Jrowx jCouxty MiGH School s NASHVILL£, INDIANA.’ VOLUmE 1. A view of our new school shows work toward its completion. 4 Early Morning Classes Give Way hntering the door of the new high school are some stu- looks of all those hooks, dents who seem to be ready for plenty of work from the 2 Enjoying some milk during a break between classes gives these fellows a pleasant refresher for the next class. to Less Serious Moments Maybe he doesn’t really mean it, Mrs. Duke. Ah! Those good old school days. Not much work—lots of fun. 3 Here workmen add the finishing parts to the bleachers in our new gymnasium, much to the thrill of the many enthusiastic basketball fans. Pep Rallies and School Assemblies Electric shock? No, just a jump by our cheerleaders caught in midair. This is during one of the last pep rallies held in the old gym. 4 Enliven the Routine of Work School is out until tomorrow, and the mad rush for home U on. Standing as a symbol of the heart of our county government is the courthouse. Through Many Threads . . . Our students take pride in the buildings and customs for which Brown County is known. The Little Theater, County Library, County Courthouse, and church are but a few of the institutions known throughout the county. Much informative and entertaining reading has been derived from our county library. 6 Plays presented dur- ing the summer months by 1.13. capture the in- terest of Midwesterners. A Community Affects Our Lives 7 Senior Cords Still a Tradition Favorite saying , names, and events decorate these cords. 8 Just dusting out the old fire escape. No messy lockers in this school! Some Favorite Activities And Then the New Equipment 10 A nail here and a nail there eventually led to the comple- tion of our new school. This workman is but one of the many who have worked toward this goal. Vttk the arrival of 90 murli new it to be installed, there suddenly to be a shortage of time and Students gladly offered their in tinloading and setting equipment. II There' plenty of suspense while awaiting the crowning of the prom king and queen. A kiss for the queen from last year’ king. Informal singing and playing finished off the after-prom party in the Commons. Nashville’s ’61 Prom Leading off the dance are Donna Voland and Steve Miller, prom queen and king of 1961. Dancing under the soft lights of the Frangipani Room added much glamour to the evening. Fred Brester and Diane Woodbouse rule as kin and queen with their royal court. The 1961 Helmsburg Prom Last year’s Prom king. Bob Kirts, crowns me queen of the 1961 Junior-Senior Prom. “Officer Schmidt” forces the ashamed “Jud- on” out of the line up to face questioning. ‘‘Melvin Stoddard” and “Mary Bell enjoy the company of “The Bow during a break in re- hearsal. They Take Their Drama Seriously The play, “Six Stitches lor Ego” was presented by the Junior class of 1961. In the upper left, “Kay Stoddard” puts an end to the Bell School for Adults through the police de- partment. The lower left reveals “Greta” giving her feet a mud bath, and in the upper right, shy “Melvin” lets off steam to “Dr. Bell.” The industrious-looking student with hU feet propped up on Activity seems to be at a stand still in our new gymnasium, dhe principal's desk is none other than Harry Meshbrrger. It’s It looks almost too pretty to play a game on, doesn't it? sorely not that easy for Mr. Dukel But Life Has Its Lighter Side These Senior class officers don't seem to be talking over earth-shattering events. 15 Tim Senior haw worn ihril Uadi tiooal cuitl tvilh pride, planned Ihoir future with prrwt nrtirip lion, and tnmlr valuable friend- •hip , A they T “food-by tu «hoof, dwy laic thn e rnemoric mto ■ nnw life 4 adult rr f n l- bllititw. This is the first year the subject has been offered. Subjects to Fit Every Need Despite the allure of extracurricular activities, academic activities continue to be the basic reason for one's being in school. To meet the problems of today’s complex world, the administration has worked hard to offer an ade- quate curriculum at B.C.H.S. Old courses have been stiffened; new courses have been added; standards have been raised. As a result, today s is the finest curriculum ever offered in a Brown County high school. More is offered in the sciences, languages, and mathematics than ever before. The traditional courses in English, history, and government have been stiffened. In addition, the student has a rich choice of electives in psychology-, sociology, journalism, home econom- ics, shop, art and the crafts. Best of all the curric- ulum is being kept flexible so that new courses can be added as necessary, or old courses dropped if they have outlived their usefulness. 30 Chemistry experiments are many under the instruction of Mr. Shisler. Science Develops Greater Minds v.v.'.y 31 Science teacher, Mr. Lutea, directs his class study toward the solar system. Metal work requires careful and skillful handling of the various machines. Vocational Training Provided Mr. William essential. shows his students blueprints which will guide them in their work. Accurate drawing and planning are Jack Leonard finishes landing his gunrack made in the wood shop area. Many useful products are made as a result of skillful work by these students. Through Industrial Arts Precise measurements are stressed greatly by Mr. Williams in the Drafting area. Under the guidance of Mrs. Congram, Ihc girls learn lo sew beautiful clothing. Homemaking Skills Valuable Icing a cake is but one of the many skills in cooking and baking taught by Mrs. Updike. 34 Student teacher, Marvin Martin looks on tut a game ol line soccer gets under way in the Boys’ P.E. class. Healthy Bodies Through P.E. 35 Building pyramids attracts the interest of the Girls’ P.E. class taught by Mrs. Hulfaker. First-year typing student develop speed and accuracy under the direction of Mr . Kinney. Bookkeeping is important to many students interested in the business world. Mrs. Helms guides the students toward a better un- derstanding of the subject. Business A new course this year is Secre- tarial Practice, taught by Mrs. Duke. The use of office machines and techniques in actual secretarial work are of primary importance. Education The fundamental rules of every-day business are studied through General Businrsa. L 37 i Shorthand students take dictation which they will transcribe on the typewriters in the background. They Train for Careers 38 Jim Bush reads a selection from a sophomore literature book. Mrs. Wil- liams teaches this class. English and Latin Are Basic Mrs. Gondring has her class identify flash cards in Latin. 