Mt. Sterling High School was erected in 1897. Through the years there were several additions added to the original building. In 1925, a new gym was added. Then in 1946 a Quonset Hut was added for the Music Department, and, in 1948, the Agriculture Department was added. In the fall of 1951 the old building was changed to the Junior High Building. The 1951-52 school year saw the opening of Brown County High School in a new location and a new building. Due to slow construction, school was opened on September 18, 1951. At that time, the building consisted of 16 classrooms, a Li-brary Study Hall combined, a gym, and a Home Economics room. Nine years later, in 1960, there were four more additions: the Agriculture Department, the Industrial Arts, cafeteria, and auditorium. Twelve more years saw some more additions being made. In 1972, a self- contained building was added to the campus for the Music Department, Art Department, and Auto Mechanics. When the building was opened in 1951, it was considered one of the most modern in Illinois. Even though we can no longer claim that, we are all still proud to be part of Brown County High School and its history.
