RAMBLER 1979 BROWN COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL MT. STERLING, ILLINOIS 62353 VOLUME 45 POSITIVE ATTITUDE SUPER EFFORT P.A.S.E. TABLE OF CONTENTS FACULTY 6-11 CLASSES 12-51 ORGANIZATIONS 54-69 SPORTS 70-87 ACTIVITIES 88-99 CLOSING 100 ADS DEDICATION Mrs. Busen graduated and recieved her teaching degree from Western Illinois University at Macomb. She has taught in the Brown County school system for twenty-one years. Her first job was in a one room school house where she taught all grades. She then taught Junior High Language Arts at North Grade for seventeen years. For the past two years she has taught Freshman English here at BCHS. During this time she was the sponsor for the NHS. Mrs. Busen resides with her husband Herbert on a farm near Timewell. They have three children: Dianne, an anesthethist, Patricia, a teacher, and Roger, who attended Illinois College and is now engaged in farming. Her hobbies include reading, cooking, unusual dishes), and collecting antiques. When asked her wish for BCHS she said, I hope it will continue to strive to produce good students by providing challenging and interesting subjects and materials.'1 She also stated that, 1 'The greatest thing about teaching is the contact with the students. It is a very rewarding experience. By being in touch with youth and working with them, I have gained as much as they have. Also, I have made many lasting friendships with the people 1 have worked with. When 1 walk down the street they always speak.'1 Mrs. Busen is retiring this year. It is with deep gratitude for her years of service to the Brown County School System that we dedicate this Rambler to her. 5 Mr. Ramsay demonstrates principles of physics so students will understand better Mrs. Wagner is still smiling at the end of her second year at BCHS. FACULTY MEETING Here's Mr. Meats' top Biology student; he really works them to the bone. This odd character was found lurking around BCHS. He claimed to be Mr. Decker the principal; likely story. However, there is some seriousness in this close-knit group, for behind all the crazy actions and appearances are aspiring young musicians, auctioneers, teachers, beauticians, and secretaries. If these young people can keep both the humorous and serious sides of life in mind as they work toward their goals, they will go far. The fall magazine sale was a big success with a good response from the general public. The Juniors were busy during the winter months with concessions and one bake sale. The Spring months found the class busy with prom preparations. A good sum of the Junior treasury went forward for a most delightful and elegant prom. After prom, the Juniors relaxed and are now making big plans for the upcoming year, with homecoming and graduation. 29 BOTTOM TO TOP: Class Officers Emily Salrin, Steve Leverton, Cheryl Clark, Carol Cook. The theme for the float was Kiss Those Cardinals Goodbye. After Homecoming a number of money making projects took place. Magazine sales started it all off along with the Juniors. After that came the fruit sales, and then sharing the concessions during the Regionals with the Juniors . Some fun was spent throughout the year with class parties. On December 16, a Christmas Party was held in the gym. April 28 there was a swimming party at the Jacksonville YMCA. 36 TOP TO BOTTOM: Class Officers: Daryl Starky, Chris Hogan, Tim Moore, Susan Miller. The Quiz Bowl team defeated Marquette High School of West Point, Iowa and Clark County High School of Missouri. From there Brown County went into the semifinals and lost to QHS II. Each program was televised on Channel 10. The Physics Bowl team went to WIU for a day and defeated Taylor-ville High School and Rushville. Next BCHS went into the semi-finals and were defeated by Spring-field and Macomb. BCHS ended up with third place. Season records do not always suggest the success achieved during a given year and certainly 1978 was such a year for Hornet football. The 1-8 record does not make evident the degree of effort displayed by the team and coaches. The Rambler staff feels, however, that Coach Newton deserves a special thanks for injecting some new spirit into our team. Faced with a small squad and an inexperienced coaching staff Coach Newton provided the sound judgement and strength the Hornets will need in the rebuilding period ahead. 72 Clockwise from below: Brown County players watch in anticipation of their victory over Unity - Coach Newton stands with seniors Chris Wort, Bruce Wort, Rick Kunkel, Gale Henry, Dave Galloway and Kevin Bigley -Coach Newton again with team co-captains Bruce Wort and Rick Kunkel. BEHIND: LAST YEAR'S KING AND QUEEN, GARY BOWEN AND LEANN PERRY HOMECOMING The 1978 Homecoming was the last great project the seniors would approach in a unified effort during their high school career. Under the direction of their sponsors Mr. Musgrave and Mr. Stein, they succeeded in showing the cooperative spirit it takes for any successful venture. Floats were built by many organizations and all the classes with the sophomores taking first place. A Snake Dance was held which carried the entire student body winding and twisting around Mr. Sterling. The football game was the low point of the weekend as the Hornets were clobbered by Hamilton. However, the Hornets showed spirit again and played 4 tough quarters of football. The dance high-lighted the proceedings and the 1978 Homecoming ended on a sound and funfilled note. 91 Opposite page; Top to Bottom, Left to right; Barb Busen and Mark Jennings, Bruce Wort and Diane Metzger, 1978 King John Crank and Queen Becky Wilkerson.
