in disseminating them. - This advice can be very aptly applied to cigarette smokers. The original Straight Cut Cigarette is the RICHMOND Straight Cut brand, and purchasers are cautioned to observe that the signature of Allen Sz Ginter is on every package, and not be deceived by gross imita- tions.-Exchange Pajmr.
