Sterling, Illinois 2 BROWN COUNTY STATE BANK DEDICATION While in college Mr. Newton decided to become a coach since he enjoyed athletics and working with young people. He graduated from Eastern Illinois University at Charleston, in 1967. He began his teaching career at Lawrenceville, from there he was employed at Blue Mound, Winchester, Carrolton, and Earlville before coming to BCHS. Today he is the Athletic Director as well as the head football coach and head basketball coach. He taught at Winchester for eight years, while there he married Brenda K. Coats, who is employed as a legal secretary in Mt. Sterling. They have two daughters, Tracey Renae, age 7, and Jodee, age four. During his free time he enjoys participating in football, golf, and numerous other sports. When asked what he would like to contribute to BCHS, he replied, “I would like to make the student body and the community understand that everyone is a Hornet. We’re all here to make each other better, and I think we need to have more pride in our school.” He belieYes the school spirit has been improved by his team slogans, “P.A.S.E.”, Positive Action, Super Effort, and “Hor-et Fever-Catch It.” The Rambler staff wishes Mr. Newton the best of luck in the future. BROWN COUNTY FARM BUREAU D UUUJU The Theme of the 1979-1980 Rambler is “Every Ending is a New Beginning.” The Seniors will be featured throughout the book because they are ending their high school years and beginning to pursue their ambitions. At each day’s end, we all look to the next day’s beginning in anticipation of the things to come. Such was the case this year at Brown County High School; the student body and faculty seemed to “come alive” after so long a period of dormant school spirit. As the year unfolded, each activity spread the small flame of school spirit until it was a blazing fire, consuming each and every person involved. Increased participation, genuine interest in school affairs, and sincere desire to change and improve were three important factors in revitalizing pride in Brown County. Hopefully, the ending of this period of apathy brings the beginning of an era of involvement in the school that continues in the years to come. Above, counterclockwise, Superintendent William Vierling, Principal Robert Decker, Board Secretary Janet Harshman, Board Secretary Carol Moody. The Brown County Community Unit District Number One School Administration has an important role in keeping the school system running smoothly. School board members Richard Salrin, president, Charles Koch, vice-president, Tom Schneider, secretary, Art Yin-gling, Jim Reische, Marie Glasgow, and Dave Newell meet once a month to make decisions that can have effect on class trips, athletics, arts, and of course, academics. It is their duty to hire a competent faculty to give the students in the district the best possible education they can get. The board secretaries work hard to keep information running through smooth channels so the members will keep informed on the business at hand. You will find Carol and Janet very helpful in obtaining school information. Mr. Decker oversees the students at the county high school. His job requires many long and hard hours, attending meetings and school functions besides his regular administrative duties. , Mr. Vierling, superintendent, serves in the most demanding role. Public relations is the name of his game. Trying to educate Brown County school children and young adults is his main concern and he devotes many hours and lots of energy to this task. When you begin to take your school system for granted, remember that these people are behind it all, giving much time and energy and their most rewarding pay is a community who appreciates their efforts. The senior class along with their sponsors Miss Zabel and Mr. Hulvey, were able to work together and produce a series of spectacular Homecoming events that are sure to live in our memories for a long time. An exciting all school tug-of-war was held with the faculty team tugging its way to victory. The senior girls also got into the action with their powder puff football game against the junior girls. A grand parade of floats from some of the organizations and all the classes was shown with first place going to the freshman class. The entire student body twisted and turned their way through Mt. Sterling in a snake dance that ended with a rousing bonfire and pep rally. The high point of the celebration was the Brown County-Unity Homecoming football game. The Hornets fought their way to an overwhelming 42-0 victory. The annual Homecoming dance highlighted the occasion with Debbie Parker and Jeff McDaniel being crowned the new Homecoming queen and king. “Our Principal???!!!” Oops!!!” 24 DEMOCRAT MESSAGE LAND OF LINCOLN MOTEL 25 Who cares if they can’t play ball? Teachers like students need time to relax and pursue interests other than in their profession. Some of the sports participated in include: jogging, bowling, golf, ping-pong, tennis, swimming, softball, fishing and hunting. More sedentary past-times such as reading and needlework are also enjoyed by some of the staff. Still others mingle work and pleasure after hours: some run farms, do carpenter work, lay brick, and play in bands. Evelyn Kamm Susie Lerch Kyle Evans, and Spencer Stein J.R. Rambler is not your average run of the mill club, our goal is to make up and publish the high schools yearbook. Staff members learn how to put together the book at summer workshops: while there they become familiar with picas, job numbers, reps., and 3-R forms. Rambler is deadlines, working into the night, drinking soda, eating, trying to put the right name to the right face, picture days, and dreaming up crazy captions. Finally, when our work is done, we breath a sigh of relief, because we know we’ve done our best and we hope everyone at BCHS will enjoy the results. .... CONTINUED ....
