Oh!. there be players that I have seen play. and heard others praise. and that, neither having the accent of Christians. nor the gait of Christian. pagan. nor any man. have so acted that l have thought Nature had made men and not made them welL they imitated humanity so aborninablyf' quoth Shakespeare. It is with this quotation in mind. that the theater has been selected as the theme for the 1953 Brown School for Girls annual. Our school is the stage upon which the drama is enacted. The distinguished author, Dr. Iohn E. Brown. our founder. has selected Dr. Iohn E. Brown, Ir.. to produce the play. With our superintendent as director and the principal as stage manager. the show has been crowned with success. The stage staff. Mrs. Deloris Bubna. Mrs. La Bula Bratton and Miss Elizabeth Brown. our oiiice personnel. maintain things running smoothly backstage. Our teachers as dramatics coaches have educated us in expres- sion and charm: the Dean of Girls and housemothers. our art and technical directors. have charge oi the cast in general and of their problems in particular. And last. but by no means least. we have the maintenance and kitchen stafi composing the property crew. So. we possess on our beautiful campus a concordant group of people who live harmoniously together and in the outstanding fulfillment of their various duties create a masterpiece out of the drama of liie. This being our premiere presentation we shall begin by intro- ducing our guest Stars. p JOAFL MOWH ,Lf if We derive great pleasure from the dedi- cation of the 1953 CIELITO to two who stand as examples of ideal wornanhood, who through their deep faith and effort in upholding the high standards of Christian living have set for us a goal worthy of only the most expedient of personalities. This profound achievement has, without a doubt, been another illustration proving true the quotation, Behind every great man there is always a great woman. They represent the prototype of Chris- tian rnotherhood, having children of their own, and performing splendidly their re- spective roles of Mother and First Lady of X our schools. Although f ew oi us have met them personally, all oi us know them through the exalted precedent they have established for us by their wonderful char- acter, complet e understanding, sympathy, and remarkable maturity and wisdom. The Brown School for Girls trains youth to live. Graciousness, charm, and culture, as well as other characteristics that are a distinction of a well-bred young lady are emphasized, and we are elated to devote this annual to two whom we feel have not only attained, but mastered these and many other virtues of mother, wife, and above all, s ublimely-souled, lottyeminded and high-mettled ladies. it-f' Wm. Believing that the redeemed of the Lord should say so, as told in Proverbs 10712, the Youth Life Club has dedi- cated itself this year to proving that God's love knows no boundaries. These club members have found that they can glorify the Lord in all their activities- in the classroom, in the dormitory, in the recreation area ---and still claim his protection as long as they conduct them- selves in a Christian way. Their club activities have included de- bates on timely teen-age problems, visiting the Phil Kerr Monday Night Musical, sponsoring extra-special speak- ers in Wednesdays chapel, learning new choruses, and in general having a good time. Mrs. Bubna HOME ECONOMICS CLUB YOUNG LIFE CLUB Mrs. Therneau Mr. Bubna HOME ECONCMICS CLUB Dedicafed to the ideal that training to be Christian wives and mothers is the highest calling a girl can receive, the Home Economics Club has been a source of inspiration to all its members. The girls took the responsibility for several new protects this year including a Pie Supper to raise additional funds for their department and entertaining special speakers at their club meetings. Their speakers have all stressed good grooming, personality, and homemaking themes for teen-age girls. lUNIOR GLEE CLUB SENIOR Gu-:E CLUB Full merrily the lark doth sing and maketh glad the hearts of others. The Glee Club, under the direction of Miss La Vera Endicott, has brought about the fulfillment of the above quotation on our campus. This group of larks have entertained us at several school functions such as the Thanksgiving Chapel, the Christmas program, and the May Day celebration. Their versatile repertoire included l'landel's can- tata The Christmas Messiah and many other numbers with which they have participated in the California Association of Christian Schools Music Festival, musical programs at local churches, radio stations, and the Kiwanis Club. Miss Endicott IUNIOR GLEE CLUB Do-Re'Me-Fa-Sol were the first warblings of this younger set of Larks as they began to learn three part harmony, Their intensive practicing was rewarded by being able to par- ticipate in many school musical programs. SENIOR GLEE CLUB LOS NOVIAS ESPANOLAS The Spanish Club with this inviting name is one of the largest on campus, having a membership of about thirty girls. The club meets once a month with the primary purpose of practicing Spanish conversation. There is much merriment when someone says, Let me present my skirt, or when at the table someone says, please pass the :ult- case. The officers are chosen from Spanish ll, although all girls acting on commit- tees are appointed from Spanish I. The traditional Spanish Queen is chosen and reigns over the festivals. Las Novias Espanolas has taken many enjoyable outings, such as going to dinner at the famous El Po-che under the sponsorship of Mrs. Smith. Mn. Smith TRIPLE TRIO A '11, 'Z V LAS NOVIAS ESPANOLAS Miss Endicott TRIPLE TRIO Nine young ladies who are adept at singing close three part harmony are selected