'big' ff' , ' e 3,5 Q'-'jj gjfj Q.,,.,..Q:j-1 -. Do You Know THE CLASSES? To be a member of the Brown High School student body is to be the inheritor of an academic tradition stretching back for several generations. West End sometimes called The Mother of Atlanta, has a history of over a hundred and twenty years, and the story of its interest in education goes back to Civil War days. Its first known school was taught by General Graves of the Confederate Army and was located on Ashby Street. This was followed by Dr. Brurnby s school at Oak and Peeples. Then came the famous West End Academy, which educated some of Atlanta s most prominent citizens and remained into the 1900 s as Lee Street School. Peeples Street School was also among the city s first elementary schools in the Public School System. In 1923, the Joseph E. Brown Junior High School took its place on the scholastic horizon. Twenty-four years later the Brown Community High School was initiated under the principalship of Mr. A. G. Martin, who had headed the junior high since its inception. Mr. J. Everette DeVaughn came as principal in 1957. Many of Brown's graduates have left for the finest univer- sities in the South and other parts of the country and have continued to carry on academic standards they practiced here. Some have returned to teach. Others have visited back and are indicative of the fact that they come back with pleasant memories of live well-spent years. Whether you are a sub-freshman staring at your first Lau- reate or are an old timer looking here for familiar places and the faces of old friends, the Staff hopes it has given you a book full of happy and proud memories of a place in which it was good to grow up. - ,,.,..,,,,.f.,. ,. ua. ku HN... v :Q ,, 5 --fm .. -.-1 .-f-.r:iu-..-:.v.....- ., . It was filled with many faces, rooms, halls, bells and ac- tivities to which you were unaccustomed. You enjoyed going to the pep meetings, but they were also unfamiliar. Most of the cheers and songs were new to you, but you learned them a little better each week. Even though you were new to Brown and Brown was new to you, you loved it, for you were a part of it. You will never forget this year-for you were a sub-freshman. ' President . . . MIKE HEDGES Vice-President . . Do You Know THE MILITARY? Perhaps not even the boys in the Brown High Battle Group have examined those long blue streamers attached to the staff of the Group s colors. The dates of these streamers proclaim the fact that Brown High has been an Honor School in Mili- tary since the community high s inception in 1947. And this year, in the Veteran s Day Parade, our unit was judged Best Battle Group of all those participating. In the future our cadets will have many memories of the classrooms in the basement of the gym. Here maps became more meaningful to them. Here the boys became familiar with some of our modern weapons and learned some of the elements of present-day warfare. On the rifle range a few developed into expert marksmen. All military courtesy and neatness of dress have become habits which will remain with them throughout their manhood. On the parade ground they learned that even the simplest bodily movements, if well done, require ceaseless practice but that moving in perfect coordination with hundreds of others is a thrill which few except the soldier may ever feel. And then there were the parades . . . and passing in review with a band playing . . . the glorious summation of it all. The Laureate Staff hopes that -the following pages will bring back vivid impressions of those hours in the military classrooms, those cold days on the field when the rifle hand grew numb, those hot days when the rifle was heavy and the step dragged, but especially those moments of realization that There Is Something About a Soldier. vw., --:1 , 1 www... f 1 'EV , .- V-.. ,mf--Q-, ill... , .V It My Wlgl A Jn- l F I , Q ....- -Q.. .A ... 5 s 7 7 sq, . -'f ' , rua-iagmgffmbsfwnm' .vlxQfHter-'f.wfi?it':g:s:e5fEFQiir219fLNa'rfi'iaSxw'vt vi f 227'-'eeklLQrf-1ra5.brqv59'1-ufgr ii -Q...