39 Joe Petro, in Psychology, tries to find out if Andy Rains has ESP (extra sensory perception.) Profit Charles Graham finds amuse- ment in listening to a tape re- cording of his voice in Communi- cations class. Lecturing hia U. S. History pupils is Mr. Steinke, teacher of the history and government classes at BCHS. Through Speech and History Sociology was just introduced this year to our seboed and is taught by Mrs. Bunge. Staff helpers for the BCHS band include (I to r) Mike Robertson. Donald Davis, Steve Spicer, David Woods, Donna Mattinglv, and Janet Sturgeon. Administration A new image of the school is emerging. It will offer many inducements to learning, especially those represented by contact with creative teachers and the ideas found in great books and other records of human achievement. In all it does, the school will seek to awaken a wish to know, and a will to use knowledge for the common good. It will exercise intelligence and imagination in providing more and more effective means , toward the achievement of these aspirations by more and more of those with whom it deals. It is the purpose of Brown County Schools to be a part of this new image. CkjjL------ Warren Ogle, Supl. 46 These Six Are the Men Who Guide Brown County’s Schools RAYMOND L. Basketball and baseball used to be the principal, if not the only, sports that were open to students at Helmsburg, Nashville, and Van Buren High Schools. Now that all three are consolidated in one school, the sports program is to be, greatly expanded. If present plans materialize, there will not only be these two traditional sports, but track, football, cross-country, tennis, gymnastics, and perhaps still others in the near future. Cross-country was introduced three years ago: track, one year ago. Football is on the horizon, per- haps next year, certainly no later than two years from now. The school needs only a suitable field. The Athletic Department has adequate funds for equipment. Tennis courts should be open to students at about the same time football comes into its own. But this isn’t all of the future athletic program, by any manner of means. Nearly $2,500 in gym- nastic equipment has been ordered for B.C.H.S., and a thorough program will be underway in this depart- ment in two years. Instruction in golf will also be a part of the athletic program, and will be offered those who want a grounding in the fundamentals of this sport. The Brown County Eagles ended the basketball season with a record of 20 victories and 3 defeats. This year's team was one of the best teams Brown County has ever had. Although the boys did not win the sectional, they did beat Columbus—a feat that has rarely been accomplished by a Brown County team. The records set by this team will probably stand for years to come. A Fine Season The BCHS Reserve basketball team wound up its 1961-62 season with a fine 15-3 record, one of the best ever posted by a Brown County reserve squad. Two of its three losses were by only two points. This performance is of more than passing interest to basketball followers, since 10 of the 11 members of the senior squad will be lost through graduation. The winning tradition built up by the BCHS veterans will have to be car- ried on by the reserves. It looks as though they have the ability to do so. t We They Waldron 34 45 Shawswick 34 36 Hauser . 50 33 Southwestern .. 44 41 Ninevah 44 28 Morgantown..................... 52 30 Stinesville______________________50 28 Ninevah . ... 55 32 32 Monrovia 60 Marshall Twn. . 6-1 23 North Vernon ‘ . ..49 51 Trafalgar----------------------- 51 31 Clark Twn, _____________________ 50 24 Edinburg . 47 40 Oolitic 53 31 Union Twn. 61 22 University 48 41 Union ville 56 26 63 Stcvo Miller launches himself into orbit again ! Lower right: Columbus Bill Russell grabs a rebound in the midst of a swarm of Brown County players. The Brown County Eagles performed brilliantly in the first two games of the Columbus sectional, defeating Triton and Columbus, but lost the all-important final game to Shclbyville. In the first game, the Eagles defeated Triton 65-55. In the second game, they showed their superiority by defeating the Columbus Bulldogs, 66-63. By the final game the Eagles were so exhausted from their Columbus duel they were not in peak form for Shelbyville and lost 86-70. At right, high-jumping Steve Miller goes high lo unare a rebound from Shelbyville. Win First Two Games, Drop Third The Pep Club shown the intensity of its emotions at the Columbus game. Dave Butler, Leon Pittman, Robbie Bowden, and Justin Dobbs, Track Becomes a Major Sport After Only One Year A new sport, track, has come to rival basketball and baseball as a major sport at Brown County High School. Introduced only two years ago, it has been adopted with enthusiasm by the school. The squad produced a very respectable record in the nine meets held last spring. Coach Frank Zody discovered some surprising talent in his first squad; notably Steve Miller, who ran the 100 yd. dash in 10.1 see., cleared 5’ V’ on the high jump, and jumped 20? 6 Vi” in the running broad jump. Andy Bains and Robbie Bowden turned out to lie strong competitors in the Vi mile event. Justin Dobbs found his specialities in the relay and the 100 yd. dashes. John Hammond was the only pole vaulter. Last year we won our meets with Ellettsville and the Columbus Reserves, and placed second in tri- school meets at Waldron and Franklin. 70 Starting indoor practice are four member of last year’ squad—Don Kirts, Andy Rains, Leon Pittman (with the shot), and Ronnie Smith. Candidates for ’62 Squad Limber Up Practicing starts for the dashes are (left to right) Bill Robertson, Jim Kennedy, Justin Dobbs, and Steve Miller. BCHS-1961 Crosscountry Team included: (Top row): Coach Ted Shider, Cary Deaver, Steve Kritzer, Steve Miller, Ron Smith. Don Kirts. John Rudd. Any Rain , Spike Hammond, and Track Coach Frank Zody. Bottom row: Joe Petro, BiU Robertson. Larry Shipley, David Butler, Robbie Bowden, Mark Kritzer, and Billy Kritzer.
