Michael English Each great warrior ot his'tory has his band ot musicians to inspire his troops to victory. This tra- dition still has its' place in every military post in the world. Capt. Allen T. Hendren has urged the Academy band to be just such a source ot inspiration to the cadet corps. On September, l957, a group ot young musicians met each other tor the tirst time. Two weeks later they won tirst place in the Fiesta de la Luna parade at Chula Vista and two weeks atter that tirst place in the Apple Day parade at Julian. This same tine spirit has been evident throughout the year. Each Thursday Chapel service is inspired by the martial music ot the band. Award assemblies have been tavored by tamiliar concert selections. The Chapel services on the Sunday parade days have been enhanced with sacred selections. On March 6, l958, the band was invitedto participate in the San Diego City and County Music Festival. The three Adjudicators were unanimous in awarding a superior rating to the band.

IIH AND B ISLE EIJHPS AI The Drum and Bugle Corps has been very successful this year. We were able to add a scarlet red tourragere to our unitorm which was' exclusive with the Corps. We have learned tive songs, including Black Jack, which we have played with the regular band. Some ot our accomplishments have been tying tor tirst place in the Federal Inspection and participating in the San Bernardino Orange Show. We have also played with the band in tull dress parades. We owe our success to Captain Collins, the banclmaster, who has taught and directed us, and to our cadet leaders, Lieutenant Silverman and drum major Corporal Jerome. This band has played several concerts tor the lower school. The progress' ot this band has been very gratitying to all who have heard '- Cadet Lt. Renny Serin, 5th grade, is the Cadet Band Director.
