GRAVES, X- 'P- PREFACE. Yes, the Liber is out, and it will be a narrow escape ifthe editors are not out. They have spared neither pains nor expense in its preparation, and in claiming that the Liber now before you is supe- rior to anything of its kind hitherto published, they expect its read- ers will bear them out-on a shutter I . Nothing of startling importance has happened at Brown since the last Liber was placed in your hands, except, perhaps, the unexpected completion of Memorial Hall, the equally unexpected completion of the Senior elections in one settingg the candidates being in waiting, and the wires working to perfection. The registrar has run the college satisfactorily to the Liber board during the past year. But the 4' honorable board of Fellows Src., 8zc., have in our humble opinion made a bad mistake in wrest- ing from the senior class the privilege of giving a free dinner to all the penurious clergymen within a radius ofa hundred miles of this village. Commencements in the future will be but slimly at- tended g the countless hordes of free dinner enthusiasts will remain away, and the University will surely go into a decline. W'e hope to see this mistake rectified after the present senior class graduates. As to athletics-As a whole, athletics have not made a very great stride forward during the past year, nor can we hope that they will, until we have- the much-cried-for gym -see Brunonian. In Base Ball wgmet with fair success last spring. The nine did excellent work, but were unfortunate. Base Ball seems to be, if possible, more popular than ever, and under the present system of management, we may fairly hope for a high place in the list next spring. Foot Ball-ha! ha! come on Princetons champions, come on Yales sluggers, our team is formidable--on paper. The glorious struggle between, 84 and 85, shows that foot ball is one of our strongholds, and, by carefully dodging all challenges we may win a record unspotted with defeat. Thle boating association, we are informed, still exists. SI took a good crew from us, but there is plenty of raw material left, whom a little water would not hurt. If the crews at present being organ- ized stick to their rowing machines and give us some good class races in the spring, it would give a decided impulse to the cause of boat- ing at Brown, which for some time past has been neglected for no good reason. YVe are pleased to notice the growing popularity of Tennis. Our splendid greens atibrd ample Eicilities for this game, and they will be increased when the middle campus becomes suiiiciently hard for tennis courts. The theatrical society, the Hammer and Tongs, continues to be deservedly popular. They gave a successful entertainment in the spring, which did the base ball treasury no harm. The Brunonian still remains the Liber's only legitimate rival. Our esteemed cotemporary is the same newsy energetic sheet as in years past, and has the same spontaneous and generous support. Its funny editor, like our own, is simply side-splitting. A glance at the Liber catalogue will show several changesin the faculty, the most notable ofwhich was the procuring at an enormous expense, of an assistant librarian, and fines must now be promptly paid in order to cover his salary. But enough of preface. Turn to the Liber itself and gather what you may from its contents. If there is anything instructive within its pages our labor has not been in vain. If there is anything amus- ing, it is more than we expected. If there is anything oftensive, pluck it out, and send the expurgated edition to your friends as a bona Hde copy of the Liber. If there are statements in which your name figures, and which appear to you to be ofthe Baron Munchau- sen order, remember that the editors have a very fertile imagination and take their statements t' cum grano salis.