each year from the members of the Senior Glee Club to compose the TRIPLE TRIO. This year the group has lent its talents, on several occasions, for our entertainment. Included in this year's schedule were the Christmas pro- gram and also the Spring Recital. DELTA SIGMA TOASTMISTRESS CLUB The Expression Class organized as the Toastmistress Club, patterned after the international organization with din- ner meetings once a month at which time members had practice in after din- ner speaking, impromptu speeches, toastmistress practice, etc. These meet- ings were thoroughly enjoyed and great improvement was noticeable as the members overcame their timidity. Besides sponsoring the Thanksgiving banquet, the girls spoke in chapels, assemblies, and worked diligently to eam their Toastmistress pins which were available only after members had attained their three hundred points for various campus services. Smith DELTA SIGMA Delta Sigma is the honor service club. open to members of the Toastmistress Club who have earned three hundred points for campus services. The cov- eted pins are worn only by girls whose conduct has been exemplary, and whose grades have been of B average. A little white envelope slipped under a door, set many a heart fluttering as the lucky recipient read the invitation that gave her the right to wear the pledge pin. After two probationary weeks, this pin was replaced by the Delta Sigma pin, providing she was able to pass the strenuous tests of the pledging requirements. The beautiful initiation ritual is given before the student body and friends, and is a high moment in a girl's life on the Brown campus. This year's pledges were Io Anne Statler, Norma Kreimerman, Hildegard Spahr with Celia Sod and Lucila Llau- sas as candidates for later pledging. TOASTMISTRESS CLUB KLICK KLUB Destined to be the most inactive club on the campus this year, the Klick Klub was organized the first part of the fall semester to encourage and to teach better picture taking. Lots of pictures have been taken, but it is difficult to estimate just how much improvement was accomplished by the club. As expenses in photography have in- creased considerably, it was impossible to participate to any great extent in the many phases of photo making and developing. BIOLOGY CLUB Mr. Thomouu Mr. Young KLICK KLUB BIOLOGY CLUB The members of the B.S.G. Biology Club have disproved the idea that only men can possess scientific minds. To prove the above statement, read further. One fair day in September, the club went on an expedition up into San Gabriel Canyon to explore water life. Some of the club did their collecting from the shore while the braver ones went bcating. This was a very profit- able trip. Some of the specimens ob- served were fish, ducks, dragonflies, algae, and of course, male homo sap iens tages l7-195. To you anti-biologists, the latter means boys. Excitement reached its peak when Mr. Young, the club sponsor, became sea sick and the girls had to take him to shore. Another activity was their club break- fast which was really most scientific. The most modern cooking methods were used. The coffee and hot chocolate were made in beakers over bunson burners, and although they hated to break their record, they were forced to fry the bacon, eggs, and waffles on the proper equipment. Other activities included visits to Griffith Observatory, La Brea Tar Pits, and the Marine Museum at Cabrillo Beach. Mn. Orcutt Mrs. Bog Mn. Themeau GIRLS' ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION We the members of G.A,A. do or' dain and establish this constitution for the purpose of furthering interest in Athletics, and creating supervised athletics. This year's G.A.A. has tried to live up to their constitution by taking steps forward on the path of athletic achieve' ment. Several girls have earned their pins and letters. These awards were earned at the rate of two points per hour, by participating in various sports. A total of 150 points was required for a letter and an additional 50 points was required to entitle a girl to a pin. Some of the activities engaged in were intramural tournaments, volley- ball, basketball, and baseball games, Also, more individual sports such as hiking, and swimming which included an aquacade. TRIPLE V CLUB TRIPLE V CLUB In order to promote cultural knowl- edge and understanding of the Latin and Spanish influences in our world, the Triple V Club was organized this year for students of Latin, Latin Amer- ica, and world history by Mrs. Orcutt and Mrs. Rogers. Their motto I came, I saw, I conquered is the English translation for the Latin Veni, Vicli, Vici. On the second and fourth Wednesday of each month at six in the evening, the club has enjoyed a variety of pro grams and friendly association and fel- lowship. Although the charter mem- bership was small, other girls came to seek and enjoy the benefits offered by this new club, Mrs. Young GIRLS ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION .-nissan: BOWLING CLUB Every other week the members of the Bowling Club climbed into the bus right after school and headed for the Glendora Bowl-a-way. They all started with about the same score, but as the year progressed, so did the scores. The most amazing part of their record was that no one followed the ball down the alley. The group concentrated on achieving a higher scoring average and also the correct procedure in recording the scores. Mrs. Themoau Mill Endicott ICE SKATING CLUB BOWLING CLUB ICE SKATING CLUB Flashing blades, skinned knees, and sore muscles were the insignias for the Ice Skating Club this year, depend- ing on the category of the skater. The club attended the Pasadena Winter Gardens twice monthly, under the spon- sorship oi Miss La Vera Endicott.
