PREFACE. Yes, the Liber is out, and it will be a narrow escape ifthe editors are not out. They have spared neither pains nor expense in its preparation, and in claiming that the Liber now before you is supe- rior to anything of its kind hitherto published, they expect its read- ers will bear them out-on a shutter I . Nothing of startling importance has happened at Brown since the last Liber was placed in your hands, except, perhaps, the unexpected completion of Memorial Hall, the equally unexpected completion of the Senior elections in one settingg the candidates being in waiting, and the wires working to perfection. The registrar has run the college satisfactorily to the Liber board during the past year. But the 4' honorable board of Fellows Src., 8zc., have in our humble opinion made a bad mistake in wrest- ing from the senior class the privilege of giving a free dinner to all the penurious clergymen within a radius ofa hundred miles of this village. Commencements in the future will be but slimly at- tended g the countless hordes of free dinner enthusiasts will remain away, and the University will surely go into a decline. W'e hope to see this mistake rectified after the present senior class graduates. As to athletics-As a whole, athletics have not made a very great stride forward during the past year, nor can we hope that they will, until we have- the much-cried-for gym -see Brunonian. In Base Ball wgmet with fair success last spring. The nine did excellent work, but were unfortunate. Base Ball seems to be, if possible, more popular than ever, and under the present system of management, we may fairly hope for a high place in the list next spring. Foot Ball-ha! ha! come on Princetons champions, come on Yales sluggers, our team is formidable--on paper. The glorious struggle between, 84 and 85, shows that foot ball is one of our strongholds, and, by carefully dodging all challenges we may win a record unspotted with defeat.
