Four tweets of the whistle and the Marching Hornets step off. Virgin de la Marcarena was sounded by 75 instrumentalists in many parades throughout the area. Marching before the band were batons, rifles, and the color guard. The field show presented by the Marching Hornets was supplemented at each viewing with a new song or drill, and the final time drum majorette LeAnn Perry led the band onto the football field the entire show was presented. Batons twirled, flags swirled, and rifles spun to make the Marching Hornets impressive to see as well as to hear. GO Homecoming '77 became a three day affair as festivities ranged from October 20 to October 22. On Thursday night a Snake Dance weaved its way through Mt. Sterling and returned to the high school for a pep rally by a huge bonfire. The Homecoming Parade was Friday afternoon and floats were decorated to the theme of 100 Years and Then .. That night Brett Bemis made three touchdowns to give the Hornets a football victory to celebrate. With the theme Stairway to Heaven the couples danced to the music of Stone 'n Biscuit. At coronation LeAnn Perry and Gary Bowen became the 1977 Homecoming Queen and King.______________ On March 16, 1978, B.C.H.S. was honored to host Illinois governor, Jim Thompson. He arrived by helicopter with his wife, Representative Mary Lou Kent, and secret service agents to visit with students in the high school auditorium. A question and answer session followed his brief talk, and Governor Thompson received ovations as he discussed his objections to gun control and his favorable attitude toward farm legislation. The Marching Band and the Wrestling Squad donated their T-shirts to his collection and thus initiated him as an honorary member of both groups. The Air Force Band of the Mid-West performed for the student body April 25th. Their impressive show included hits such as Star Wars and Maynard Ferguson's version of the theme from Rocky . The Tenth Coin , a group consisting of people with hearing deficiencies and their instructors, presented a program consisting of skits and songs. Graduation ... Bars of the Commencement Suite Recessional drift through the air as you say goodbye ... to your friends, your locker, a classroom, your teachers, and the school. The four long years now seem like a few quick days filled with the excitement and activity that make memories. The halls are small and dark and the gym holds a quiet lonliness. Sure, your're making a new beginning and the whole universe is waiting for you, but right now it's kind of hard to leave the happy little world you all too quickly outgrew.
