K A FOREWORD Thin in Another Rambler, m memento of our achool days at Mt. Sterling High School. May we And a much pleasure, in after years, in the reading of these events as we found in their occurrence. w Hrown County High School Kt. 24, Sast, P.O. Hon 152 ML Sterling. Jllinois 62353 A Zouch Of Class Mt. Sterling High School was erected in 1897. Through the years there were several additions added to the original building. In 1925, a new gym was added. Then in 1946 a Quonset Hut was added for the Music Department, and, in 1948, the Agriculture Department was added. In the fall of 1951 the old building was changed to the Junior High Building. The 1951-52 school year saw the opening of Brown County High School in a new location and a new building. Due to slow construction, school was opened on September 18, 1951. At that time, the building consisted of 16 classrooms, a Li-brary Study Hall combined, a gym, and a Home Economics room. Nine years later, in 1960, there were four more additions: the Agriculture Department, the Industrial Arts, cafeteria, and auditorium. Twelve more years saw some more additions being made. In 1972, a self- contained building was added to the campus for the Music Department, Art Department, and Auto Mechanics. When the building was opened in 1951, it was considered one of the most modern in Illinois. Even though we can no longer claim that, we are all still proud to be part of Brown County High School and its history. 112 Many Clubs have come and gone in the past. Some of the clubs that no longer exist are: Conservation Club, Science Club, V.V. Club, SIY Club, and others. Some of the new clubs that replace them are JETS, and The Journey. Regardless of the number of clubs available to the students, they always seem to be able to think up more. We hope the future will be all the students could wish for. n nu i xx fc l jtivlll -41 i V V v A. . They have changed drastically during the last 86 years. These pictures will show some of the changes that have taken place. Compared to today's uniforms, some of these look very uncomfortable. Many Kings and Queens have come and gone in the history of Brown County High School. Along with the Kings and Queens, many dances have also come and gone. With each dance and coronation, new memories have been created and dreams have come true for many couples. With each new dance, new styles have come and gone, both in dress and in crowns. We hope these photos will bring back some happy moments for the Kings and Queens of BCHS. This ends our section Memories . We hope the past pages have brought back some memories and maybe caused a few smiles. The past 49 editions of the Rambler have each been very special in their own way. We wish we could have included pictures from every book, but, due to lack of space we were not able to. We hope that the pages we have used will be enjoyed by all. Some of the faces may be recognized, for the others, check your old yearbooks, they all came from there. t 16 Auto Mechanics is taught by Mr. McMahon and Mr. Ramsey. The students are Juniors and Seniors from BCHS and Rushville. In class they learn many things. Some examples are: tuneups, overhauls, wheel alignment, brake repair, transmissions, wiring, body repair, and general service. This better work! Now how does this go? This paint better come out! Auzo MseHAwes Fill in all those holes. I think it's down there somewhere. Come off there! This is going to be spotless! 18 Will this fit? Get the right amount. Mix it well. The Home Economics classes introduce the student to clothing construction, foods preparation, child care, home and money management, and consumer education. The following years go into more detail of these subject areas. The class also prepares the food for many of the functions that occur throughout the year at BCHS. f The students in Industrial Arts learn many things. Their first year is a mixture of Drafting, Woodworking, Electricity, and Metals. In the next three years they can get advanced knowledge in each of these areas. At the end of each year the student has finished products to show what they have learned. I hope this corner fits! Get it real smooth! What's in there? Measure it right! I've almost got it! The 1985-86 year for the Biology class has been very exciting. Dissecting was one of the main events of the year. Some of the victims of these amusing experiments were small crayfish, earthworms, grasshoppers, and squid. Each one had to be dissected and the organs identified. The class also observed and compared octopus, leaches, and worms. Mendel's pea plant the Elo-dea Cell, and glucose models were also studied. One other very interesting matter studied was how genetics is used and how it works. In addition to learning these various fascinating things, the life cycle of the Aurelis, a type of jelly fish, was also studied. One nice thing about this class is the many living creatures in the classroom. They include turtles, fish, birds, salamanders, spider eggs, and many green plants. That is totally gross! What's next????? It's in there somewhere. 21 Physical Education is a four year curriculum. There are a variety of activities taught each year. Some examples are: flag football, soccer, hockey, basketball, aerobics, volleyball, and softball. With each new game learned, there is a skills test and a written exam. I LOVE TO EXERCISE! Pmvsjcajc S Perfect form. I CAN get it across. I'm so excited and I just can't hide it. Dan Rentmeister received two wins in one night by technical foul. Ben Moore received a First place medal at the Hamilton Invitational. He also received a Second Place medal at Regionals, which advanced him to Sectionals. At sectionals, he won his first match, but lost his second. Without our coaches, we wouldn't have teams for our athletes and their fans. Each coach spends many extra hours before and after school preparing their players for the season. Once the actual competition starts, even more time is given by each coach. Each game brings on new anxieties. Along with the thrill of victory, they must also accept defeat. They must also set good examples of sportsmanship by accepting unfair calls and show dedication by putting other problems on hold during practices and games. Our coaches are always there when they are needed, helping all they can, whether it involves extra curricular activities or academic problems. A SPECIAL THANKS TO OUR COACHES!! The newspaper was started in 1935 and was called the Oriole because of the school colors, which were orange and black. During the last week of October, 1945, the school colors were changed to green and white because so many schools used orange and black. The staff decided that a new title was needed and asked the students for suggestions. The name Stinger was selected on April 18, 1946. Stinger was chosen because it pertained to a Hornet. The Stinger has continued publication on an irregular basis during the last few years, but we look forward to the next issue. For the first time in Brown County history, the faculty found it necessary to go on strike. Each of us, whether student, faculty, parent, or administration, must accept the facts and issues as we saw them. It is not for us to decide who was right or who was wrong, but to come to a working compromise. Hopefully, we can use the knowledge gained from this experience to work together toward a better future for all. Quadruplets??? Pet Shop Boys. Get some sleep! Good Morning, Teacher! The Rambler was first published in 1928. It was discontinued in 1929, but, due to student efforts, it was published again in 1938. Each edition has captured it's own set of memories and is very special. Through the years, both past and present, the Rambler Staff has tried to create a book to remind the students and faculty of the hours spent in high school. Although we are not able to capture every event or special moment, we hope our books will bring back special memories for each of you. During the past, many problems have been met and overcome by each staff. We, the Rambler Staff for 1985-86, would like to say THANK YOU to all past Rambler Staffs. Without you and the effort you put out, we would not be celebrating our 50th Edition.
